A mother, Rhoda Joshua of Karu, has asked a Grade 1 Area Court, Karu,
Abuja, to order John Okechukwu, 27, of Nasarawa State to pay her N
800,000 damages for allegedly impregnating her 14-year - old daughter.
Joshua
told the court on Wednesday that her daughter, who was a Secondary
School 1 student in a school in Nasarawa State, had been in a sexual
relationship with Okechukwu since 2016.
“ My Lord , my daughter
has been seeing this guy since last year when she was 13 and as a
mother, I noticed she had started having sex with him.
“ I warned
her and even beat her to stop it but instead of bringing home a result
of flying colours , she brought this pregnancy nine months ago.
“
I kept cautioning my daughter against the relationship and advised her
to face her studies because I am a widow but she told me the guy said he
wanted to marry her.
“He impregnated her while she was still in
school so she had to drop out and since she took in till now that she
will give birth he has never given her even one naira for her or the
coming baby.
“ I have been the one taking care of her , the pregnancy and her younger one and I have no support from anywhere.
“
So , I am pleading with this Court to order him to pay me the sum of
N800,000 in damages for allowing her to drop out of school because of
the pregnancy and for not taking any responsibility since my daughter
became pregnant and for refusing to marry her.
“ He promised to
marry her but since she became pregnant till now that she will soon put
to bed, he has refused to even take us to his family members, keep to
his promise or take any form of responsibility, ’’ Joshua said.
In his response, Okechukwu said he was not ready to get married but would be giving a little sum for the upkeep of the girl.
“ My Lord, she will have my baby and that is my responsibility and I will be giving a token toward that.
“ Even if I don’t marry her that baby will make our relationship everlasting.
“
I am also a student and cannot get married now but I will try and be
giving a token for the upkeep of the baby. I am not sure of the future
itself, ’’ he said.
While responding to a question from the court
if she was ready to get married to the respondent , the victim said she
was not willing to get married to him.
“ I cannot marry him
because he did not keep to his words of getting married to me and taking
good care of me since I became pregnant rather he denied me and said he
can't marry me. ’’
After listening to all involved, the judge, Abdullahi Baba , said the case could only be heard in a customary court.
“
The issue brought by the plaintiff before this court is centred on
marriage and this can only be determined by a customary court of law.
‘”So , let this case be transferred to the Customary Court in Karu for a proper trial , ’’ Baba said.

Suspected Badoo cult members have launched a brutal attack on two churches in Owode Onirin, leaving two babies and a woman dead.
According to reports, the cult members attacked two orthodox churches – Cherubim and Seraphim Church, Crystal Church of Christ parish; and Celestial Church of Christ, Orisun Ayomi parish – both on Anibaba Street, Weigh Bridge, Owode Onirin.
PUNCH Metro learnt that in the church, the assailants killed a woman,
identified simply as Iya Dabira and her nine-month-old baby, Dabira.
A one year-old boy, Ayomide, was killed as well but his mother, who
was also attacked survives but she is in critical condition at the
General Hospital, Ikorodu.
The victims had reportedly attended a vigil at the church where they slept off in the church after the prayer ended at 2am.
The hoodlums reportedly scaled the church’s fence, which bordered an
uncompleted building and entered the house of God, smashing a big stone
on the heads of the four victims.

A member of the church, Tayo Moses, said Dabira died on the spot.
“The three others
were admitted to the general hospital. Dabira’s mother and Ayomide have
been confirmed dead. The only survivor is still unconscious,” he added.
Punch correspondent learnt that the pastor in charge of the parish,
Pastor Rotimi Ajidara, who lived in one of the apartments on the
premises, became aware of the incident around 6am and alerted other
residents.
A resident, Mrs. Tolulope Adelaja, said she participated in the
vigil, adding that she retired to her apartment when the prayer ended
around 2am.
“Around 6am, the
pastor alerted me to the incident. We took the victims in my car to Elam
Hospital. A doctor at the hospital confirmed Dabira dead and referred
others to the general hospital. It was a special vigil and the
congregation was few,” she added.

