At least 10 people have been killed in the latest clashes in drought-hit
Kenya between rural communities fighting over pasture to graze their
animals, police said today.
Herders from the Borana and Samburu communities fought a gun battle on
Sunday in an area in the centre of the country called Kom, where both
groups had taken their livestock to graze, said Charles Ontita, police
chief of the town of Isiolo.
He said 10 people were killed in the confrontation and two wounded, "but we have deployed more officers there".
The deaths come a week after 13 people were killed in the western
Baringo region when Ilchamus and Pokot herdsmen clashed over grazing at
an area called Mukutani.
On Sunday in Mukutani, four police officers were wounded when suspected
Pokot herdsmen fired on their vehicle as they escorted members of the
Ilchamus community to safety, according to Baringo police.
In response to the spreading violence in both parts of the country
President Uhuru Kenyatta on Friday announced the deployment of troops to
Baringo and Laikipia regions.
Kenya, like elsewhere in the Horn of Africa, is suffering from drought,
but with national elections due in August many suspect that politics is
also at play in the recent violent confrontations.

Update on Doctor Who Jump Into Lagoon on Third Mainland
Lagos Emergency Management Agency officials on Sunday searched for the
medical doctor, who jumped into a lagoon on the Third Mainland Bridge,
in the Adekunle area of Lagos.
It was learnt that the man, identified as Dr Allwell Orji, was in a Sport Utility Vehicle en route to Lagos Island at about 4pm when he asked his driver to stop after he "received" a call.
He was said to have walked to the railings on the bridge and jumped into the lagoon.
The vehicle and the deceased’s driver were taken to the Adeniji Adele Police Division, while efforts were ongoing to find the doctor “dead or alive” as of 8pm on Sunday.
An Instagram user, who claimed to have witnessed the moment Dr. Orji jumped into the lagoon expressed shock over the incident.
“I witnessed the worst thing ever today! The owner of this particular vehicle jumped into the lagoon right in front of me! I saw him get out of his car; then jumped. I was directly behind him. I parked and ran as fast as my legs could carry me, but it was too late. I wish he had waited a little longer, I wish I was able to stop him, I wish I was about to hold his hands, I wish he could tell me what the problem was!
“I’m still in shock, I couldn’t control my tears. I ran after him, I tried to save him, I called for help….Loads of people stopped because they saw me acting like a crazy woman, the ambulance was present, the fishermen were trying to help, but it was too late! He left a note on his personalised doctor’s notepad with his house address,” he wrote.
The LASEMA General Manager, Mr. Adesina Tiamiyu, who confirmed the
incident, said some local divers and men of the agency were still
searching for the victim in the lagoon.
He said, “The man parked his grey coloured Nissan SUV with number plate, LND 476 EE, at about 4.50pm on the Third Mainland Bridge, and jumped into the Lagos Lagoon.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the man, Orji, who was being driven by his driver, suddenly ordered the driver to pull over.
“He alighted from the SUV and jumped into the lagoon from the bridge. The vehicle and the driver have been taken to the Adeniji Adele Police Station.
“Effort is ongoing to find him or recover his body from the lagoon.”
The Zone 2 spokesperson, SP Dolapo Badmos, said the marine police joined the Lagos command to search for the victim.
“The mother and a pastor have come to identify him.”

EFCC hands over Amosu’s $2.15m hospital to Air Force
The hospital, St. Solomon Hospital, which is located on Adeniyi Jones Avenue, Ikeja, Lagos, is said to have state-of-the-art equipment including a Magnetic Resonance Imaging machine which costs well over $1m.
A reliable source at EFCC told Punch that the EFCC could not manage the property and therefore decided to hand it over to the Nigerian Air Force medical unit.
He said, “The hospital has very expensive equipment including an MRI machine which is very rare. However, we could not manage the hospital so we handed it over to the air force pending the outcome of Amosu’s trial. It is assumed that the money used in buying the hospital was stolen from the air force.”
Other properties seized from Amosu included a house on Adeyemo Alakija Street, GRA Ikeja worth N250m; a duplex at House 11, Peace Court Estate, GRA Ikeja worth N110m; a N40m property located at NAF Harmony Estate, Asokoro base; a five-bedroomed house at Valley NAF Estate, Port Harcourt, worth N33m and a N95m house on Umaru Dikko Street, Jabi.
The Federal Government has also commenced moves to seize Amosu’s house at 50 Tenterden Grove, NW41TH, London worth about £2m.
Amosu as well as a former Chief of Accounts and Budgeting in NAF, Air Vice Marshal Jacob Adigun (retd.); and a former Director of Finance and Budget, Air Commodore Olugbenga Gbadebo (retd.), are currently standing trial before a Federal High Court for allegedly stealing N22.8bn from the coffers of the Nigerian Air Force between 2014 and 2015.
The commission has seized 33 properties they allegedly bought with stolen funds.
Besides the hospital, the EFCC had seized plazas, schools, mansions, farms and a quarry from Amosun, Adigun and Gbadebo.
While almost N2.835bn cash has been recovered from Amosu alone, Gbadebo has returned N190m. Adigun’s wife, returned some money as well.
The document further stated that properties recovered from Adigun were worth N9.6bn.
The cash and assets which the air force men might forfeit permanently, add up to about N15bn.

