Michael Kors Buys Italy's Versace Fashion House For $2.12 Billion
Fashion giant, Michael Kors has reportedly reached an agreement with Versace to buy the fashion outfit for $2.1 billion including debt.
Before the acquisition, Michael Kors were down 2 percent in premarket trading on Tuesday, after closing down more than 8 percent Monday when news of the deal leaked. Shares of Tapestry the parent of rival Coach, were down 1.73 percent in premarket trading.
The handbag maker which bought Gianni Versace for $2.1 billion, including debt will change its name to Capri Holdings, inspired by an “iconic, glamorous and luxury destination” island, the company said on Tuesday.
The management of Michael Kors, plans to grow Versace to $2 billion in revenue globally and increase its retail footprint from roughly 200 to 300 stores. It also expects to expand accessories and footwear from 35% to 60% of revenues.
The deal involves retaining Donatella Versace, who has helped run the company since her brother Gianni was murdered in 1997, to oversee the label. Donatella, her brother Santo and daughter Allegra will also stay on as shareholders in the company. Versace’s management team will continue to be led by its CEO, Jonathan Akeroyd.
“We are all very excited to join a group led by [Michael Kors CEO] John Idol, whom I have always admired as a visionary as well as a strong and passionate leader. We believe that being part of this group is essential to Versace’s long-term success,” Donatella said, as part of the company statement on Tuesday.
It was further gathered that this deal marks one of the first times an American company has cracked the code of super high-end luxury fashion, typically controlled by LVMH, the owner of Guerlain and Givenchy, and Kering, the owner of Balenciaga and Yves Saint Laurent. Michael Kors had already dipped its toes in European fashion, last year buying shoe brand Jimmy Choo for $1.2 billion.
Michael Kors has been eyeing the luxury space for quite some time. Both it and competitor Tapestry suffered the repercussions of expanding their affordable luxury brands too widely, thereby diluting their stature in the process.

Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger plays football at a charity match in memory of his late old time friend, Aldo Platini.
The match, which was also put on in an effort to raise money for sick children, took place in Nancy on Sunday afternoon
Legendary French midfielder and former UEFA president Michel Platini, son of Aldo, was also in attendance at the game which marked the opening of a stadium carrying the name of his father.
Aldo was the first individual to give Wenger a shot at football management at Nancy in 1984 and the Frenchman did not hesitate to take a chance to show his respect for his late friend.
Wenger finally left his post at the Emirates Stadium in the summer after a tenure spanning two decades, three Premier League title triumphs, seven FA Cups wins and an unbeaten season in 2003-04.
Speaking after the game, in which the former midfielder did not show his age on the wing, Wenger admitted that he is yet to make a decision on his future.
Asked if the footballing world would see him as a manager again, the Frenchman simply replied: ‘I don’t know, I don’t know’.
‘To be honest, for the moment, I have not really thought about that because I fixed myself something whereby in the first few months I would not take any decisions,’ he told local outlet L’Est Republicain
‘So I have not been too worried with that. It is not even going through my head.

Chelsea forward, Eden Hazard has revealed that he voted for Real Madrid midfielder, Luka Modric, to win the Best FIFA Men’s Player award.
Modric won the award ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo and Mohamed Salah.
It’s the first time since 2006 that Barcelona icon Lionel Messi has not been among the candidates for FIFA’s top award, and also the first time someone else won the award outside Messi or Ronaldo.
The nominees were voted for by national team coaches (25%), national team captains (25%), select media representatives (25%) and via an online vote (25%).
Speaking with reporters at the event, Hazard said, “I voted for Luka Modric, but Mo Salah is my friend so I would like him to win.”

Instagram co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger are leaving the smartphone photo-sharing service bought by Facebook six years ago for a billion dollars, the New York Times reported late Monday citing unnamed sources.
Systrom and Krieger have resigned from their posts as chief executive and chief technology officer respectively, not giving reasons and saying they planned to take time off, according to the Times.
Facebook did not respond to a request for comment.
Instagram in June announced it passed a billion active users, and unveiled a new long-form video feature in a bid to attract “creators” like those on YouTube
It became the fourth Facebook platform to eclipse the billion-user mark, including the namesake social network with more than two billion users, and the messaging applications WhatsApp and Messenger.
Facebook acquired Instagram in April 2012 for a combination of cash and stock worth some $1 billion at the time.
Instagram has been a hit with young internet users, an audience that Facebook is keen to keep in its fold.
