University of Ibadan ranks among Top In The World

University of Ibadan has secured a spot in the ranking of top universities in the world. In the ranking released by Times Higher Education, Nigeria’s premier university was ranked 801 on the list.

UI is the only Nigerian university to make the list.

Earlier in 2016, the Academic Ranking of World Universities (AWRU) and the Center for World Universities Ranking (CWUR) released a list of the top 500 and 1000 world universities respectively and no Nigerian university was on the list.

CWUR said that Nigerian universities were not considered because of lack of quality research.

AWRU, who did not give a reason for Nigeria’s absence, made it clear that the criteria for ranking was the number of alumni and staff publishing journals in Nature and Science, number of alumni and staff winning Nobel prizes and Field medals.

South Africa and Egypt had the highest number of universities on the list from the black continent.

63 universities from the United states made it to the top 200 while 32 from the United Kingdom also made the cut.

"Forgive your partner if he cheats on you "- Hilda Dokubo

                       Image result for hilda dokubo

Nollywood actress, Hilda Dokubo, shared her thoughts about the rate at which many celebrities homes were breaking.

She pointed out that the mistake some of them make is their inability to apologize when they are wrong and they try to shy away from their mistakes.

She noted that the best way to make marriage work is by loving the home and most of all, the woman as a celebrity loving herself. She noted that the only time an actress can walk out of her marriage is when it turns abusive.

In her opinion on when an actress can leave her marriage, “When it becomes very abusive. Any man who is a real man will never abuse his wife.”

When asked about the actress catching the man when he cheats, Hilda noted that as a Christian, in such situation, the woman needs to forgive the man just the way God has been forgiving us of the daily sins committed.

“You know I’m a Christian, I’m born again, and I’m a minister so no ground is good enough. The Bible charges a man to love his wife as God loves the church. God has not abandoned us because of our sins, even when He caught us red-handed. He still loves us; He’s still giving us the best of help.
However, your inner strength should tell you that you have to be morally upright. If you are morally upright, you are not doing it for anyone but for yourself. So, do the best that you can be proud of,” she told TS Weekender.

I Won't Tolerate Torture of Nigerians – Police IG warns SARS

The Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has warned Special Anti-Robbery Squad operatives against torture and extra-judicial killings, saying no policeman in the world had the right or authority to kill crime suspects.

He admonished the SARS personnel to always respect the right of every Nigerian, noting that this was the way they could change the negative public perception about them.

Addressing SARS operatives and their commanders from various state at the Force Headquarters on Thursday in Abuja, the IG said:

“You should respect the constitutional right of every Nigerian; you don’t have authority to take lives, you don’t have authority to change a civil case to a criminal case, you don’t have the right to torture suspects."

He said policemen had a lot to do to correct the public perception that they do not follow due process in their operations.

He said the squad would undergo retraining and restructuring, adding that civil society organisations would be involved in the revamping process to contribute to the training

IGP Idris stated that the squad would have an intelligence arm to assist with intelligence gathering, stressing that the SARS’ operation would be intelligence-led, henceforth.

According to the IG, the operatives would be issued new badges and placed under Commissioners of Police, while those in Abuja and Lagos would be under the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of operations.

He warned against excessive force and reckless use of firearms, which could cause public panic.

He said, “You should conduct yourself to the admiration of the people. Don’t portray yourself as a demon. SARS is not devilish; you have to change the face of SARS by handling cases justly. Don’t turn the complainant into a criminal. You have to be sincere in dealing with the public.”

Senators calling for sale of Nigeria's Assets plan to buy them – Falana Warns

Respected human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has kicked against suggestions that Nigeria should sell off its national assets to raise funds for the country’s ailing economy.

Nigeria’s business mogul and Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, had suggested that the federal government should sell off some national assets like the multi-billion dollar NLNG, and use the proceeds to pull the country from the current economic recession.

Dangote’s suggestion, backed by notable figures like Senate President, Bukola Saraki, and Governor of Central Bank, Godwin Emefiele, has generated intense debates among Nigerians...

In his reaction, Falana (SAN) told PT that the suggestion was “in total conflict with section 16 of the (Nigerian) Constitution which has prohibited the concentration of the nation’s wealth in the hands of a few people or a group.

“Indeed, by virtue of section 44 of the Constitution, the nation’s natural resources shall be held in trust for the Nigerian people by the federal government.”

Falana said that senators would have been expected to kick against Dangote’s suggestion, since they had sworn to protect the constitution. “But for selfish considerations, a few legislators who may be queuing up to participate in the purchase of the nation’s assets are not prepared to defend the Constitution.

“If the senate is genuinely desirous to contribute meaningfully to the debate on the economy, it should, as a matter of urgency, propose a substantial reduction in the jumbo emoluments of federal legislators which are said to be the highest in the world.”

