Teachers In Rivers Threaten To Shut Down Schools Over Unpaid Salaries

Teachers in Rivers State have threatened to shut down schools over their unpaid seven months salaries.

The Nigerian Union of Teachers, NUT, Rivers State Wing, disclosed this in a communiqué after its State Executive Council meeting, weekend.

In a statement, the state Chairman of NUT, Mr. Nkpogone Dumnataah and the Secretary, Dr. Okechukwu Nwachukwu, said the union resolved that it would call out its members from the classrooms if they were not paid 24 days after resumption.

The body urged its members to resume academic activities as the session begins on Wednesday, but vowed to lay down tools if the government fails to meet their demand for the payment of their salary arrears.

The statement said: “After due consideration, the trust the union has in the government of Rivers State and in the interest of our younger generations, the union, hereby, urges all teachers to resume school by September 14, 2016.

“The state government should, as much as possible, clear the backlog of salaries from February to August owed teachers of Rivers State. If the backlogs of salaries owed are not cleared between now and October 8, 2016, the union will have no option than to call out teachers from the classrooms to avoid imminent danger of a teacher slumping in the presence of his or her students or pupils.”

The teachers’ union also called on the state government to revisit the promotion of teachers in the state which, according to it, has been long overdue.

Arrested Suspect Speaks: "I Joined Armed Robbery To Raise Money For Burial"

A 46-year-old truck driver, Obi Ebong, who was arrested by the police in Ikotun area of Lagos, has claimed that he went into robbery to raise the money for his sister’s burial.

It was learnt that Ebong was arrested by the Zone 2 Police Command for armed robbery and murder, which he and seven others allegedly carried out in Ajao Estate area of Lagos on May 28.

Apart from Obong, other members of the gang are
Aniete Akonnah, Promise Friday, Happiness Promise, Silas Effiong, Monday Udoh, Ifedinachukwu Iwuola and Sumaila Umar.

On August 23, 2016, at about 1am, police received information that the robbery suspects broke into a warehouse in the Ikotun area of Lagos State.

It was gathered that the gang stole aluminum sheets, cartons of tomatoes and paper reams worth N22m from the warehouse.

They were reportedly arrested by the Zonal Anti-Kidnapping Unit while they were about escaping from the area.

The eight suspects thereafter confessed to robbing the warehouse on Ajao Estate, where they killed one of the security men, whose name had yet to be ascertained.

According to the police, tinned fish and cans of tomatoes, as well as motorcycle and bicycle spare parts were recovered from the suspects after their arrest.

Speaking with Punch, Ebong, who hails from Akwa Ibom State, said his role was to load goods into his truck, adding that he was not aware the gang members killed a security man during operation.

He said, “It was one Owen and Sam who invited me for the robbery operation. They have both been arrested and they are in the Kirikiri prison. I was inside the truck throughout the operation. My role was to load the goods inside the truck. I have yet to be given any money from the operation. I was promised N100,000 after the robbery.

“I was planning to use the money for my sister’s burial. My elder sister died around that time, and I was looking for money for the burial. That was why I decided to go with the gang.”

34yrs old Friday, also from Akwa Ibom, said he had participated in two operations with the gang.

He said, “It was Owen who led the gang. I worked as a bricklayer and I was invited by a friend to the robbery. I was asked to bring my truck.

“I have participated in only two operations. I did not know the security man was killed. I am married with two kids. I live in the Ikotun area of Lagos State. My wife did not know I went to rob.”

The Assistant Inspector-General of Police, AIG Abdulmajid Ali, said the suspected robbers would be charged to court at the end of investigations.

I An Blessed In Every Ramifications-Ifeanyi Ubah

The Chairman of Capital Oil and Gas, Mr. Ifeanyi Ubah, has said his desire to govern Anambra State is not to make money. He said he was richer by every standard than some state governors.

He said his ambition to govern his state was borne out of his conviction that he could better the lots of the people. His words:

"I am blessed in every ramification. If not for the love I have for Anambra, I should not have any reason to aspire to be governor, because there is nothing a governor enjoys that I do not enjoy.

