Ugandan Man fakes his own kidnap,demands N18,000 ransom from his wife

News coming out of Uganda indicates that a 50-year-old man faked his own kidnapping and demanded ransom of about N18,000 from his family in desperate efforts to clear debts.

According to Tuko.co.ke, the unidentified man from Mparo Division in Uganda called his unsuspecting wife on Friday, March 2, 2018 and told her that he had been picked up by some unknown people.

According to region’s police spokesperson, Julius Hakiza, the suspect claimed his ‘kidnappers’ demanded KSh 54,000, which is about N18,000 in Nigerian currency, before they could let him go.

Terrified by the news, the wife alerted police, other family members and friends to help in rescuing her husband. It was then gathered that the family rallied round and began sourcing for the ransom that was requested by the ‘kidnappers’.

The amount of money requested for was eventually raised and immediately wired into the phone of the kidnapper via mobile money transfer.

Meanwhile, as the family did what they could to save the relative in trouble, investigators carried on their work by making attempts to trace the location and movements of the mobile device that was used in receiving the ransom paid by the family

The detectives said they were able to trace him to a place called Butebere village in Hoima District.

They found the ‘kidnapped man’ celebrating and feasting with friends. He claimed he was celebrating his release, but the officers suspected he was spending part of the cash he had received as ransom.

Further investigation revealed the man actually faked his disappearance in order to obtain cash from his wife and family.

The man was eventually reported to have taken a loan from a financial institution and they were already on his neck asking for refund of the loan.

More than 500 Canadian doctors and residents, as well as over 150 medical students, have signed a public letter protesting their own pay raises.

"We, Quebec doctors who believe in a strong public system, oppose the recent salary increases negotiated by our medical federations," the letter says.

The group say they are offended that they would receive raises when nurses and patients are struggling.


"These increases are all the more shocking because our nurses, clerks and other professionals face very difficult working conditions, while our patients live with the lack of access to required services because of the drastic cuts in recent years and the centralization of power in the Ministry of Health," reads the letter, which was published February 25.

"The only thing that seems to be immune to the cuts is our remuneration," the letter says.

US Concludes North Korean Govt Killed Kim Jong-Un's Brother, Set To Sanction Them In Response

The half-brother of Kim Jong-un was killed by a chemical attack in Malaysia on the orders of the North Korean government, the US has concluded.

Kim Jong-nam died after a bizarre encounter at Kuala Lumpur airport in 2017, when two women smeared his face with VX nerve agent.

The women, who say they believed they were carrying out a prank for a TV show, are on trial for murder.

The US said it would impose new sanctions on North Korea in response.


"This public display of contempt for universal norms against chemical weapons use further demonstrates the reckless nature of North Korea and underscores that we cannot afford to tolerate a North Korean WMD program of any kind," said State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert.

The US has consistently accused North Korea of being behind the attack on Kim Jong-nam.

Pastor Tony Rapu Involve In 18 Billion Naira Fraud

A businesswoman, Olaremi Dilureni, was remanded on Tuesday by an Ikeja Special Offences Court at the Kirikiri prisons for allegedly defrauding a Lagos pastor, Dr Anthony Rapu, and three others of N23m and $50m (N18bn) in a business deal.

Rapu, who is also a medical doctor, is the senior pastor at the House of Freedom Church.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Dilureni, who traded under the name, Creadon Ventures, faces eight counts bordering on conspiracy, obtaining money under false pretences and stealing, slammed on her by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

She, however, denied the charges.

The lead prosecutor for the EFCC, Mrs. Fadeke Giwa, said Dilureni committed the offence of conspiracy alongside four others, now at large, between March and May 2013.

He gave the names of the accomplices as Lola Anjorin, Tunde Oladunmaye, Oluremi Osubo and a company – Home Concepts.

“On April 16, 2013, Dilureni obtained N10m from Rapu under the guise that the money was for an investment in a diesel supply business with a monthly interest rate of 6.5 per cent.

“On April 17, 2013, the defendant received another N10m from Rapu for the business deal, ”she said.

According to the prosecutor, Dilureni defrauded two members of a popular Lagos family.

“On March 2013, Dilureni had fraudulently received the sum of $50m belonging to Mrs. Eyitope St. Matthew Daniel and converted the money to her use.

“On May 8, 2013, the defendant fraudulently received N320,000 from Mrs. Nellie St. Matthew Daniel on the pretext that the money was for the diesel supply business,” she added.

Giwa said the businesswoman also dishonestly received N3m from another individual, Mr. Adeojo Babasegun, for the business deal.

The offences violated Section 1(1), (3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Offences Act 2006, sections 5(2), 278,  285(1) and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2012.

After Dilureni’s plea was taken, Giwa told the court that she had just received summons for bail for the defendant from her lawyer and as a result needed time to respond in writing.

Dilureni’s defence counsel, Mr. Tunde Kolawole, however, in his submission, asked the court not to remand his client in prison, but rather in the custody of the EFCC.

He said, “She is a nursing mother and she has been in the EFCC’s custody since Thursday; she was just brought to court today.”

Justice Sherifat Solebo, however, declined Kolawole’s request, saying she was no longer the responsibility of the EFCC because her plea had been taken.

The judge adjourned the case until March 14 for hearing of the bail application.

White House chief economic advisor Gary Cohn has resigned from President Donald Trump's administration.

The former Goldman Sachs president and free trade advocate Cohn, whose departure date will come in a few weeks, decided to quit after Trump announced he would impose stiff tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.

In a prepared statement, Cohn said, "It has been an honor to serve my country and enact pro-growth economic policies to benefit the American people, in particular the passage of historic tax reform."

"I am grateful to the President for giving me this opportunity and wish him and the Administration great success in the future," Cohn said.