Falana said the country’s privatization programme in the past was discovered to be a rip off on the nation and the people, but that nothing was done about it, despite a senate resolution, under the leadership of David Mark, that the government should recover such assets.

“Many other properties of the federal government in Abuja, Lagos and other cities were under many public officers and their cronies. Apart from the recovery of the NET building in Lagos which was sold to the father of a legislator for N4billon instead of the market value of N75billion, the sale of the other 531 properties of Nitel and other agencies of the federal government located in the various parts of the country have not been accounted for.”

Help! My Husband wants me to abort 6-month pregnancy 40-yr-old woman begs divorce court

Image result for HOME ALONE EXPRESSION

A 40-year-old housewife, Amudalat Afolabi, has told an Ilorin Area Court, Kwara State, that her husband, Tajudeen, sent her packing because she refused to terminate a six-month-old pregnancy.
Amudalat made this known when she testified in a divorce petition filed against her husband in Ilorin, yesterday. “My husband sent me away from our matrimonial home because I refused to terminate the six months pregnancy am carrying,” she said.

Amadalat, 40, did not oppose the dissolution of the 20-year-old marriage, but described Tajudeen as “an irresponsible man.” She said she was tired of being enslaved by a “useless man.”

Tajudeen, 50, a residence of Edun Area, Ilorin, had prayed the court to dissolve the marriage alleging infidelity by his wife.

He said the marriage was contracted in 1996 and had produced five children: Monsurat,18; Ibrahim,16; Mohammed,12; Lateefat, 10; Fatimoh, eight, who are all living with him because their mother had abandoned their matrimonial home.

He said: “I am fed up with her waywardness. She is not stable and always frames excuses for her actions. “I pray the court to put an end to this union because my wife can kill me as she moves around town like dog.”

He, therefore, urged the court to dissolve the marriage and award him custody of the children.

The area court judge, Mr. AbdulQudri Ibrahim, dissolved the marriage between the two parties and issued the certificate of divorce to the complainant.

13 Witnesses Come Out To Testify Against Jonathan’s Wife

A Banker, the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and 11 others are to testify on how four slush accounts were opened for former First Lady Patience Jonathan.

Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has tightened security around the 13 witnesses ahead of the trial’s resumption on September 27.

Below are the full details...
The accounts were opened by the ex-First Lady’s aide on Domestic/Household and Social Events to the former President, Dr. Dudafa Waripamo-Owei Emmanuel.

Dudafa and six others were last Thursday arraigned before a Federal High Court in Lagos.

Others are a lawyer Amajuoyi Briggs, a banker, Adedamola Bolodeoku; Pluto Property and Invest. Company Ltd; Trans Ocean Property and Investment Company Ltd; Globus Integrated Service Ltd; and Seagate Property Development and Investment Ltd.

A document attached to the charge sheet indicates that 12 witnesses, including an account officer, will tell the court how the current and VISA Platinum Credit Card (USD) accounts were opened.

According to The Nation, the document lists the accounts in Skye Bank Plc as follows: 1771420773 and 2110002238 ( Pluto Property and Investment and Company Limited); 1771420797 and 2110002245(Trans Ocean Property and Investment and Company Limited); 1771421299 0and 2110002269 (Globus Integrated Services Limited) and 1771420780and 2110002207 (Seagate Property Development and Investment Limited).

The identities of the 13 witnesses are being shielded for security reasons.

It was learnt that some of them have been under pressure, especially the key Account Officer, in the past few days.

A source, who spoke in confidence, said: “We are set for the trial on how the slush accounts were opened for the former First Lady. We have filed a list of 13 witnesses along with our Proof of Evidence to show that we conducted due diligence.

“The Account Officer, who managed the slush funds, will tell the court the remittances into the accounts and how the ex-First Lady operated them. I think Nigerians have not heard the last on these slush accounts. This is not a case of witchhunt.

“We have also taken adequate measures to protect all the witnesses in order to enable them to testify against encumbrances. We know some of the witnesses have been under pressure but we will ensure their safety.

“It is imperative to protect these witnesses because we have availed the defence their names in line with the Administration of Criminal Justice Act. This may expose the witnesses to some risks which are being taking care of.”

The former First Lady had sued the EFCC, demanding that her accounts be defrozen.

But the EFCC said: “We are still investigating her and she cannot operate all these accounts until she is able to give the details of the sources of funds remitted into the accounts,” the source said, adding:

“Our findings showed that the remittances were products of gratification. It is left for her to prove otherwise.

“Already, the team which investigated the case has declared that she has a case to answer.”

The report of the investigative team said in part:
“Investigation so far carried out has revealed that the four VISA Platinum USD Card accounts used by Mrs. Patience Jonathan has a cumulative balance of $14,029.881.79 which has been swept Post No Debit Card category.

