There has been tension in Amaekpu Ohafia community in the Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State following a clash between youths of the community and policemen attached to the area over the killing of a 70-year-old hunter, Chief Kalu Okowu, aka Crossca.
It was gathered that some policemen had beaten the victim to death while trying to arrest him for allegedly injuring a fellow hunter during a hunting expedition.
A source described Okowu as a jovial, caring and peace-loving man, who was not known for trouble in the community.
He added that some months back, Crossca, who was the Chairman of Ohafia Hunters Association, a registered group with the Ohafia council, went on a hunting expedition with some of his colleagues when the incident occurred.
The source said, “Some pellets hit one of his colleagues, Agwu Oba, alias Aliko, in the leg. He was taken to Ebem Hospital, where he was treated and later discharged.”
Aliko was alleged to have reported the case to the police, which led to the arrest of the hunters who were with him when the shooting incident happened.
“They broke into Okowu’s house and allegedly hit him with guns. In the process, he collapsed. Efforts by doctors to revive him failed and he was taken to another hospital where he was confirmed dead on arrival by a medical team at the hospital.
“Okowu’s death angered some youths, who descended on policemen in the area. But some soldiers were alerted and they intervened,” the source explained.
The traditional ruler of Amaekpu Ohafia, Prof. Emea Arua, called for calm in the community, assuring that the perpetrators of the dastardly act would be prosecuted according to the law.
But the widow of the deceased, Kalu Nnoke, urged the government to ensure that justice was served on those found culpable as a way of assuaging the spirit of her late husband.

Senior Partner, First Law Associates, Timipa Okponipere Esq. in an open letter to EFCC chairman, Ibrahim Magu, urging the Commission to leave Mrs. Jonathan alone, warned that it refused to conform: “We shall file an action at the African Commission on Human Rights at the Gambia demanding N5 billion in exemplary and punitive damages.”
The solicitor observed: “There is no established legal or political precedent for what the EFCC is currently doing to our client. How many former First Ladies in Nigeria have received the Patience Goodluck Jonathan Treatment (PGJT) to have warranted the EFCC to engage in the effrontery to freeze our client’s accounts and subject her to public opprobrium, ridicule and disgrace? This nonsense must stop forthwith.”
He said: “Our client is a respected senior citizen of international repute, a retired Permanent Secretary and the immediate past First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Our Client is a law-abiding citizen who has never or at all been the subject of any criminal and/or financial investigation, whether at home or abroad. Accordingly, she has not been found guilty of any criminal conduct throughout a sparkling public service career spanning over 35 years.”
“During the 5 years our client served as First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria between May, 2010 and May, 2015; she was the Initiator/Founder of the A. ARUERA WOMEN FOUNDATION as well as the WOMEN FOR CHANGE INITIATIVE; both of which Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) substantially contributed to the 35 per cent affirmative action for women in the country.
Our Client is the recipient of numerous local and international awards in recognition of her untiring commitment towards uplifting the living standard of women, children and the aged in Nigeria. “Sir, it is against this sterling and meritorious background of our client that we most respectfully, write to draw your attention to the numerous breaches of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights (Ratification and Enforcement) Act 2004 committed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in cause of the Commission’s illegal and unlawful investigation of our client for alleged money laundering.
These investigations have reportedly led to the freeze of our client’s accounts and led to untold consequences to our client’s health and wellbeing,” the solicitor asserted. He added: “The EFCC must realize that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (Establishment) Act 2004 is inferior in content and quality to both the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (As amended) and the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights, 2004.”
Nuhu Ribadu, pioneer chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), says there is no way anybody can steal money recovered by the agency.
Speaking on Monday in Abuja during the annual conference of the Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM), the anti-graft czar expressed surprise that people were saying such money could be tampered with.
He said there was no recovery without a court, explaining that the loot were exhibits, and that they would be eventually sent to the account of government.
He cited the case where the court ordered that the money recovered from James Ibori, former Delta state governor, be sent to the federation account.
Ribadu said it is the statutory responsibility of a country’s president to fight corruption from all angles.
“Nobody else, it is not the duty of any governor or any chairman of a local government; it rests on the shoulder of the president, Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he said.
“If any one steals one naira in Uyo or Bayelsa State, it is the responsibility of the president to stop and bring him to justice.
“I think it is something the federation and the federal government should do a lot to ensure that they carry out constitutional duties and responsibilities.”