“I had the best manifesto to change the fortunes of Anambra people when I aspired in 2013 to be a governor, but I had to let go because it must not be me.”

Ubah spoke with journalists in an interactive session to mark his 45th birthday at his Nnewi home.

He said, “So far, the governor is doing well, and I will support him, but we must think beyond our selfish interests. We must reject a situation where one man finishes his tenure and takes his stooge and puts him as governor.”

"Sallah Tragedy" 12 injured, 3 dead in multiple accidents in Lagos

No fewer than 3 persons were confirmed dead and 12 others injured in separate accidents yesterday in Lagos over the weekend. The accidents occurred on Ibeju-Lekki link bridge and Third Mainland bridge on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

It was learnt that a Nissan Primera saloon car with three occupants rammed into an oncoming truck on the Ibeju-Lekki Bridge.

The Nation reports that the driver, who was on a high speed, wanted to avoid a stationary truck before ramming into the oncoming vehicle.

The driver, identified simply as Biodun, was said to have died on the spot. Two others died in the hospital. The injured ones were rushed to Akodo General Hospital by officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).

The accident on Third Mainland Bridge occurred after a commercial bus fell on a BMW car.

Most of the injured, it was learnt were passengers aboard the bus. It took the intervention of motorists to rescue the two passengers aboard the car.

It was said that of the 15 occupants of the commercial bus, eight sustained severe injuries including the driver who was said to have hit his head on the ground.

The General Manager LASEMA, Michael Akindele, blamed the accidents on over speeding.

Street Urchin demolished Billionaire Jimoh Ibrahim’s campaign office

Some suspected political thugs attacked the campaign office of the factional governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State, Mr. Jimoh Ibrahim.

The office, which is located on Oyemekun Road, Akure, the state capital, had parts of the building housing it destroyed by the suspected political hoodlums.

It was gathered that the attack was not unconnected with the factional crisis within the party that had led to the emergence of two candidates for the PDP in forthcoming governorship election.

Eyitayo Jegede (SAN) is for Makarfi-led faction and Jimoh Ibrahim (SAN) for Sheriff faction.

The PDP flags representing the 18 local government areas of the state were pulled down while a big banner bearing the picture of Ibrahim as the PDP’s candidate was removed from the office.

In his reaction, the Director of Publicity of Jimoh Ibrahim Campaign Organisation, Mr Sola Akinuli, condemned the attack, describing it as unfortunate.

He said, “It was much unexpected from any quarter that such a barbaric act should rear its ugly head in 2016 when we thought all acts of hooliganism have been thrown into the dustbin of history.

“We are, therefore, calling on security agencies to take over the matter in order to forestall future occurrences. On peace we stand; and that we plead for, from all quarters.”

When Punch contacted the PRO of the Ondo State Police Command, Mr. Femi Joseph, said he was not aware of the incident.

Patience Jonathan's Dollars: Houseboy, Driver's names used to open bank accounts

When looting go on...stealing is not corruption! The EFCC has arrested domestic servants, including a driver and a houseboy, whose names were used to open bank accounts for Mrs Patience Jonathan, the wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Sources within the anti-corruption agency said that the companies’ accounts were
opened at one of the new generational banks. The companies are Pluto Property and Investment Company Limited, Seagate Property Development and Investment Company Limited, Trans Ocean Property and Investment Company Limited and Globus Integrated Service Limited.

The four companies’ accounts, which have since been frozen by the EFCC, have a balance of about $15m while another account, which bears Patience Jonathan’s name, has $5m.

Sammie Somiari, who deposed to an affidavit on behalf of the ex-President’s wife, said the former First Lady was the owner of the money in the accounts.

She had claimed that she gave millions of dollars to the then Special Adviser to the President on Domestic Affairs, Waripamowei Dudafa, to open accounts for her.

Somiari, however, claimed that Dudafa opened five accounts for Patience and that only one of the accounts was in her name, while the other four were opened in the names of companies belonging to Dudafa.

