Two retirees slump during pension arrears protest in Benue (photos)

Two pensioners of the Benue State Civil Service slumped on Wednesday during a protest staged by retirees under the umbrella of Concerned Benue Pensioners in Makurdi, the state capital.
The retirees staged the protest against the Benue State government over alleged unpaid entitlements and gratuity which spanned 11 months.

The protesting pensioners took to the streets of Makurdi carrying placards with various inscriptions demanding for the immediate payment of their pension arrears.
It was during the protest that two of them allegedly slumped and became unconscious. All efforts to revive the affected retirees proved unsuccessful. They were taken to an undisclosed hospital for medical attention.
Some of the inscriptions on the protesters’ placards read: ‘’Gov Ortom fulfill your campaign promises’’, ‘’Do not starve us to death,’’ ‘’Pay us our pension’’, ‘’We are more than 30,000 pensioners and we are dying like chickens everyday’’, “We are unable to buy our drugs’’, “Our children have stopped going to schools” and so on.
The protesters barricaded the popular CBN- Government House Roundabout causing gridlock for several hours while all efforts by security operatives to calm them down and allow free passage of vehicles failed until they finally decided to move themselves to the main Government House.
The protesters were received at the Government House by the Acting Secretary to the Benue State Government, Dr. Bem Meladu, commissioners of finance, education and the Head of Service.
Presenting their protest letter to the SSG for onward delivery to the governor who was said to be out of the state, the Chairman of the Concerned Benue Pensioners, Mr. Peter Ikyado, said the protest would not end if the state government failed to attend to their plight.
He added that his members were tired of “continued failed promises” by the state government on the payment of their pension arrears.
Ikyado said, “We had variously addressed letters on the issue of our unpaid benefits to President (Muhammadu) Buhari, Governor Samuel Ortom, the state Head of Service and other relevant stakeholders including the media. This is because we pensioners feel that we have suffered enough and have been short-changed. Irregular pension payments have become the order of the day. The payments do not even reflect what the pensioners should be earning due to lack of harmonisation of pension rate increases over the years.”
The chairman, who could not hold back his tears while delivering the speech, had to discontinue with it and directed his secretary to complete the message.
Meanwhile, the Acting SSG, Bem Meladu, appealed to the protesting pensioners to be patient with the state government as all measures were already in place to commence the payment of pensioners in the state.

Court dismisses Faleke's appeal against Kogi state gov, Yahaya Bello

An appeal filed by James Faleke, ex-running mate of former APC governorship candidate in Kogi state, Abubakar Audu, James Faleke, to nullify the installation of Yahaya Bello as the APC candidate in the state's governorship election has been dismissed by the Appeal court sitting in Abuja.

After the sudden demise of Audu on November 22nd last year, Yahaya was replaced as the APC candidate for the state governorship election.

Faleke had approached the court to argue that the votes polled by the party in the election were his, since he was the running mate of the deceased, Abubakar Audu. Ruling on his appeal today, Justice Jummai Sankey noted that according to Section 221 of the Nigerian constitution, only the party, not an individual, could canvass for votes. Justice Sankey in her ruling, stated that the Nigerian constitution does not recognise independent candidature and so Faleke cannot lay claim to the number of votes polled before the demise of Audu and after the election was concluded.

Justice Sankey added that Faleke was only paired with Audu after the primaries had been concluded but Bello participated in the primary election that produced Audu as the party's flagbearer.

Federal Govt. Resumes The Payment Of Amneesty Allowance To Ex- Millitants In Niger Delta

The Federal Government has resumed the payment of allowances to former Niger Delta militants under an amnesty scheme, a spokesman said Wednesday, after low global crude prices plunged the oil-rich country into a financial crisis, reports AFP.

“The payment of allowances is ongoing. Before now, there were some logistics issues, which we have addressed,” programme spokesman, Owei Lakemfa, told AFP.

“We had a funding gap — only N20 billion was approved this year as against N64 billion in 2015.

“But additional money has now been provided and the beneficiaries are getting their stipends through the central bank,” he said.

The amnesty scheme was introduced in 2009 after years of violence, including kidnappings and attacks on oil and gas installations, by militants demanding a fairer share of revenues for local people.

Despite the billions of dollars generated since the discovery of crude in Nigeria in the 1950s, most people live in dire poverty around the creeks and rivers of the oil-producing Niger Delta region.

But the scheme’s future had faced uncertainty since President Muhammadu Buhari took office in May 2015, with indications it would gradually be wound down.

Nigeria’s economy has been hit badly by the global fall in oil prices since mid-2014, which has reduced government revenues and forced up inflation to an 11-year high.

Under the scheme, a repentant militant receives N65,000 naira a month in exchange for renouncing violence.

About 30,000 ex-militants have joined the amnesty scheme, which the government initially planned to wind up by 2018, Lakemfa said.

“The decision to exit the scheme lies with the president,” he added.

Some people on the amnesty scheme, particularly those studying abroad on government scholarships, have complained about not receiving their monthly stipends.

But Lakemfa said that ex-militants studying abroad had also been catered for. “There is no problem at all with those on overseas training, as their tuition and allowances are being paid promptly,” he said.

Officials say between 15,000 and 20,000 former militants are this year expected to end amnesty-funded vocational skills and academic programmes designed to integrate them back into society.

Nigeria has seen a resurgence in oil unrest since the beginning of the year.

Since February, militant group, the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA), has carried out devastating attacks on the country’s key oil infrastructure, slashing output to around a third.

Pipelines operated by oil majors like Anglo-Dutch group Shell, US’ Chevron and Exxon and Italy’s Eni, as well as the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), have been targeted.

