Pathetic story of Musa, the hungry, homeless Nigerian boy waiting to die (photos)

Under the Town Planning Bridge linking Ilupeju to Anthony Village, Lagos, a bag of bones held tautly together by a thin layer of diseased skin lies awaiting an inevitable death.

Our bag of bones is what remains of a man, nay, boy, who despite his visceral state is surprisingly lucid, and as “cheerful” as his unfortunate state should typically allow.

He is my newest friend, and his name is Musa.

I made his acquaintance on Thursday, when whilst driving to work I spotted the human heap tucked in an obscure spot under said bridge, sleeping.

Have you ever slept for 24-hours because you had no choice? 

Musa currently lives this reality – too weak to even beg.

On the day I made his acquaintance after buying him a hot meal, I was forced to return home because he desperately needed clothes. I brought back three shirts, two trousers, and a pair of shorts. I promised to try and get Lagos State Officials to come and rescue him. On Friday, passing my friend, he was wearing at least two sets of the three I had obliged him.

I was weak.

Na cold make man wear three cloth for inside sun!!!

How he even managed to put them on unassisted beats me; this bag of bones (Calling him a "bag of bones" is understating a physical condition akin to Kevin Carter's Pulitzer-winning depiction of victims in the 1993 Sudanese Crisis) needed me to pull him up to a sitting position when he wants to eat.

Can you imagine finding a lone bottle of water after a 10-day trek in Sahara Desert but not having the basic energy to unscrew the plastic cap, so you die of dehydration? Our man had almost lost his teeth trying to open the coca-cola I bought, when I returned and effortlessly turned the cap. Nwanne, to open coke easy until your body no strong.

Sorry for all the details, but a pathetic situation requires full disclosure!

This thing has me thinking. What is Religion? – Not fornicating? Not worshipping juju?? Fam, did Jesus die for you to attend church where you do nothing but beg him for more favors

No.

Now, let me narrate the concluding part of this story, and hopefully justify my reason for sharing with the world what I had planned would be one of many little secrets;

I felt guilty the entire weekend. Being in utter comfort on the Island, I continued to think about my new friend at the mercy of the elements. I half-hoped the State Government’s Social Welfare Taskforce would have picked him up for rehabilitation by Monday, but nope, Musa was still under the bridge, half-dead, but still lucid enough to remember me.

I gave him his food, and held a bitter-sweet conversation with the man who now wore what up till Thursday were my shirts. I asked his most pressing needs, at least until rescue came, and he was content with food, really. Ah! My warm room and duvet weren’t enough comfort during last night’s downpour, how much more, a sick man out in the open?! I promised him an old Quilt, but I’d bring it tomorrow on my way to work.

“Bring it today. PLEASE!!” He implored, eyes darting around desperately. “I beg. Today!!”, he repeated, eyes streaming, teeth gnashed in frantic hope.

It seemed mentioning the previously-unforeseen prospect of bodily warmth had galvanized awareness of his nightly suffering – and the reality of 24-hours being an eternity in such conditions!!

I was forced to immediately enlist my mother’s help in driving down to Town Planning with said Quilt, if only to quell his growing fear that I was leaving without redeeming my promise of same.

Instead of fruits, he requested milk, and as he drank, he asked for prayers. Ah! I couldn’t possibly open my sinner-mouth to invoke the Almighty, so I made a mental note to outsource that task to others more equipped.

Looking everywhere but at me, Musa continued emotionally;

“You don spend money plenty on-top my head, na God go bless you. If I die now, na God go reward you for wetin you do for me. I happy, God go bless you anywhere you go.”

Sigh.

A 20-year old; articulating his untimely death as though an old man at the twilight of a fulfilled existence… a child, blessing an “adult”, in Africa. Because of ordinary hunger??!!

An Ancestor once told me – Wearing Ralph Lauren is all well and good, but abeg, wear Ralph Lauren and feed a widow. Wear your Gucci head-to-toe, but nwanne, encourage an orphan. You are human to be human. The poor will ALWAYS be with us/you – so that there is always an opportunity to give, and do more than just exist. “The only thing you truly get to keep is what you give away.”