He called for the celebration of good people, adding: “Let there be acceptance that this is what we want and let there be disgrace for the opposite; it must be we who can do that.”
He also suggested a national conversation where the heads of the executives, legislature and the judiciary would sit together to accept that they would set an order to fight corruption.
Supreme Court will today deliver judgement on various appeals challenging the election of the Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello.
Two of the appeals were filed by Idris Wada, a former Governor of Kogi State and the former deputy governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, James Faleke.
The appeal of the candidate of the Labour Party in the election is also among those pending in the nation’s highest court.
Already, the police, apart from banning public processions and rallies in Kogi State, have deployed its officials to all parts of the state to prevent breakdown of law and order.
It will be recalled that the election was held in November 21, 2015 while the re-run was held on December 5, 2015.
The Borno Police Command said on Monday that it had placed the former spokesman for the Boko Haram sect, Ali Konduga, under psychiatric investigation.
This, the police said, followed Konduga’s display of abnormal behaviour since his arrest last week.
The News Agency of Nigeria reported that the spokesman for the command, Mr. Victor Isuku, said this in a statement he issued in Maiduguri.
Isuku said that Konduga was arrested after a complaint by one Muhammadu Kala. “On September 14, one Muhammadu Kala lodged a complaint at the GRA Police Station, Maiduguri, that Mallam Ali Konduga of Gwange ward had trespassed on the premises of the house of Senator Muhammed Ndume.
“The DPO led a team of policemen to arrest the trespasser where he had gone to receive treatment for injuries he sustained as a result of a mob action,” Isuku said.
The police spokesman said that investigation, however, revealed that the suspect was of unsound mind.
“On investigation, he was behaving abnormally and was not responding rationally to questions put to him, a situation that suggests that he is of unsound mind.
“Hence, he was taken to the Federal Neuro Psychiatric Centre, Maidguri, to ascertain his sanity.
“Meanwhile, the suspect is still under observation at the hospital,’’ he said.
Isuku, who said the suspect was sentenced to three years imprisonment for complicity in Boko Haram activities, added that the police had commenced investigations into his case and would take necessary action once he was discharged.
Residents of Salvation Avenue in the Ajegunle, Ikorodu area of Lagos State have found the corpse of a man by the riverside.
It was learnt that the deceased, Bolaji Waheed, was found around 1.30pm at the bank of the Itowolo River with a bottle containing a substance suspected to be poison.
A Punch correspondent gathered that 52-year-old Waheed had been declared missing on Saturday after his family members could not find him. It was learnt that Waheed’s dead body was found by the riverside on Monday, which caused confusion in the area.
A police source said Waheed was believed to have taken the poison and plunged into the river. The matter was said to have been reported at the Owode Police Division, which took the corpse to a morgue. A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told a Punch correspondent that a pastor in the area saw the corpse by the riverside and alerted others.
She said, “Pastor Ajiboye, who has a church in our area, was the one who reported the matter at the police station.
“The deceased had been missing for two days. He left home on Saturday and failed to return, which caused apprehension in his household. His family members searched the whole area to no avail.
“The man did not leave any note behind. So, the family members thought he was picked up by unknown persons and they reported to the police. But we were shocked that it turned out that the man committed suicide. He was found at the bank of the river on Monday. He was foaming in the mouth.”
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, confirmed the incident.
She said, “We are investigating a case of suicide. The man was found with a substance suspected to be poison Investigation is ongoing.”
Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Delta State, Mr. Kingsley Esiso, has said that Nigerians “are obviously” fed up with the economic policies of the All Progressives Congress, APC, insisting that the PDP was the only party that has the capacity to put the country back on track.
Speaking in Ozoro at an enlarged meeting of the PDP in Isoko North Local Government Area of the state, Esiso told aggrieved members of the PDP to stay put in the party, saying, “Even APC members are hungry and thinking of how to come to us.
“They came and preached the mantra of change to us. Nigerians bought it without asking the kind of change they are selling. Today, obviously, you can see that the change is very negative. We are proud to be in PDP and I am very confident that come 2019, PDP will bring a positive change in the country.”
Emphasizing the need for party faithful to respect constituted authorities, he added: “I am very sure that we have properly constituted executives in all the wards in Isoko North. I personally signed the names of every ward exco. Any other person or group of persons parading themselves as exco is not recognised.”
