On-The-Run Fraudulent Couple Who Use Their Son To Defraud Victims Nabbed

A couple in Ogun State, 46-year-old Abiola Wahab and Toyin Abiola, have given the heinous crime of child trafficking a despicable new face.

The couple were said to have been on the run for a long time until nemesis caught up with the duo in Obatoko, Ogun State and they were arrested. They are now cooling their heels in the custody of the Special Armed Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Ogun State Police Command, where they are undergoing interrogation.

The couple are said to have serially used their three-year-old son, an innocent toddler, as collateral to defraud a long list of victims, from whom they borrowed money or bought goods on credit, which they sold and never paid the creditors.


The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ahmed Illiyasu told Sunday Sun that the husband and wife allegedly defrauded large-scale distributors of goods.

Giving insight to the modus operandi of the duo, he said that they would visit a distributor, collect goods worth millions of naira, pay in some money and then disappear and never return to settle the debt. He said the couple had duped victims in Oyo, Lagos, Osun and Ogun states.

To facilitate their operation and avoid detection, the police commissioner said that the couple always switched the number plate on their vehicle, which they drove to the business premises of their victims. This way, they were able to make it impossible for the victim who may have copied the vehicle number to trace them.

Illiyasu added that the command had been receiving several complaints about a couple that was duping major distributors and deceitfully taking goods from them on credit but never returning to pay.
On the strength of the complaints, the police commissioner said that an investigation was launched by the command. Through diligent investigation, the police was able to track down the couple.

They were arrested during a raid by a team of SARS operatives. The commander of SARS, Supol Uba revealed that the couple was nabbed in a home they built in Ikire, Osun State.

When she spoke with Sunday Sun at the headquarters of SARS, Toyin disclosed that prior to her getting involved in the fraudulent act alleged against her, she had been engaged in distribution of rice.

Her words: “I was into distribution of rice in Ikiru, Osun state. In 2008, somebody duped me of N1 million after I had supplied rice. My clients were pestering me for their money. The case was transferred to State CID Oshogbo and I was arraigned in court.
The magistrate ordered that I be remanded at Ilesha prison and adjourned the case. I was nine months old pregnant at the time. I delivered my second child in prison. The day that the magistrate granted me bail was also the day I gave birth. I spent only five days in the prison, and that was why I named my baby Aishat Abiola. The court ordered that we pay off the money within one month, but I could not afford to pay. So I jumped bail.”

She explained further: “Life was so difficult for us, the family of my husband and my own family assisted us and gave us N770,000 naira. We used the money to buy a car in Apapa in 2013. My husband and myself started trading in rice again. We would go to Saki to buy rice and resell. One day, a Customs officer duped us.

That was also when we began to dupe other people. We have duped a lot of people. We would collect assorted drinks and promise to pay but we would not go back again.

“When we go to visit a prospective victim, I would wear a hijab to disguise myself and seem like a pious Muslim woman. I would pay an amount with a promise to pay the balance after selling the goods. But I never went back.”

Also speaking, her husband disclosed that he married Toyin 11 years ago and they had faced difficulties in the course of the marriage. During their alleged fraudulent activities, he told Sunday Sun that they often took along their three-year-old son and pretended that he was sick.

“We used our three-year-old son as collateral in the deal and pretend that he was not feeling Well

Wahab said.

The unfortunate victims would because of the ill-health of the toddler show pity on the couple and allow them to go away with goods while temporarily leaving behind the supposedly sick child in the care of the victim, with the promise that they would come back to collect him and pay for the goods. Craftily, the wife would come back to take the child and disappear.

The couple’s cookie crumbled when they were perfecting arrangements for another duping expedition. As they were relaxing in the comfort of their home, SARS operatives who had been on their trail swooped on them and their child and arrested them.

Following their confessions during interrogation, the detectives invited some of the victims, who positively identified the duo, who the police commissioner assured would be charged to court soon.

200 Level Student Of ATBU Stabbed To Death In Gang War

Tragedy struck in Bauchi State on Wednesday night when a second-year student of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), identified as Yusuf Musa, was stabbed to death.

It was learnt that the undergraduate, a student of Mechanical Production Engineering, was killed during a fight, which was reportedly triggered by a misunderstanding between him and a fellow student three weeks earlier along a road.

The deceased, who was supposed to take his final examination of first semester, was said to have been embroiled in a war of words with a 500-level student of the school’s Geology Department, whose name was given as Dauda.

A source close to the victim, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Sunday Punch, “About three weeks ago, Yusuf and his friend were passing a road close to his house.