The NDA has spurned a government truce until its demands for a fairer share of the nation’s oil wealth for the Niger Delta residents, as well as self-determination and political autonomy, are realised.

Photos: 'Aunty Franca Asemota' who smuggled Nigerian girls into Europe extradited

A female people smuggler who forced dozens of teenage orphans into prostitution and slavery using the threat of witchcraft is facing jail.

Franca Asemota, known to her victims as 'Auntie Franca', used Heathrow as a hub to traffic at least 40 girls and young women into Europe from remote Nigerian villages.

The 38-year-old promised them jobs, education and a better life, then used 'witchcraft', threats and violence to force them in to the European sex trade.

Her gang even managed to snatch back two girls who had been rescued and put in in foster care in Worthing, West Sussex.

Today, Asemota, originally from Benin City, Nigeria, was found guilty of eight counts of conspiracy to traffic people into sexual exploitation by a jury at Isleworth Crown Court.

Asemota will be sentenced later this month.

The trafficking first came to light when Border Agency officials stopped two groups, in September and November 2011, travelling on false passports.

Although she was not arrested at the time, Asemota's ticket had been booked at the same time, at the same travel agent in Lagos, and she was sat next to the group on the plane.

Investigators then linked Asemota to at least six other 'successful trafficking trips' and the kidnapping of two girls who had been placed in foster care on the south coast.

Paul Cabin, prosecuting, previously told the court how three victims were first stopped at Heathrow in September, 2011, and a further two were also to give detailed accounts of the smuggling.

They all traveled on fake passports that claimed they were over the age of 18.

Mr Cabin said:
'They all came from remote Nigerian villages and had all been told that they were going to be educated, trained and employed in France.
'They all had difficult histories - for example, some were orphans. One was a runaway from an attempted forced marriage.
'They and their families and guardians are told that educational and work opportunities exist in Europe for them.
'Initially, therefore, the girls go with the gang voluntarily.
'Their compliance from that point on is secured by a mixture of threats, to themselves and their families back in their villages, the use of 'Ju-Ju' rituals and sexual violence, including in one case rape.'
He added:
'All but one reported at the time that they had been trafficked by a female who accompanied them on the aircraft from Lagos, known variously as Auntie Franca or Violet.'

"Once i saw the light, it was goodbye to my old life"-Lynxx on his encounter with God

Singer Lynxxx is sharing details about the very moment he decided to let go of his old habits and move closer to God. He made this known to dispel rumours that he became born again following a near death experience. The truth is much less dramatic...

He says he just heard a voice and saw the light.

His profound words:
I come across people every day that have some many questions, remarks and comments about my New Life and Journey of Purpose and i love to hear and see people’s reactions, opinions and the likes about making a change to live a better / more fulfilling life (in Christ)..

I can’t count how many people have said “u must have had a near death experience” lol errrr Nah! I was actually sitting on my couch perfectly fine when i had an encounter with God and he revealed what my TRUE purpose of existing is and i am sharing that with you all daily!

Light extinguishes darkness, so once i saw the light … It was a no brainer to say good bye to my old life and old ways…. How far does “being ur own lord and master get u?” I’ll let u tell it

There’s greatness in EVERYONE, u just have to sometimes dig into ur soul and the word of God to find yourself! He has the key to ur destiny in his palm and no matter how u “Search” here “in the world”, u wld NEVER find it unless u go to HIM! (It’s a decision ull never regret)

When you encounter God, u receive power , peace that no man can ever take from u but ultimately u come alive in truth and in spirit… No amount of success, money or fame could ever give me that. Get Plugged in and Come Alive

"Some people are destined to be big"-Eniola Badmus speaks on her weight

Yoruba Nollywood star actress Eniola Badmus is a plus sized chick, and using Lepacious Bose's weight loss story as a point of reference, fans have been on her neck to try to lose weight

However the big lady has attributed her physique to 'destiny'. Ms Badmus, speaking with Punch last week said;

We all can’t be slim. Some people are destined to be big while others are destined to be slim. I am not against people keeping fit because it is essential for one’s physical and mental wellbeing. Being fit keeps you moving and makes you function well.
A lot of people don’t know that I exercise frequently. I play lawn tennis, I jog and I like to take long walks at night.

Pandemonium as Irate Youth Storm Agip Oil Plant in Rivers to Shut it Down

The Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC) Ob-Ob Gas Plant located along Obrikom in Omoku, the headquarters of Ogba/ Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State have been shut down. The facility was shut down by angry youths in the area. The irate youths reportedly blocked the entrance to the facility at about 6:00am Wednesday, thereby crippling business activities at the Italian multinational oil outfit.
Vice President of the youth’s association, Emeka Agbaere, who confirmed the incident to newsmen, said the action became imperative following the insensitivity of the management to their memorandum of understanding (MoU). Agbaere said the group had written several letters and reminders to the management of the company without receiving any reply.
The youth leader recalled that after banning the association seven years ago by the administration of former governor Chibuike Amaechi, Governor Nyesom Wike lifted the ban in February 2016‎. He said the association had written the management of Agip informing them that they had been permitted to continue their activities in the area, but received no response from the company.
“We wrote several letters to Agip to recognise the group after the ban was lifted by the current administration. There was no reply to that effect, until we managed to shake them before the management listened to us on April 26 this year. Another meeting was scheduled for June 17. We met with the general manager, but nothing has come out of the agreement till date”, he said. Agbaere vowed that there would not be room for dialogue, until the company had commenced implementation of outstanding MoU.
