Libya passenger jet hijacked with 118 onboard, diverted to Malta

A Libyan aircraft with 118 people on board has been hijacked and diverted to Malta by two men claiming to have hand grenades.

One of the hijackers told the flight crew he was "pro-Gaddafi" and he was willing to let all 111 passengers leave the Airbus A320, but not its seven crew, if his demands were met, the Times of Malta reported.

It was unclear what the demands were.

At about 1300GMT, women could be seen disembarking from the aircraft. Maltese Prime Minister Joseph Muscat tweeted the 25 people released were the first group of hostages freed.

About a half an hour later Muscat announced that 65 passengers had been let go.

Tim Diacono, a journalist from Malta Today, told Al Jazeera the hijackers had grenades and "threatened to blow the plane up".

"We don't know what the demands are, but the negotiations are under way," Diacono said. "There are people leaving the airplane as we speak, so it looks like it is being resolved peacefully, but it's still too early to tell."

He said it was the first hijacking situation in Malta since the mid-1980s.

All passengers aboard the plane were in good health, an unnamed official at the Libyan foreign ministry told the state news agency LANA.

The prime minister's office confirmed a negotiating team was at Malta International Airport.

Brad Pitt slams Angelina Jolie in latest divorce court filing as he prepares to spend Christmas alone

Brad Pitt has slammed Angelina Jolie in his latest court filing in the estranged couple's increasingly bitter divorce case.

Pitt's lawyers have stated that Jolie "has no self-regulating mechanism" to prevent sensitive information about their children and divorce becoming public through the media.

According to the UK Mirror, the actor's legal team filed a memorandum in a Los Angeles court on December 21 explaining to a judge why he wants information about the divorce and the custody of their six children sealed from the public.

In the paperwork Pitt, 53, accuses Jolie, 41, of compromising their children's privacy and not acting in their "best interest".

Earlier this week Brad's demands to see more of his children were rejected by his ex-wife as their divorce battle became increasingly bitter, and the star was said to be facing a Christmas alone.

The actor’s attorney Lance Spiegel claimed in one that while his client has complied with the child therapy process, 'the therapy team has ignored or disregarded issues that [Brad] has raised.'

At the end of November Pitt’s lawyers had asked Jolie’s legal team if the actress would agree to greater visitation during December between him and the children, in a number of 30 to 60 minute monitored sessions.

“It was not clear who those subjects are but the traditional ruler drank what was considered to be a poisonous chemical, whose container was found near his lifeless body. There is apprehension in Umuachi-Ogo since yesterday (Wednesday).”

Another source added that he had been buried in front of the palace in line with law and customs.