“They met Dauda with a lady, but he (Dauda) did not allow them pass. Yusuf’s friend then started exchanging words with him (Dauda), but immediately, Yusuf started pleading with him (Dauda) to allow them to pass through.

“Dauda then directed his insults at Yusuf. This angered him (Yusuf), so he also insulted Dauda; that was the genesis of the resentment that led to the killing of Yusuf.”

Sunday Punch gathered that the accused, on Monday, led a group of five other assailants to Yusuf’s house to assault him. They were said to have returned on Wednesday but neighbours reportedly intervened.

The source said, “Later that night, Yusuf told his friend about Dauda’s constant harassment. The friend and some other friends decided to go and meet Dauda at his home, probably to settle scores.

“It was after that that we heard Yusuf was hit with a big stick and then stabbed with a knife. All members of the two camps ran away, leaving him in a pool of his blood.”

A Good Samaritan was said to have taken Musa to the hospital but he reportedly gave up the ghost on the way.

“Yusuf was a very kind gentleman. People that met him easily liked him because he was very friendly,” he said.

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the university, Zailani Bappah, said, “I am aware of the incident and they are our students. But I must tell you that this did not happen on either the Yelwa Campus or the Gubi Campus. It didn’t happen on the school property.

“This is not our case but that of the police. I can only refer you to the police. The management is not officially aware of it; we are only onlookers. We are also waiting for them (police) to give us details of their investigations. We cannot say anything for now,” the university’s spokesman said.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Bauchi, Mahmood Mohammed, told Sunday Punch that the case had been transferred to the state Criminal Investigation Department.

“An exhibit was recovered from the scene of the incident; the stick which was used to hit the deceased. We are working hard to recover the other exhibit that was used to stab him,” Mohammed said.

The PPRO said the police had intensified efforts to arrest all fleeing suspects and bring them to book.

“So far, a suspect has been arrested and is helping us with our investigation,” he said.

EFCC Seizes Two Shopping Malls From INEC Chief

Many overnight big men in big trouble! Two choice shopping malls allegedly acquired by a serving Resident Electoral Commissioner with her share of a bribe dished out by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of last year’s general elections, have been seized by the EFCC.

A sum of N49 million found in the bank account of the REC who was in charge of Rivers State, Gesil Khan, has also been frozen by the EFCC.

A total of N23.29b was disbursed under the poll bribery scam allegedly facilitated by ex-Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, of which N185, 842,000 went to Khan.

The anti-graft agency applied to the Federal High Court, Yenagoa for Interim Forfeiture Order in line with sections 26 and 29 of the EFCC Act to take over the account and the buildings which are located in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital.

The order was granted, The Nation gathered.

Other beneficiaries of the largesse in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and some PDP stalwarts are said to have refunded N503million to EFCC.

Of the N503 million thus refunded, N200million came from a former Military Administrator of Akwa Ibom State, Air Commodore Idongesit Nkanga ( rtd).

A total of N450million was allegedly traced to him.

The EFCC is yet to conclude its investigation of the INEC staff and PDP stalwarts who were implicated in the poll bribery scandal. Khan and other INEC officers are being probed for allegedly collecting N681million altogether.

The other INEC officers already grilled in connection with the matter are: Fidelia Omoile (Electoral Officer in Isoko-South Local Government Area of Delta State)-N112,480,000 ; Uluochi Obi Brown (INEC’s Administrative Secretary in Delta State)-N111,500,000; a former Deputy Director of INEC in Cross River State, Edem Okon Effanga-N241,127,000 and the Head of Voter Education in INEC in Akwa Ibom, Immaculata Asuquo-N214,127,000.

A source familiar with the case said: “We have been able to trace two choice shopping malls in Yenagoa to the affected REC Khan. Following the development, we applied to a Federal High Court for Interim Forfeiture Order in line with sections 26 and 29 of the EFCC Act.

“The court has granted our prayers to seize the two malls and appoint managers to take care of the properties in order to generate more revenue either for the government or the owner depending on how the trial ends.

“We do not want the assets to lie fallow hence we recruited managers to be in charge until investigation and trial are concluded.

“During investigation, we discovered N49million in the account of REC Khan. Since she could not fully account for the sources of the money, we have frozen the account in line with our mandate.
“We are treating the money as likely proceeds of bribery or money laundering. The account will remain frozen until a court of law decides otherwise based on facts we will present during her trial.”