Another
resident, Oluwadare Anibaba, noted that members found a stone beside
the victims, adding that policemen from the Owode Onirin division took
away the stone.
“When the pastor alerted us, we rushed to the church and met the victims in a pool of blood,” he added.
The pastor in charge of the second church attacked by the gang,
Prophet Taiwo Adesanya, said the invaders stole some members’ property.
He noted that attacks by the gang might escalate to other parts of
the state if stringent security measures were not taken by the
government.
He said, “We
discovered in the morning that strangers had entered our church and
stole mobile phones. Nobody was attacked, but we saw traces of engine
oil on the ground.
“We were wondering about who the robbers were when we saw a crowd
in front of the nearby church. The Lagos State Government should take
proactive measures against these criminals. The gang members are
gradually moving away from Ikorodu.
“They attacked Owode Onirin today, people in Mile 12, Agege, Ikeja and even Victoria Island should be on the alert.”
The Chairman, Idera Tuntun Community Development Association, Owode
Onirin, Ganiyu Ogundipe, urged the police to station a patrol van at a
strategic junction so that they could quickly respond to distress calls.

A
resident, Ayo Folarin, said the attack could have been averted if some
landlords had not stopped a vigilance operation initiated by some youths
on Monday.
He said, “At about
12pm on Sunday, we accosted a boy who was wandering. When we queried
him, he said he was going to visit his brother on Ketu Estate. We
checked a small bag with him and found a handkerchief, lighter, kitchen
knife and four ATM cards.
“As we were questioning him, somebody came and said the boy was
not a Badoo member and that we should release him. A few minutes after
we released him, it occurred to us that we should have handed him over
to the police. We looked everywhere, but we couldn’t find him. We
decided that we would guard the community at night.
“In the evening, we knocked on the gates of all the
residents to come out for the vigil. Only a landlord came out to
encourage us. We made bonfires on the road and secured the community
till dawn. In the morning (Monday), people blamed us for the bonfires
and told us to stop the vigil.”
As the neighborhood discussed the attack, a man who identified himself as a mechanic was accosted by a mob.
He was accused of being a Badoo member and beaten to a pulp until he
was rescued and handed over to the Owode Onirin police division

A shocking video showing a wedding ceremony
between a 16-year-old boy and his 71-year-old lover has emerged. The
teenager and his elderly female lover had faced objections when they
decided they wanted to get married but they swore to kill themselves if
they were not allowed to be together and their families finally gave in.
The
video shows Selamat Riayadi marrying his bride Rohaya. It starts with
him holding a microphone, reciting what is believed to be his marital
vows. As soon as he is done, guests give a loud cheer for the new
couple. The young groom is seen with his hand to his face as soon as
their union is proclaimed, making it impossible to know what he is
feeling. His wife, on her part, sat quietly beside him, her expression
unreadable. It is not clear what motivated their marriage. Money has
been ruled out as both newlyweds are equally poor.
Selamat's
family made a dowry payment of 200,000 Indonesian Rupiah (about £11.50)
to Rohaya's family. The wedding held at the home of a local community
leader named as Kuswoyo. Many people doubted the authenticity of the
wedding after the video spread. But an Indonesian news outlet claims it
spoke to Kuswoyo who confirmed the marriage. He also disclosed that the
couple threatened to kill themselves if they were barred from marrying.
He
said: "They said they wanted to commit suicide because they were
completely in love, so if one of them dies, then both must die."
Rohaya
had been married twice and also widowed twice. It is Selamat's first
marriage. The official minimum age for boys to marry in Indonesia is 19
but a loophole allows for any marriage within a person’s "religious
norms".