A detective at the EFCC, however, revealed that Dudafa used his domestic servants’ names to open the four other accounts and then deposited the money into the accounts.

The operative added, “We were investigating Dudafa when we stumbled on those four companies’ domiciliary accounts opened at Skye Bank with a balance of about $15m. On further investigation, we were able to identify the directors of the companies.

“When we detained the directors, we found out that they were Dudafa’s domestic servants. One of them was a houseboy while another one was a driver. Their photographs were used in opening the accounts and their signatures were forged.

“We found out that these domestic servants were completely innocent because they had no access to the accounts. We have since released them. The sole signatory to the accounts was Patience Jonathan and she was issued with a special card, which is accepted worldwide. She has a separate account, which was opened in her name and has a balance of $5m.”

The detective said a lawyer, Amajuoyi Briggs, who allegedly helped Dudafa to perpetrate the fraud, would also be arraigned.

Armed robbers trail female Malaysia returnee to Lagos hostel

There was chaos on Sunday on Moore Road, in Yaba area of Lagos, after suspected armed robbers attacked a student hostel, Dean’s Court, and carted away some property.

It was said that the three-man gang came in a red Toyota Sienna, with number plate, KJA 966 DY.

They had trailed a female student, identified as Cynthia, who had recently returned from Malaysia.

It was gathered that the robbers came to the area based on the information that Cynthia came back from Malaysia with foreign currency.

A source told Punch that after leaving Cynthia, the guys used the opportunity to rob other students in the hostel. They were about leaving the premises when a security guard at the gate challenged them.

He was said to have been stabbed in the chest and had been admitted at a hospital.

While two of the robbers escaped, the third suspect, identified as 36-year-old Olawale Adesola, was arrested by policemen from the Sabo Police Division.

A witness, John Aremu, said the incident happened around 6am, adding that a locally-made gun was recovered from the suspect.

He said, “They were three men and they came in a red Toyota Sienna. They attacked Dean’s Court, a hostel used by students of tertiary institutions in the neighbourhood. The robbers raided their rooms, stealing laptops, phones and money.

“They were leaving the place when the security man challenged them and there was a struggle. I think they didn’t want to create a scene, because they didn’t shoot.

“They stabbed him in the chest with a knife and the man raised the alarm. Two of the robbers fled, but the guard held the third suspect and ensured that he didn’t escape until a mob gathered and beat him up. The police patrol team also arrived on time and arrested the suspect.”

The resident said the suspect, in his confessional statement to the police, said the gang was on the trail of the student because she had recently returned from Malaysia.

“He said the girl’s name was Cynthia and she had just arrived from Malaysia after a successful deal. He claimed that the said Cynthia did not make the necessary settlements and that was why they were asked to rob her.

“He added that their operational vehicle belonged to his wife, who is a businesswoman. He said they all came from the Ota area of Ogun State,” Aremu added.

An ID card recovered from the suspect indicated that he was an executive member of the National Association of Commercial Tricycle and Motorcycle Owners in Lagos.

The Police PRO, SP Dolapo Badmos, confirmed the incident.

Medical Doctor Burns To Death At Home

Doctor Peter Odey, a famous medical practitioner in Ogoja, Cross River State, was, weekend, burnt to death in his sleep at his house located on Ibadan Street, Igoli-Ogoja.

According to a source in the area, the doctor and his assistant were in the house on Friday evening, when there was a disruption in public power supply and he instructed the boy to light a candle. The candle was placed in the parlour. Before the candle burnt out, it lit the table it was placed on and, from there, engulfed the whole house.

Jonah Ayikang, a cousin of the doctor, told Vanguard: “After the boy lit the candle, they retired to their different rooms and slept off without putting out the candle. It burnt out and eventually burnt the table it was placed on from where it spread and consumed the whole house.

“The Hausa boy, who served as his assistance, ran out of the house through the window, but doctor could not come out. By the time men of the fire service put out the fire, he had been burnt.”

Ayikang said the man, who is in his 80s, retired from active medical practice and was only carrying out consultancy services from his house, as many people still went to him for advice and other assistance.