Musa remains in good spirits. Cannot decide what I prefer; his great dentition, his love for milk (and coke), or the equanimity with which he considers the possibility of death. He doesn't cower and beg for his life, but accepts every charity and challenge in good faith.

Here's hoping some highly placed person/group will take up this challenge to assist in keeping the Grim Reaper at bay in at least one life.

These women are traders at the foot of the bridge. The woman in brown was paid N1000 to supply Musa with fruits.

The writer, who is a friend of mine chooses to remain anonymous, but he added that money given to Musa is taken away from him at night by Area Boys. The clothes he bought for Musa, the money given to him by kind hearted individuals...everything, taken away by heartless ruffians. How can you see someone in this condition and still steal from him?

When i spoke to the writer, he was genuinely at loss at who to contact. I didn't tell him I will blog the story because all he is interested in is getting help for this poor boy. Lets hope the government intervenes quickly.

The police in Lagos State have arrested a man, identified only as Nathaniel, for allegedly drugging and raping his 14-year-old housemaid in the Ikotun area of the state.

Punch Metro learnt that Nathaniel, who stayed on Ajisegiri Street, in the Egbe area, was arrested by the Ikotun Police Division on Sunday.

It was gathered that the suspect allegedly lured his housemaid, Chinwe (pseudonym), with a cup of juice penultimate Monday, which contained a sedative.

The two persons were reportedly alone in the apartment on the day.

The victim, who is an orphan, was brought from a village in the south eastern part of Nigeria to work in Nathaniel’s house.

It was said that when she woke up, she found that she was naked.

She also reportedly found semen in her private parts.

Punch gathered that after the incident, Chinwe fled the house, dropping a letter for the suspect’s wife to intimate her on the sexual abuse she (Chinwe) had allegedly suffered.

It was learnt that the teenager also confided in a neighbour, who is a pastor in the area.

The pastor was said to have informed a child rights’ organisation, which in turn reported at a police station.

In the letter obtained by Punch Metro, Chinwe wrote that she did not want to return to the house as she was fed up with sexual abuses allegedly by Nathaniel.

She said, “Dear aunty, I want to go. I am suffering here. Look at what your husband has been doing to me. The last time that he did it, he gave me a drink and I did not know that he purposely gave me that drink so that I could fall asleep.

“It was when I woke up that I now found myself naked. I now saw white thing on my laps. This is what he was doing to me the other time that I told you that I wanted to go. I do not want to cause trouble for you. Please, call my brother to come and take me away. I want to go and I do not want to stay here again.”

A source with the Child Protection Network, where the pastor reported the case, said, “The man is over 40 years old. He employed the victim as a domestic help.

“He had been sexually abusing the 14-year-old victim. On that Monday, he drugged her juice. That day was a public holiday. When she slept off, he raped her.

“She ran away from the house, because she did not want trouble for the man’s wife. Nathaniel has been arrested by the police. The Family Support Unit of the police is handling the matter.”

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, confirmed Nathaniel’s arrest.

She said, “The state Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, has directed that the case be charged to court.

A 41-year-old woman, who was arrested by policemen attached to Area ‘J’ Command, Ajah, Lagos State, for allegedly hiring assassins to kill her husband of 14 years over a disagreement which led to their separation, has said she was a frustrated housewife but that she only sent the thugs to beat him.

The suspect, Mrs. Chika Orji, was arrested following a confessional statement by one of the suspected assassins, Bright Ikechukwu, who was arrested while attempting to break into Mr. Orji’s apartment at Jakande Estate, Ajah.

 During preliminary investigation, it was discovered that one of those hired for the botched assassination was a carpenter, identified as Ekene, who usually worked for Mr. Orji. During interrogation, Mrs Orji, a mother of four, denied sending thugs to kill her husband. Rather, she stated that she only told them to beat him, to teach him a lesson for always beating her. 