Man Who Sold Two Boys For N1.3m Bags 11 Years Imprisonment
A chief magistrate court sitting in Asaba, Delta State, yesterday,
sentenced one Onyemachi Alor to 11 years imprisonment without an option
of fine for conspiracy and child stealing.
Alor was convicted on a two-count charge of conspiracy to commit child
stealing and child stealing, offences punishable under Sections 516 and
371 of the Criminal Code Law Cap C21, Vol.1 Laws of Delta State, 2006.
Prosecution witnesses told the court that on May 21, 2014 the accused
stole two young boys, aged five and seven, while they were playing in
their housing estate, while pretending that he was taking them to have
their hair cut.
Sales
“Rather than taking the boys, who usually referred to him as ‘uncle’ to
the salon, he took them to Abia State, where he sold them for N700,000
and N400,000, respectively, to a woman, who kept them locked up in a
room,” the witness added.
According to the witnesses, the accused person and his accomplice (the
woman) were later arrested and handcuffed by two police officers, who
disguised as potential buyers and recovered the boys.
He disclosed that the culprits were afterwards taken from Abia State to
Delta State Police Command where they were charged to court.
Justice
Sentencing the accused, the Presiding Chief Magistrate, Okonkwo Okanume,
held that the positive, direct and equivocal confessional statement of
the accused coupled with evidence of witnesses established his guilt
enough to sustain a conviction.
Okanume sentenced the accused person to five and six years imprisonment
without option of fine in counts one and two, respectively. He lamented
that child stealing was very prevalent in the society, adding that those
caught in the act should be punished to serve as a deterrent to others.

A former governor of Jigawa State, Senator Saminu Turaki , on July 4, 2017 arrested by agents of EFCC. He was picked up at
the venue of the public presentation of a book on Brigadier Zakariya
Maimalari, the first regular combatant icer in the Nigerian Army, in
Abuja.
Before the arrest, EFCC has had to declare Turaki wanted for failing
to present himself for trial since 2011 on 36 counts corruption charge
before the Federal High Court, Dutse.
The court had issued a warrant directing the Inspector General of
Police or his officers and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission
to arrest Saminu Turaki and bring him before the court. Justice S.
Yahuza gave the order after Turaki consistently failed to attend trial.
But attempts to execute the warrant failed as Turaki remained
elusive. On May 19, 2016 operatives of the Commission acting on a
tip-off had stormed the 16 Denis Osadebey Street Asokoro, Abuja home of
the former governor but he slipped through their hands.
Turaki faces multiple charges bordering on criminal conspiracy, stealing, money laundering and misappropriation of public funds.

“While the matter was being investigated, some members of the church on
Saturday came to report that Mrs Nwachukwu and Mr Abba had died during
deliverance in the church.
“They (church authority) said that Nwachukwu slumped during the prayer
session; they also claimed she had high blood pressure but the husband

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama is one of 11 players
who have been told they are no longer required by new Lille coach
Marcelo Bielsa.
The French club’s new Argentine boss
has also sent messages to Zambia’s Stoppila Sunzu, Tunisia’s Naim Sliti
and Ivory Coast’s Junior Tallo saying they are not part of his plans.
Enyeama,
who played 101 times for the Super Eagles, only signed a new deal last
season and could choose to follow the lead of Tallo. “As for me, I’m
under contract. I will respect the two years I have left.
I’m
in no hurry,” the Ivorian told French Newspaper L’Equipe. “I want to
establish myself at Lille. “It’s the club that wants me to leave. We’ll
see if they find a solution between now and the end of the transfer
window. I’m calm. It’s a bit bizarre, but I’m handling it OK. “I was
informed like the others, by text. We’re under contract, the club does
what it wants.
“We
would have liked to have had a discussion. But it’s a business choice
made by the bosses. The club has already made some summer signings
including Burkina Faso international goalkeeper Herve Koffi following
Lille’s disappointing 11th place finish in Ligue 1 last season. But the
African quartet, former captain Rio Mavuba, Eder, Julian Palmieri, Marko
Basa, Éric Bauthéac, Lenny Nangis and Marvin Martin have been ordered
to stay away from the rest of the squad as pre-season started on 3 July.
Enyeama, who joined Lille in June 2011 and has made 164 appearances, welcomed the signing of Koffi last month.
On
Monday, Enyeama tweeted a photo with some of his fellow outcasts, who
also include Montenegro international Marko Basa, France international
Marvin Martin and , stating: “Always a pleasure to be back with the
team.”