He lived with the young Hausa boy, who ran errands for him. A source from Cross River Fire Station in Ogoja, confirmed the incident, adding that they arrived the scene when the havoc had been done. “We got there some minutes past 11p.m. and the house was almost razed. By the time we put out the fire, the damage had been done.”

We Support You, Just That Our Strategy Changed, APC Tells BBOG

The ruling All Progressives Congress has reacted to the apparent drift in the relationship between the Federal Government and the #BringBackOurGirls (BBOG) group.

Responding to a tweet by a leader of the BBOG, Oby Ezekwesili, suggesting a volte face by President Muhammadu Buhari on the issue, the APC said it remains committed to BBOG’s struggle but has only changed its strategy since it is now the party in power.

Before the May 2015 presidential election, the APC was a powerful voice behind the group’s campaign for the rescue of the over 200 Chibok school girls abducted by the extremist group, Boko Haram. The then opposition party made the missing Chibok girls a campaign issue against the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Now in power and the girls still not rescued, APC’s relationship with the campaigners has become frosty.

The BBOG members were on Tuesday prevented by the police from marching to the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Miffed by the development, Oby Ezekwesili, a former minister of Education, and a leader of the BBOG, took to Twitter on Friday to remind President Muhammadu Buhari that it was 879 days since the Chibok girls were abducted.

“No More excuses. Decide now. Act now,” Ms. Ezekwesili said to the president.

The APC, in its response to Ms. Ezekwesili, said it is committed to the BBOG’s struggle, but that its strategy has changed since it is now the party in power.

“As opposition then, #BringBackOurGirls was an open campaign, since that was the only way we could pressure government into action,” the APC tweeted.

“However, as leading party, our strategy changed. We’re most concerned with actual efforts to rescue the girls and our efforts are evident.”

The party said the BBOG leader would agree that Mr. Buhari’s administration is succeeding in its war against insurgency.

“Dear @obyezeks, we respect your resilience and commitment to the #BringBackOurGirls struggle and would do anything to encourage you, Ma.

“As a party, we’ll continue to work with government and security forces, as much as legally allowed, until they #BringBackOurGirls.”

Clinton Cancels West Coast Trip Due To Pneumonia After Collapsing At 9/11 Memorial

Hillary Clinton has called off plans to visit the West Coast on Monday and Tuesday following her 'medical episode' at the 9/11 memorial ceremony.

Her doctor revealed that the 68-year-old has pneumonia - hours after a video showed her collapsing into the arms of her Secret Service agents after being rushed from the memorial service at the World Trade Center.

Dr Lisa R Bardack said Sunday evening that Clinton had become overheated and dehydrated at the event in lower Manhattan. Bardack said Clinton is now 'recovering nicely' at her home in Chappaqua, New York.

The Democratic nominee was scheduled to attend fundraisers on Monday and Tuesday in California, and tape an episode of Ellen DeGeneres' talk show. Clinton is now holed up in her upstate New York home after a bystander recorded her losing her balance, slumping at the knees and being held up by her aides while waiting to get in a minivan.

Ogun Declares State Free Of Lassa Fever

Dr Babatunde Ipaye, the Commissioner for Health in Ogun State, has declared the state free of Lassa fever following a recent expression of fear at a patient showing signs of the fever. The commissioner made this known in a statement he issued in Abeokuta on yesterday.

He said that the government immediately swung into action to make sure that the patient, who complained of symptoms related to the fever was treated accordingly.

“Being a proactive government, we don’t want to take chances, so we monitored with series of test carried out on the victim. We have activated our disease surveillance and notification structures with a view to detecting any case on time as well as deploying appropriate measures to prevent and control the spread of the disease,” he said.

He, however, assured that the patient had been certified free according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines, hence the state was declared free of lassa fever.

OAP Freeze says many pastors are businessmen in Pentecostal suits

Controversial On Air Personality Ifedayo Olarinde, popularly known as Daddy Freeze on Sunday decried the flamboyant lifestyles lived by many pastors.