According to her,

 “we got married 14 years ago and are blessed with three daughters and a son. All of a sudden, my husband became a wife beater. He would beat me, leaving me with swollen face and would also threaten to kill me. “He chased me out of the house three years ago. I made several efforts to get my children back, part of which was to report him to human rights offices for settlement. But he did not honour any of the invitations. Both families have made attempts to settle us, but he would not listen. “He was served with a court warrant over the issue, but he also refused to show up. Along the line, he sold the house we both built for N85 million, but never gave me any dime. 

“He also stopped our children from visiting me and any attempt to see them always resulted in beating. Out of frustration, I told Ekene, our carpenter, to beat him up. I did not pay him or hire anyone to kill him. I am a frustrated woman and I am sorry for everything.” 

 ‘She paid us to kill him’

However, the arrested suspect, Bright Ikechukwu, insisted that he was contracted by Ekene to kill Mr. Orji, on the instructions of his estranged wife. Ikechukwu, a plumber, disclosed that he travelled all the way from Delta State to carry out the operation, with another thug whose name he gave simply as Samuel. According to him,

“I live in Ogwuashi-Ukwu, Delta State. My friend, Ekene, said he had a job for me. This was three weeks ago. I hurriedly came to Lagos and stayed with him in Ajah, where I met another of his friend, Samuel. “He told us that Madam Chika promised him N500,000 to kill her husband. Thereafter, he told Samuel to take me to Mr. Orji’s house, to identify the target. We went there and hid inside a tricycle, waiting for Mr. Orji, who we were told always came to open the gate himself whenever he was returning home. “

But on that day, it was his daughter that opened the gate. We went back the next day, yet it was his daughter that opened the gate again. “By the time we went the third day, it was Mr Orji that opened the gate himself. The plan was to rush to him and stab him eight times in the chest, rib and neck. But Samuel, who was supposed to stab him, went to buy cigarette and by the time he came back, our target had gone inside and shut the gate. 

“Out of frustration, I went back home and told Ekene to give me my own share of the money that I was going home.

 But he stated that Madam Chika would only pay after the job was done. I decided to go to Mr. Orji’s apartment to steal instead, to get some money to go back to Delta State. “But as I was trying to jump through the fence, somebody raised alarm which attracted members of a vigilante in the area, who apprehended me. I had to open up when they almost killed me."

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a 37-year-old man, Rasak Adekoya, for allegedly beating his 10-year-old son to death in the Ago Iwoye area of the state.

It was gathered that Adekoya was arrested on Tuesday by the Ago Iwoye Police Division. A source said that the deceased, Waris, had been allegedly tortured by his father on several occasions.

He said some community leaders had warned him against the act, adding that the torture allegedly did not abate.


The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the state Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, had ordered that the suspect be charged to court.

He said, “Members of the community, where the suspect lived, gave the police a tip-off. The community accused the man of subjecting the boy to excessive beating.

“Preliminary investigation revealed several marks on the body of the deceased boy as a result of series of torture from the suspect. The corpse has been deposited at St. Joseph Catholic Hospital Mortuary, Oke-Agbo, Ijebu Igbo.

“CP Iliyasu has ordered that the suspect be transferred to the Homicide Section of the Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Abeokuta, for further investigation.”

NSCDC Arrests Tanker Driver For Adulterating Fuel

The Lagos State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has arrested a driver, Adebiyi Yusuf, for allegedly engaging in illegal oil bunkering and adulteration of diesel.

Thirty-two-year old Yusuf was apprehended along with one Paul Ifeakandu on Saturday on the premises of a complex on Jimoh Odutola Street, Surulere, Lagos, where they were reportedly selling the product.

 It was gathered that eight drums and 14 jerrycans of adulterated diesel; six drums of chemicals; six pumping machines and two number plates, among other items, were recovered from the premises.

Tanks said to be 11,000 litres each were also reportedly mounted on the premises.