“Again, her personal account, different from the four VISA Platinum USD card accounts, bears the balance of $5,841,426.17.

“Considering the above stated findings, we can safely conclude that aprima facie case of conspiracy to retain proceeds of unlawful activities, retention of the proceeds of unlawful activities, money laundering, contrary to Section 15(3) and 18(a) of the Money Laundering ( Prohibition) (Amendment) Act, 2012 and forgery contrary to Section 1(2) (c) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act, Cap M17, Laws of the Federation, 2004 have been established against the aforementioned suspects
.”

EFCC claimed that all the funds traced to Mrs. Jonathan’s accounts were proceeds of gratification.

Two residents fought and stabbed each other to death in Lagos

Image result for NIGERIA FIGHTING EACH OTHER

A scuffle between two residents of AIT Road in the Alagbado area of Lagos State became a tragedy on Wednesday after they stabbed each other to death.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the two men – Owolabi Yusuf and the other, identified simply as Isiaka – had at about 7.30pm disagreed on a yet-to-be-ascertained issue and attacked each other with knives.

Our correspondent gathered that before they could be separated by other residents, they had stabbed each other with the knives.

PUNCH Metro was told that while the victims writhed in pain, some neighbours attempted to rush them to a hospital, but they were discouraged as the men had lost a lot of blood.

The matter was thereafter reported at the Agbado Police Division.

The policemen reportedly came some minutes later to remove the two corpses.

A police source said the two residents were believed to be cultists.

He said, “The two of them were both notorious in the area for cult fights. The two deceased were in different cults and met on Wednesday on the road when an argument ensued between them.

“Residents would have rushed them to a hospital, but their antecedent made the people reluctant.”

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, confirmed the incident.

She added that investigation was ongoing into the matter.

She said, “The two cult members engaged each other in a physical fight that led to their deaths. Policemen from the Alagbado division visited the scene and took photographs.

“The corpses are in a morgue where an autopsy would be conducted. Investigation is ongoing into the matter.”

Policemen kill undergraduate while chasing Internet fraudster (Photo)

Tragedy struck at the Ogoja Market, LASU-Igando Road, Lagos State, after operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad shot dead an undergraduate of a polytechnic in Edo State, Eldanojie Joseph. The 20-year-old business administration student was said to be on a visit to his cousin, Friday Ojah, who lived on Alape Street, Iba Ojo, when he was hit by a stray bullet.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the operatives were chasing a suspected Internet fraudster, identified as Badoo, who had parked his car and fled upon sighting the officers.

The operatives were said to have started shooting sporadically.

The Esan, Edo State indigene, who had reportedly gone out to buy a canned drink with his cousin, was hit by a stray bullet.

He was said to have died on the spot.
Our correspondent was told that the officers took Joseph’s corpse, dumped it in the boot of the suspected fraudster’s car and drove off.

The cousin, Ojah, told our correspondent on Thursday that the police, in order to cover up their misdeed, said Joseph was a cult member.

He explained that Joseph had only arrived in Lagos about three weeks ago.

He said, “We grew up and attended the same primary and secondary schools together. He gained admission into a polytechnic in Edo State, while I am still processing my admission into the same school.

“Around 9.30am on Monday, we strolled out to buy a can of soft drink. We were returning home when we learnt that some policemen were chasing somebody.

“We decided to go through the back of the market. As we turned back, my brother was hit by a bullet in the head and he fell down immediately.

“As I tried to call for help, I saw that the policeman that shot him had aimed his gun at me. I fled the place immediately.”

He said the officers put the corpse in the boot of the car left by the suspected fraudster and drove away.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the corpse was taken to the SARS headquarters in Ikeja, from where it was taken to a morgue.

Our correspondent was told that the SARS team that conducted the operation alleged that the victim was a cult member and he had attempted to shoot at them when they fired back.

“But it was all lies. He only had the canned drink we bought, a phone charger and a handset on him when the incident happened. The police lied to cover up their misdeed,” Ojah added.

The policemen on the team that killed the victim were identified as Lucky, Oganla.

A legal practitioner and family friend of the victim, Saheed Sanni, decried the killing, saying the policemen must be arrested and brought to book.

He said, “Cases like this, involving SARS officers, have become rampant in the state. They kill with impunity and believe they can always get away with it. Whereas Section 33 of the 1999 Constitution protects the sanctity of human lives and prescribes punishment for violation of that sanctity. You cannot just take anybody’s life without a court order or judgment. We are taking up the case and justice must be done.”

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, said she had yet to be briefed on the incident, adding that she would get back as soon as the Officer-in-Charge of SARS briefed her.

She said, “The OC SARS has yet to brief the command on that issue and he has been directed to do so. I will get back as soon as I have the facts of the case.”
