A bricklayer, Dayo Samuel, has been arrested by the Ondo State command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps for allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl in the Ijoka area of Akure, Ondo State.
The 35-year-old bricklayer had allegedly been sexually abusing the victim for a long time before he was arrested.
The victim was said to be the daughter of the suspect’s neighbour. The suspect was paraded at the headquarters of the command in Akure by the state Commandant of the NSCDC, Mr Pedro Awili.
The NSCDC commandant, who said the suspect would “certainly face the wrath of the law,” explained that Samuel had threatened to kill the victim if she told anybody that he defiled her.
He said the victim, however, told her mother, who reported the matter to the corps, leading to Samuel’s arrest.
Awili said, “Abuse and defilement of minors have becoming a recurring crime in Ondo State and NSCDC has been collaborating with other security agencies to ensure that the trend is brought to an end in the state.
“The suspect will soon be charged to court after the completion of investigation.”
He appealed to the people of the state to work with the command by sharing security information so that the NSCDC could be able to deliver on its mandate.
The 13-year-old victim said the suspect used to give her N50 or groundnuts to lure her.
She said, “He would give me money or groundnuts before having sex with me. I later told my mother. It is my mother that told the civil defence people to arrest him.”
However, the suspect denied the allegation, saying the mother of the victim always quarrelled with him and had been looking for ways to get him.
“I didn’t defile the girl; the woman and her child are not telling the truth,” he said.