A Punch correspondent learnt that the anti-vandal team of the corps, acting on a tip-off, swooped on the suspects around 4pm on Satuday. They were paraded on Tuesday at the NSCDC state command’s headquarters in Ikeja.

Forty-five-year-old Ifeakandu, who hails from Anambra State, said he only assisted the owner of the factory, identified as Okechukwu, to offload the product from tankers.

He said, “The product belongs to Mr. Okechukwu. He is also from Anambra State. I help him to offload the diesel. According to him, he buys the product from a depot in Apapa. I have been working with Mr. Okechukwu for two years now. He gives me N3,000 for every offloading I do.”

However, Yusuf, who claimed to be a Forte Oil tanker driver, denied his involvement in the act, saying he was ill and decided to sleep inside a vehicle parked on the premises when the operatives nabbed him.

Yususf, who also claimed to be a Lagos State indigene, said in Yoruba that he started working for the oil company in January, 2015.

He said, “I was arrested while sleeping in a vehicle on the premises. I told the officers that I am an assistant driver with Forte Oil and not an oil thief, but they ignored my explanation.

“There are mechanics and some people selling gas on the premises. I don’t know why they spared them and arrested me. I don’t know anything about the seized product.”

The Lagos State Commandant of the NSCDC, Tajudeen Balogun, however, said the suspects were culpable of dealing in adulterated and illegal oil bunkering.

He said, “They (the suspects) don’t have licence from the appropriate agency. It looks like they are working for somebody.”

The commandant added that the suspects would be charged to court soon.

Forte Oil Plc, however, denied that Yusuf was its worker.

An official of the firm, who did not want his name in print,  said, “We don’t have tanker drivers. He may be working for a transporter. Transporters are independent of our company. We have  checked his name in our database; the suspect is not known to us. The company is not affiliated to this case.”

Magu Wants Laws Reviewed For EFCC To Keep Percentage Of Recovered Loot

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has urged a review of Nigerian laws to enable anti-graft agencies in the country retain a percentage of the loot recovered to fund their operations.

The Acting Chairman of the commission, Mr Ibrahim Magu, made the request at the national anti-corruption conference organised by the Presidential Advisory Committee against Corruption (PACAC) and the National Assembly in Abuja.

The conference which began Tuesday will end Wednesday. Ibrahim Magu Magu said the review will be in line with international best practices.


“In some jurisdictions like the UK, proceeds of crime are further used to strengthen the agency,” he said.

“In EFCC, we have been struggling for years to build our headquarters and when I think of the billions of naira we recover, I can see what would have happened if we are allowed to apply a percentage of this recovery into our operations.”

The EFCC boss also advocated the amendment of the country’s anti-graft laws to place the burden of proof on the accused in corruption cases.

“One the issues that concerns us in the EFCC is that of non-conviction based recovery.

“It is of great concern to us that the burden is on us to prove in court that this is a proceed of crime.

“But in other climes the accused has to prove that the property he has, actually represents the fruit of his labour.

“There is the need for the Act to make a provision for an application of the proceeds of crime into recapitalising the anti graft agencies.” Magu was represented at the event by Mr David Tukura, the Deputy Director of Planning, Policy and Statistics of the commission

Detained former Minister of State (Defence) Musiliu Obanikoro has implicated Governor Ayodele Fayose in the probe of the N4.745billion wired to a company by the Office of the National Security Adviser(ONSA).

The cash was wired to Sylva Mcnamara, which has been linked to Obanikoro within seven months in 2014.

Sen. Obanikoro said of the cash, N2.23billion was transferred to Fayose.

He handed Fayose $5,377,000 in cash and N1.3billion was received by the governor’s associate, Mr. Abiodun Agbele.

According to the Nation, Obanikoro admitted that the N1.3billion was flown to Akure airport in two chartered flights for delivery to Agbele.

The money was sourced from the $2.1billion meant for arms purchase at the ONSA.