Businessman who just returned from US nabbed for N7m fraud

The police have arrested a United States-based Nigerian businessman Uzoukwu George for allegedly obtaining N7million from a couple under false pretence.

The police alleged that Mr. George, from Imo State, who resides at No. 22 Ogunlana Street, Aguda, Surulere, Lagos was arrested while he was trying to flee to the US.

George, 31, was accused of obtaining N7m from his business partners, Mr and Mrs Joachim Ezirim, on the pretence of forming a joint venture business with them.

The police said after collecting the sum, George left for the US, and remained there for some time while the couple were searching for him in Nigeria.

“The suspect sneaked into Nigeria, sold all his property and was about to leave the country with his family when he was arrested by detectives of the Area ‘A’ Command Lion Building, Lagos,” a police source told The Nation.

George has been arraigned before Abimbola Komolafe of the Lagos Magistrates’ Court in Igbosere, on a 3-count charge; conspiracy, obtaining by false pretence, conversion, issuance of dud cheques.

Prosecutor, Inspector Abass Abayomi told the court that George and others at large conspired to commit the alleged offences between 2011 and 2014 at No. 6, Bamgbose Street, Lagos Island.

He said the defendant “obtained the sum of N7m from the couple on the pretence to form a joint venture business with them but converted same to his personal use.”

“George issued post-dated FCMB cheques No. 03002064 and 03002066 in the sum of N1 million and N2.5 million to Joachim Ezirim for the refund of the money invested in the business, knowing full well that there was no money in the account and the cheques were rejected on presentation.”

The offence, he added, were punishable under Sections 409, 312 and 319 (b) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The defendant denied the charge. His lawyer, Chief M. C. Ikwunoh, urged the court to grant him bail in liberal terms.

“The defendant was granted administrative bail by the police and he did not jump abscond. He came to court voluntarily,” Ikwunoh said.

This was opposed by the prosecutor on the grounds that the defendant had already concluded plans to leave Nigeria.

“He is currently based in the United States of America and it was very difficult for the police to get him arrested,” Abayomi said.

In a bench ruling, Magistrate Komolafe granted the defendant N5 million bail with two sureties in the like sum, who must be gainfully employed and one of whom must be a blood relation.

They were also ordered to make a deposit of N250,000 to the court registrar’s account while the defendant must deposit his international passport in the court’s custody.

The case was adjourned till September 27, for commencement of trial.

Herdsmen Attack: MASSOB Blasts South East Govs, Says They Are Weak

Irked by the recurring killing and maiming of villagers in Enugu State by Fulani herdsmen and the seeming hopelessness of the security architecture in the state, the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, yesterday, described the governors of the South-eastern states as weak and incapable of performing the primary function of governance.

It said that had the governors established a pan-Igbo security outfit in addition to conventional security agencies, the South East geopolitical zone, would have been better protected against rampaging herdsmen.

This assertion was predicated on the fact that the governors of Ekiti and Abia states, had while responding to the activities of the herdsmen, promulgated laws aimed at checkmating their unwholesome movements. Specifically, the Ekiti State House of Assembly passed a bill banning free cattle grazing in the state, while Abia State governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu had ordered the revival of the moribund state-owned vigilante group, the Abia State Vigilante Services ,AVS, to enhance community policing.These, among others, were the measures many told Saturday Vanguard, had long been expected of Ugwuanyi, who had experienced series of devastating attacks on Enugu communities by herdsmen in the last four months.

In a statement by its leader, Mr. Uchenna Madus, said: “We blame Igbo leaders for these unchallenged confrontations, unwarranted and cowardice killing of our people by Fulani herdsmen in our own land. “The known enemies have the effrontery to commit this sacrilege today against Ndigbo who they were afraid of during Nigeria/Biafra war because Igbo political, religious, opinion leaders are afraid of Buhari.

“Until Igbo leaders wake up from their slumber and understand the efficiency, efficacy, and potency of Igbo-based grassroots organizations including the Biafra agitating groups who are committed to Ndigbo, Igbo land will continue to experience more devastating attacks. “Why should Igbo governors continue to rely on the security personnel in their states, spending millions of naira on them while neglecting groups that can ensure security in Igbo land?”

NBA star Dwayne Wade's cousin has been shot and killed in Chicago.

Nykea Aldridge became the unintended victim of a gang shooting in the city's Parkway Gardens neighborhood on Friday afternoon as she was pushing her child in a stroller.

The mother-of-four, who had recently had a baby, was gunned down in crossfire just 24 hours after the Chicago Bulls player discussed the shocking violence with ESPN.