The OAP said most pastors are not Christ-like, in other words they do not serve God.
In an article on his blog entitled, “Pastors today are business men in Pentecostal suits, they are so unlike Christ and his disciples!”, Freeze said it was shameful that tithe paying members could not attend schools built by churches they worship at.
Freeze went ahead to give a brief description of how the disciples of Jesus lived in died, which according to him is in contrast to how many pastors live nowadays.
See full blog post below:
Most pastors today are not serving God, they are so unlike Christ, and many are just business men in Pentecostal suits! Imagine tithe paying members of a church cannot afford to send their children to schools that those churches built; it’s a shame! Jesus and his disciples did not have the flamboyant lifestyles our pastor today live.
Here’s a deep insight into how the disciples lived and died!
Jesus’ death on the cross, as described in the New Testament, has become one of the most famous events. But what happened to the 12 disciples who were his closest followers? Not as much information has survived about their fates, but here is what’s available from various sources, including the New Testament itself, apocryphal texts, early Christian historians, legends and lore.
• Simon, AKA Peter: Simon-Peter, who was appointed by Jesus the leader of the new sect, is viewed by Roman Catholics as the first pope, was eventually martyred in Rome during the reign of the emperor Nero. As the story goes, Peter asked to be crucified upside down, so that his death would not be the equal of Jesus and the Romans supposedly obliged.
• Andrew: According to 15th Century religious historian Dorman Newman, Andrew—the brother of Peter—went to Patras in western Greece in 69 AD, where the Roman proconsul Aegeates debated religion with him. Aegeates tried to convince Andrew to forsake Christianity, so that he would not have to torture and execute him. But when that didn’t work, apparently he decided to give Andrew the full treatment. Andrew was scourged, and then tied rather than nailed to a cross, so that he would suffer for a longer time before dying. Andrew lived for two days, during which he preached to passersby.

• James (son of Zebedee, AKA James the Greater): Acts 12:1-19 says that James was killed with a sword. The newly-appointed governor of Judea, Herod Agrippa, decided to ingratiate himself with the Romans by persecuting leaders of the new sect. After James was arrested and led to place of execution, his unnamed accuser was moved by his courage. He not only repented and converted on the spot, but asked to be executed alongside James. The Roman executioners obliged, and both men were beheaded simultaneously.
• John: John was the only one of the original disciples not to die a violent death. Instead, he passed away peacefully in Patmos in his old age, sometime around 100 AD.
• Philip: Philip, the first of Jesus’ disciples, became a missionary in Asia. Eventually, he traveled to the Egyptian city of Heliopolis, where he was scourged, thrown into prison, and crucified in 54 AD.
• Bartholomew: Bartholomew supposedly preached in several countries, including India, where he translated the Gospel of Matthew for believers. In one account, “impatient idolaters” beat Bartholomew and then crucified him, while in another, he was skinned alive and then beheaded.
• Thomas: Apparently Thomas preached the gospel in Greece and India, where he angered local religious authorities, who martyred him by running him through with a spear.
• Matthew: According to legend, the former tax collector turned missionary was martyred in Ethiopia, where he was supposedly stabbed in the back by an swordsman sent by King Hertacus, after he criticized the king’s morals.
• James (son of Alphaeus, AKA James the Less): According to Foxe, James, who was elected by his fellow believers to head the churches of Jerusalem, was one of the longest-lived apostles, perhaps exceeded only by John. At the age of 94, he was beaten and stoned by persecutors, and then killed him by hitting him in the head with a club.
• Thaddaeus, AKA Lebbaeus, Judas or Jude: According to several stories, he was crucified at Edessa (the name of cities in both Turkey and Greece) in 72 AD.
• Simon the Canaanite AKA the Zealot: Simon preached in Mauritania on the west coast of Africa, and then went to England, where he was crucified in 74 AD.
• Judas Iscariot: According to Matthew 27:3-6, the treacherous apostle quickly felt remorse over his betrayal of Jesus and went to the Temple to recant. When the high priests ignored his plea, he threw down the 30 pieces of silver that he had been paid, and went off and hanged himself. But Acts 1:15-20, gives a different and even grislier version of Judas’ demise. He says that Judas used the blood money to purchase a piece of land and then fell headlong from a high place there, so that “he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out.” Jerusalem residents subsequently named the place Aceldama, which means “the field of blood.”