Whistleblowers to earn N210m on every N5bn – FG
Making the clarification in a statement yesterday, minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed said any amount over N5billion will attract 2.5% reward.
By implication a whistleblower on N5bn recovery will make N50million from the first N1bn and N160million from the remaining N4 billion making a total of N210million.
The minister said government will protect the identity of all whistleblowers, whether in the public or the private sector by keeping information they provide secret.
He said the assurance followed the presentations made to the Presidential Assets Recovery Committee by concerned citizens and groups about the safety of whistleblowers.
The minister also said cases of those who may have suffered backlash as a result of the information they provide will be reviewed and appropriate mitigating actions taken.
‘‘Whistleblowers have nothing to fear, because the committee has put in place the necessary measures to safeguard those who give useful information. As a matter of fact, whistle-blowers have everything to gain and nothing to lose,’’ he said.
‘‘What we have done by making this information public is to reassure potential whistleblowers that the plan to reward is real. We are not just saying we will pay all whistleblowers, but we are letting them know in advance what they are entitled to, once the information they provide leads to the recovery of looted funds,’’ he added.

23-year-old man sentenced to death by hanging for stealing phone
A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has sentenced a 23 years old Tope Abiodun, to death by hanging for stealing an android LG phone valued at N87, 000.
The court also sentenced a teenager, Godfrey Emmanuel, to 14 years imprisonment for the same offence.
Another suspect, Samuel Egbe 24-year-old trader at Wuse Market, Abuja, who was charged with dishonestly receiving the LG phone from the 2nd accused (Tope Abiodun), with knowledge that they were stolen, was, however, lucky, as he was discharged and acquitted by the court.
The court was amazed by the ingenuity deployed by the convicts in carrying out the robbery attack on the owner of the LG phone, Jacob Habila, who they attacked with a knife before disposing him of his handset.
According to the prosecution counsel, Assistant Commissioner of Police Simon Lough, the convicts had, on October 3, 2013, at about 9:21pm, positioned themselves half naked, at Impresist junction, Karmo, Abuja, and upon sighting the victim with his LG android phone, approached him to allow them make a distress call to their brother.
They told him they were victims of a robbery attack and would need his assistance to call their brother to bring some clothes for them to put on.
The unsuspecting Habila was touched by their story and in the process of dialling a number that was given to him, the 2nd convict (Godfrey Emmanuel), brought out a knife and stabbed him on the head, while Tope Abiodun escaped with the phone.
With blood dripping from his face, the victim raised the alarm, shouting “thief, thief” which led to the arrest of Emmanuel.
The matter was swiftly reported at the police and Abiodun was arrested a few days later.
The convicts were slammed with a three-count charge by the Commissioner of Police, for armed robbery, contrary to section 6(b) of the Robbery and Firearms Special Provisions Act, Cap R11 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
The convicts were represented by Nnamdi Nwiwu, who made frantic but failed legal efforts to get them off the hook.
The lawyer, however, succeeded in saving the teenage robber (Godfrey Emmanuel) from the hangman’s noose by pleading with the court, after he was found guilty of the offences, to consider the provisions of the Child Rights Act, particularly section 221 and section 405 of the Administrative of Criminal Justice Act and reduce his sentence to 14 years.
After evaluating the submissions of counsel, including exhibits and documentary evidence before her, Justice Chizoba Orji found the 1st and 2nd accused persons guilty as charged.
She held that from the totality of evidence before her, the prosecution had successfully established the case of armed robbery