The Chicago native and 12-time All Star later confirmed her tragic death on Twitter.

He wrote: 'My cousin was killed today in Chicago. Another act of senseless gun violence. 4 kids lost their mom for NO REASON. Unreal.'

Wade followed the heartbreaking message with: '#EnoughIsEnough.'

Aldridge, 32, was walking from Dulles School when two men approached another man and opened fire.

Reports suggest she had just enrolled her child to start classes. The infant wasn't hurt and was taken into custody by a family member at the scene.

According to ABC 7 Chicago, she was struck in the head and arm by crossfire.

She was taken to Stroger Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Wade's mother, Pastor Jolinda Wade said: 'Just sat up on a panel yesterday, The Undefeated, talking about the violence that's going on within our city of Chicago, never knowing that the next day we would be the ones that would be actually living and experiencing it.'

Two people are being questioned by police. The shooting remains under investigation.

How We Planned To Abduct Femi Otedola - Notorious Kidnap Kingpin Confesses To Shocking Crimes

Four months after the abduction of a former Minister of Education, 70-year-old Senator Iyabo Anisulowo, the Inspector-General of Police Special Intelligence Response Team, has arrested the alleged mastermind of the abduction, 28-year-old Ikechukwu Daniel, who made some startling confessions.

It will be recalled that Anisulowo, who represented the Ogun West Senatorial District between 2003 and 2007, was abducted in April 2016, with one of her security aides. The ex-minister was rescued after spending 10 days in captivity.

The police at the time arrested two suspects, through whom the IRT got information which unmasked Daniel as the leader of the gang.

If Daniel’s confession is anything to go by, one of Africa’s richest men, billionaire, Femi Otedola, would have fallen victim of the kidnappers.

According to the suspect, he and his gang planned to kidnap Otedola at a function in Ibadan, Oyo State in November 2015, but called off their attempt due to the presence of security operatives.

“It would have been impossible because the security there was heavy that day. We decided to take our time and prepare well for the operation,” he said.

According to him, someone working with Otedola brought them the job.

“The person told us that he was going to be in Ibadan and when we went there, we realised that there was heavy security presence around him. I told my gang members that we had to prepare well for the operation to be successful.

“I told them we needed to do a sacrifice and fortify ourselves spiritually before attempting to kidnap him. Then, we decided that we also needed army, DSS and police uniforms because without impersonation, there was no way we could get him.

“The man who brought the job was supposed to monitor his movements regularly. I already planned that if we abducted him successfully, it would have been my last job because I would have demanded N2bn and maybe we would have negotiated for N500m.”

But that would never be before the police captured Daniel, whose gang was said to have become a terror in the South West.

Saturday Punch learnt that Daniel’s fate was sealed when IRT operatives arrested one Mohammed Babuga during the week. Babuga was said to have revealed the location of Daniel’s hideout in Festac, Lagos.

By the time he was arrested, he was negotiating the N4m ransom of another victim his gang was holding.

A source at the IRT revealed that Daniel, a native of Imo State, grew up in Kaduna and is adept at ICT. He reportedly confessed to teaching Fulani kidnappers how to evade arrest using his ICT skills.

Daniel said his journey into the world of kidnapping started in 2014 after he was released from the Agodi Prison, Ibadan, Oyo State.

He said, “I was arrested in 2012 for hijacking a petroleum tanker truck on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. I speak Hausa fluently. While I was in prison, I realised that inmates were still arranging criminal jobs from the prison.”

Daniel said after he was discharged from the Agodi Prison for want of evidence against him, Babuga who was his cellmate, told him the way to make money was for him to join a kidnapping gang.

He said, “Mohammed Babuga had been discharged from prison ahead of me. When I first started, all I was doing was negotiating ransom anytime we kidnapped anybody.

“When we kidnapped the woman (Senator Anisulowo) I was the one who ensured that the woman was not killed because her family refused to pay ransom for her release.”

“The first person we kidnapped was a man whose name I cannot remember. We kept him in a forest in Ilorin, Kwara State and got N5m as ransom.

“We got N15m in our second job and I got N2m as my share. I used it to buy my first car.”

In details, he narrated what took place during the time, Senator Anisulowo was being held by the gang. Daniel said his members initially did not carry him along in the job.

He said, “They told me that they were expecting to get nothing less than N50m. But after the family of the senator refused to pay the the money and police were conducting raids all over the place, they decided to eliminate the woman.