Corps member jumps out of speeding bus

The passengers of a luxury bus en route to Jos in Plateau State from Aba, Abia State, were thrown into confusion on Saturday after a corps members who was one of the passengers jumped out of the speeding bus.

He was, however, lucky to have escaped with broken limbs.
The corps member, identified as Pam, was reportedly being escorted by another corps member from Aba to his home after he allegedy developed a strange illness in the village where he was currently undergoing the compulsory one year service in Ebonyi State.
Eyewitness said the corps member developed the illness and within in a week, it became worse, prompting the authorities to send him home to seek proper medical attention.
It was gathered that at a point after Fadan Karshi, along the Jos-Abuja Road, he suddenly overpowered his escort and jumped out through one of the windows in the bus.
The eyewitness, who identified himself simply as George, told our correspondent that the two corps members entered the bus at 9th Mile on the Markudi-Enugu Road on Friday.
He said, “At a point during the journey, Pam started disturbing everybody. He became loud, unruly and uncontrollable.
“As we approached the area after Fadan Karshi, Pam suddenly jumped out of the window. The driver stopped and we all rushed to see if he was alive. He was lucky to have sustained fractures on his legs and arms; but it was very serious.”
Pam was said to have been handed over to his wailing relatives on arrival in Jos.

Woman who kidnapped two siblings strips naked in prison

A female suspect in the custody of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba, Lagos State, has been taken by the police to the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Yaba, to determine her state of health.

The suspect, whose name had yet to be ascertained, was arrested after two missing siblings were found with her in Ojuwoye Market, Mushin.

The suspect has been said to be creating confusion at the SCIID.

She was said to have stripped naked on numerous occasions, including the times she was taken out of her cell to give her statement to the police.

It was gathered that she also attacked other suspects in her cell, which made the authorities at the SCIID to move her to a solitary cell.

A source at the SCIID told a Punch correspondents that at the solitary cell, the suspect continued to strip herself naked and was fond of dancing with vigour.

“Since the time they brought her, she had been misbehaving. We initially thought she was putting up a show, but we discovered it was not ordinary.

“She could dance from morning till night although nobody heard the music she was dancing to. She would suddenly remove her clothes, sometimes tearing the clothes off her body. We have tried to take her statement many times, but each time, she stripped herself naked. We usually had to force her to wear the clothes.

“We had to isolate her in a cell so that there would be peace.

“She eats like elephant and as soon as she wolfs down her food, she would start dancing. If you don’t give her food, it is another problem. If you ask for her name, she will give you more than three names in a second. She had claimed to be Ganiyat, Cynthia, Sola, among other names,” the source added.

It was gathered that the police at the SCIID decided to take the woman to the neuro-psychiatric hospital to determine whether she was acting or her ailment was real.

It was learnt that doctors at the hospital, after reportedly ascertaining that she was mentally unstable, told the police to bring her back on Thursday, September 15, for a proper test.

Another source told one of our correspondents that the policemen at the SCIID decided to look for her family, but their efforts had been abortive.

She said, “It was as if she dropped from heaven. Nobody has come to look for her. We went to where she was arrested, but nobody knew where she came from. The suspect has refused to supply any information. She has been busy dancing and making a nuisance of herself. If her relatives show up, we may release her to them for proper care. If not, she will be charged to court and the court can determine her fate.”

It was also gathered on Monday that the suspect was mobbed while allegedly attempting to flee with two siblings, identified as Hammed Rasheed (6), and Farida Raheed (2).

Their mother, Simbiat, was attending to a customer when the suspect took them away.

It was reported that the suspect, who is about 22-year-old, would have been lynched but for the timely response of policemen from the Olosan Police Division.

The case was subsequently transferred to the SCIID.