Obanikoro told Economic and Financial Crimes (EFCC) detectives that he is not the owner of Sylva Mcnamara that was used to transfer the funds to Fayose.

But he defended why the money was remitted to Mcnamara. Part of the reason is the warding off of a plot by Boko Haram to attack Lagos, he claimed.

Accompanied by his lawyer, Mr. James Onoja(SAN), the ex-minister was confronted with a petition from ONSA which was dated November 28, 2015.

The petition is titled “Payment to companies with no contract awards or approval”.

He said having gone through the petition, he discovered that Sylva Mcnamara was No. 78 on the list of firms being investigated, having “collected the aggregate sum of N4,685,000,000 between April 4, 2014 and November 13, 2014.

A source quoted Obanikoro as saying that 

“N2.2billion was transferred to Sylva Mcnamara for onward transfer to Mr. Ayodele Fayose on the instruction of the National Security Adviser (NSA).
“The sum of N1.3billion cash was brought in a bullion van by Diamond Bank on the instruction of the NSA.
“In addition, the sum of N60million was converted to dollars at the rate of N168 per dollar and altogether the sum of $5,377,000 was handed over in cash by me to Mr. Fayose while the N1.3billion was received by Mr. Fayose’s associate, Mr. Abiodun Agbele, in the presence of my Aide-de-Camp (ADC), Lt. Adewale, who also accompanied them to the bank along with the bank officials.
“I didn’t interact with the bank officials. I called Fayose before the funds were handed over to Mr. Abiodun Agbele. I spoke to Fayose with my phone at Akure airport.”

On how the cash was transferred to Fayose, the source said Obanikoro told investigators that “two flights were used to convey the money from Lagos”.

The ex-minister said he “took off with the first flight with part of the money. The second flight brought the remaining funds to Akure airport and I directed that it should be handed over to the same person,” he was quoted as saying.

The source said Obanikoro however maintained that part of the cash was used to ward off Boko Haram aggression in Lagos and in the Southwest.

The source added:

 “He told us that he is not the owner of the company in question but introduced the owner, Mr. Kareem Taiwo, to the NSA, Mr. Sambo Dasuki, when the threat of Boko Haram became more visible in Lagos.

He said the government wanted to “incorporate local  input into the intelligence gathering and prevention of terrorist attack on Lagos and the Southwest”.

The EFCC had discovered that Sylvan Mcnamara Limited, allegedly owned by Obanikoro and his sons,   was used to launder the N4.745billion.

The company, which was incorporated in November 2011, has the following as its directors: the ex-Minister’s aide, Ikenna Ezekwe(700,000 shares) of 51 Simpson Street, Ebute-Metta; Idowu Oshodi(299,000 shares) of 8, Prince Tayo Adesanya Street, Park View Estate, Ikoyi; and Elizabeth Adebiyi(1,000 shares) of 3, Adedoyin Street, Ijeshatedo, Surulere.

Ezekwe has had his accounts defrozen by the EFCC since the slush funds were not traced to him.

The Nation stumbled on a document on the investigation. t states: “To set the stage for the use of the company for money laundering, the board of directors on May 7, 2012  passed a resolution that the company should open an account and appointed Mr. Gbolahan Obanikoro, Ikenna Ezekwe, Ms. Theresa Matuluko (Secretary) and Mr. Babajide Obanikoro as the signatories to the account.

“The board added that the signing combination be that any of the signatories can sign alone.”

According to EFCC, when it was time to draw the N4.745billion from ONSA as a war chest for the Ekiti governorship poll, ex-Minister Obanikoro made the account of Sylvan Mcnamara Limited available and coordinated the disbursement.

The breakdown of the disbursement is as follows:

N N759, 384, 300 changed into dollars through Bureau de change;

N160million used to purchase cars through Balmoral International Limited;

N1, 219, 490,000 ferried by Obanikoro in two flights to Akure and received by Fayose’s associate, Abiodun; and

balance of about N2billion withdrawn by Obanikoro and his two children in cash.