“Police helicopter was hovering all over the place. My gang members then called me and said they wanted to kill the woman.

“I begged them for two days because they respect and listen to me. Luckily for the woman, she was released and they all ran away. The Fulani boys would have hacked her to death.”

Daniel said he had been ahead of security operatives for so long because he familiarised himself with the modus operandi of the Department of State Services and police in tackling kidnapping.

The suspect claimed that to get information, he contracted one of his friends, who is a hacker, to gain access into DSS and police websites.

“Through that, I was able to understand their methods. Before I was arrested, I already knew the police was looking for me. But I thought I would continue to escape them because I understood how they worked,” he said.

On his part, 32-year-old Babuga, a native of Kebbi State, said he used to be an armed robber until he was arrested in 2011 during an operation along Kaduna Road in Kwara State.

“It was my third robbery operation at the time some vigilantes in Ilorin arrested us and handed us over to the police.

“We were charged to court and I was remanded in prison. When I left Prison, I joined a kidnap gang.”

Three men who specialize in breaking into shops at the Mushin and Ladipo Auto Spare parts market in Lagos state are telling Federal Special Anti- robbery Squad FSARS policemen how they perpertrate the act.

The suspects were arrested following a tip off that they were allegedly breaking into a building material stall to cart away valuables and cash but luck ran out on three members of the six man gang as they were nabbed in the act.

According to the police, the suspects and thier gang members were allegedly behind series of burglary at Mushin and Ladipo market.

Following interrogation, the suspects who gave thier names as Ebuka Ubajide, Ifeanyi Okoye, and Emeka Ilebunam stated that thier leader one Chibuzor got the guns and cutter they use to break into the shops.

Two of the suspects, Ebuka Ubajide and Emeka Ilebunam confessed that they are sales boys at the Ladipo market. Ebuka who claimed he has been to two robbery operations with the gang revealed that Emeka hired them to rob his boss so they can make quick money. Ebuka Ubajide who claimed to be 24 years old
said
“ I am from Anambra state. I am a sales boy in Ladipo market. I met one Ekene while I was serving my master at the market.
However, sometimes last month, I asked Ekene how life was treating him and he said I should meet him at Isolo after the day’s job. I got to the spot where he was and I saw his friends with him. One of his friends called Chibuzor brought took us in his car for operation at Mushin where were broke into the shops and stole money.

The second operation at Ladipo market was orchestrated by Emeka. We met at our usual spot at Isolo and Chibuzor asked Emeka what is job was. Emeka told him that he was helping his boss to sell building materials. Chibuzor said Emeka will take us to his master’s shop and that was how we got them. Chibuzor brought out the guns and the cutter but as we were about to attack the shop that night, police men came from nowhere and attacked us. Chibuzor and two other guys escaped but we were not lucky’

Emeka on his part blamed bad friends for luring him to the gang. He said
“ My friends told me about attacking my boss’s shop. I felt there was money in the shop so I invited them to rob my boss. This is my first time. I felt there was money in the shop but we were arrested in the act and I regret my action”.

The third suspect Okoye said other gang members invited him from Abia state any time they are going on robbery operations. He said “I am from Abia state. I don’t know how the police got wind of our operations. I regret joining them”

Saturday Mirror gathered that the police recovered two guns and a cutter from the gang and are on the trail of other members of the gang.

"It's true Francis Paul has been arrested over the Olympics issues," said a police source who wished to remain anonymous.

"It is part of investigations into the Rio scandal on the mismanagement of the whole Games for the Kenyan team and the misappropriation of kits."

NBA CONFERENCE: RE-INVENT NOW OR LOSE RELEVANCE, ZINOX BOSS CHARGES LAWYERS

Chairman of Zinox Group, Africa’s most integrated Information and Communications Technology (ICT) conglomerate, Leo Stan Ekeh has called on Nigerian lawyers to re-invent in line with current technological realities or face the threat of losing relevance in the practice of the legal profession.

Ekeh made this call at the 2016 Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) which held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State from Tuesday August 23rd to Friday August 26th 2016.

While delivering a paper titled: Wealth Creation for the Lawyer in the 21st Century using technology, serial digital entrepreneur Ekeh challenged the audience which included Learned Silks, Honourable Body of Benchers and distinguished Members of the Bar, among others to wake up to the strong and compelling circumstances necessitating changes in the legal market place and forcing it out of its protective cocoon. 

Noting that the legal profession is one that is notoriously averse to change, Ekeh disclosed that the survival of any sector, profession or business organisation is directly dependent on its ability to innovate and align itself with the present digital revolution.

“In our present society, technology has permeated almost all sectors, industries and several human undertakings. Many sectors have been overtaken by the internet, mobile phone apps and people’s ability to find free information as against situations they used to pay for. Any organization or sector that refuses to innovate and embrace new technological realities will eventually die. 

The law profession must embrace this change and properly align itself to the benefit maximally from the present digital revolution. In this 21st century, a lawyer’s wealth shall be determined by the application of digital technology to his work. It is either the lawyer reinvents himself to the technological realities of the 21st century and its impact on service delivery to clients or the lawyer would eventually disappear from the radar of the legal profession.”

According to Ekeh, the revolutions in the field of ICT puts a lot of pressures on the legal profession which makes it imperative for the contemporary lawyer to re-tool in order to remain relevant in the scheme of things.

“Law has been something of a protected industry spared from some of the general business realities applicable to almost all other industries. Lawyers occupy a unique place with monopoly of access to legal knowledge, and no real competition. For instance, the relationship with the client is controlled by the law firm which decides almost entirely by itself how the services are to be delivered, and dictating the costs, pricing, and strategic direction. 

“Hence, as long as the status quo served the lawyer, there is no need to innovate or provide cost-efficient services. It is a closed market. But whereas, the seller (the lawyer) appears comfortable with the status quo, he fails to realize that his earnings can greatly be increased by innovation and technology which invariably would cause a disruption of the status quo in the legal marketplace. 

But now, there are strong and compelling circumstances necessitating changes in the legal market place and forcing it out of its protective cocoon.”

According to Ekeh, today’s lawyers stand a better chance of building new and sustainable wealth, only if they upgrade their knowledge and leverage on the numerous opportunities available through technology. 

Urging lawyers to explore businesses such as Family Offices which are increasingly being embraced by discreet but very successful clients, Ekeh counselled members of the audience to acquire knowledge on Family Council as well as professional management of Trusts instead of Will which is the cause of unlimited litigations and wastage of saved resources in many families in Nigeria. 

In addition, the Zinox helmsman disclosed other areas such as set-up of virtual/digital law libraries, cloud-computing, e-form and drafting templates, digital law reporting, e-conferencing as well as networking and the use of social media which could help the lawyer lend further technological refinements to the practice of the profession.

The session which witnessed a question-and-answer session also had in attendance the Honourable Minister of Communications represented by the Postmaster General of the Federation, Asiwaju Bisi Adegbuyi as well as representatives from the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) among others.

Police Rescue Another Little Girl Caged for Five Months

A forty -two-year-old lady, Mrs. Mary Matthew, was paraded by the Police in Akure, the Ondo State capital, for allegedly maltreating her late younger sister’s five-year-old daughter, Precious Michael.

Mary, who is a mother of six, was accused of chaining and caging the little Precious in a kiosk for five months for allegedly being possessed and suffering from an incurable disease.

Mary, an indigene of Enugu State but resident in Imafo, Akure North area, was said to have travelled to their home town last December, when she was informed of her younger sister’s death.

She later returned to her base with little Precious.

It was learnt Precious was put in the cage when Mary and her husband accused her of being possessed and suffering from a disease.

The five year-old girl fed, defecated and urinated in the cage for five months before she was rescued last month by the police.

Precious’ condition was said to have been pathetic, forcing an Assistant Superintendent Police (ASP), Special Children Centre at Akure “A” Division, Mrs. Olayemi Ojumu, to donate blood to her when the medical team said she needed blood transfusion.

But Mary, who denied caging the little girl, said she always lock her in a shop when going to the farm until she comes back.

Mary said she locks her up after she observed that one of her legs was swollen.

She said: “Immediately, I called my mother in Enugu that Precious’ leg was swollen, and she said she must have contracted the disease that killed her mother.

“I became perplexed, and in the cause of preventing her from infecting my other six children, I put her in a shop when going to the farm and when I return, I always remove her from that place. God is my witness.”

Precious accused her aunt of chaining her two legs and hands and flogging her before putting her in a cage.

She added that sometimes, she would not be fed by her foster parents.

Police Commissioner Mrs. Hilda Ibifuro-Harrison said the police came to the kid’s rescue when their neigbours told his officers about the girl’s situation.

The commissioner said when she saw the kid in her anaemic state, she could not control her emotion.

She hailed her officers, particularly the one who donated her blood, for the survival of the girl.

The police commissioner promised that the suspect and others apprehended in connection with the case would be charged to court.
