Another Female Corper Dies In Camp
Fear has gripped corps members at the Bayelsa State Orientation Camp at Kaiama, Kolokuma-Opokuma area of the state following the death of a female member of the National Youth Service Corps, who reportedly died in a mysterious circumstance.
The female corps member, whose name was given as Elechi Chiyerom, aged 27, was confirmed dead on Tuesday. She reportedly bled and vomited on arrival at the camp.
Elechi, a graduate of the Ignatius Azuru University of Education, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, was confirmed dead about 9pm on Tuesday five days after arriving at the camp.
Some corps members claimed the deceased on arrival at the camp last Thursday looked “terribly sick” and could not participate in some opening sessions at the camp.
Some officials of the NYSC claimed that the development was a case of “non-disclosure” of state of health by the corps member.
It was learnt that a search on her hostel section showed signs of excessive bleeding with her clothing and sanitary pads soaked in blood.
It was also learnt that the deceased corps member reportedly relapsed into ill-health and was rushed to the sick bay of the camp at about 8pm on Tuesday.
A source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “The doctor at the NYSC camp’s clinic immediately referred her to the state-owned Diette-Koki Memorial Hospital in the Opolo area of Yenagoa, the state capital, where she was confirmed dead.”

Armed Men Chase Monarch Out of His Palace in Ondo
Atijere in Ondo State and Makun-Omi in Ogun State share boundary, but the two communities had been laying claims to the ownership of a piece of land.
The ownership of the land has been causing incessant crisis between the two communities.
The National Boundary Commission was said to have intervened in the crisis before a fresh crisis erupted on Tuesday between the two communities, leading to many residents deserting their homes while some were injured.
The traditional ruler said he escaped being killed by the armed men who he alleged were sponsored by a local government chairman in Ogun State. He explained that he was guided out of the town by some of his subjects through the waterways.
He called on the state police command and the state government to come to their aid.
The traditional ruler said, “As I am talking to you now, I am hiding in one of the communities in the coastal area, while our people have been displaced. We are calling on the government and security operatives to come to our aid before it is too late
“We invited the officials of the boundary commission and they fixed a meeting between the two communities where it was resolved that the commission will meet with us on Monday November 28, 2016.
“But because of the Ondo State governorship election, we called for the postponement of the meeting.”
Ondo Police PRO, Femi Joseph, confirmed the incident. Men have been deployed to restore peace.

How We Escaped The Plane Crash – Lawmaker, Journalist
The Lamia 2933 flight, carrying Brazilian football team Chapecoense, crashed on Monday. Six of the 77 people on board survived.
Gelson Merisio, a state legislator for Santa Catarina and an ardent fan of the Brazilian club, planned to travel with the players to watch them take on Atletico Nacional in the first leg of their Copa Sudamericana final.
50yrs old Merisio had been looking forward to the game only to switch his plans late on because of work commitments.
“I want to be clear, that while I was scheduled to fly on the plane with the team, I opted not to do it due to work obligations this week,” he wrote in a statement on Facebook.
Later, after the severity of the crash became evident, he paid tribute to those who lost their lives.
Just three players, Jackson Ragnar Follmann, Alan Ruschel and Helio Hermito Zampier Neto, survived the crash. Three others, two crew members and a reporter also survived.
Doctors in Medellin amputated Follmann’s right leg and he is currently in the hospital’s intensive care unit, according to Juan David Arteaga, the Undersecretary of Social Protection for the state of Antioquia.
Arteaga says Neto is under observation following multiple surgeries and Alan Ruschel is in the ICU.
Another person originally supposed to be on the plane was journalist Ivan Agnoletto. He said he gave up his seat for colleague Gelson Galliotto, who had always dreamed of covering such a huge game.
Agnoletto said, “The pain is still too much for me to think about if God would’ve saved me... I was scheduled to cover the game, but my colleague had a huge dream to cover an international final.
“When I told Gelson Galiotto the news that he could go in my place, he could not believe it: ‘Really? I’m really going?’ It was his dream.”
Agnoletto said he did not hear about the crash until his wife began to receive a barrage of calls with people offering their condolences.
“It was as if I was dead,” he added. “I went to the TV and saw the plane had crashed.”

School supervisor accused of teaching two-year-old pupil sex education & molesting her
Adenekan, a supervisor in Chrisland International School in Victoria Garden City (VGC) Lagos, was alleged to have defiled the girl under the guise of teaching her sex education.
Commissioner of Police Fatai Owoseni, who paraded Adenekan yesterday at the command’s Ikeja headquarters, said the suspect was arrested following a complaint by the victim’s mother at the Ikeja Police Division.
He claimed that preliminary investigation showed that the pastor defiled the girl, stressing that the suspect would be charged to court.
Adenekan said he got a call from the pupil’s mother accusing him of defiling her daughter.
The suspect denied committing the crime saying:
“I am a teacher from that school; what happened was that on Friday, November 11, I got a call around 8am from one woman and she identified herself as the mother of pupil. She alleged on the phone that I sexually abused her daughter.
I then asked her, when, where did it happened, but after all said and done, she said, I want it between the two of us and I have not even told my husband. So when she dropped, I was disturbed. Few minutes after that, she sent a text message to me telling me that she still wants me to remain friendly with her daughter because she knew her daughter holds me in high esteem. She said I should still be a friend to her and all that. I must tell you that I wasn’t myself throughout that day.
Again, I got a call the following day, from a man who identified himself . It was an international call. The man also said that I assaulted his daughter sexually and I said, I don’t know what you are talking about, that even yesterday, your wife called me and said the same thing. And I said, when could this happen in a nursery school where no one picks the children except the parents. You walk into the class and pick the child. I don’t know.
I have never been alone with this girl, I have never bought any gift for her, and I had never taken her out anywhere. I was so shocked and the man ended the call when I told him all these. And immediately I called my head teacher, Mrs. Azike and I said Ma, this is the allegation I got from this parent which I knew nothing about.
I want the police to do their investigation. I am ready to submit myself for investigation. I was told the girl is two years and ten months old. I know God will vindicate me. I am married for 15 years with children. The teacher of the girl is saying that nothing of such happened and that the girl never left her custody.
This girl comes to school with school bus, from what I have heard, and then goes with her school bus. I am a supervisor in that school. I don’t teach. So the allegation that I teach the children sex education is so disturbing to me. I have never taught that girl, I have never taught in that class. She said she took the girl to one private hospital and it was confirmed that the girl was abused.
I was told that I failed the lie detector test which I willingly made myself available for but I never heard of such a thing before. It was after that that I went online to research about polygraph. Before we got there, she first of all went there and paid for the test. She did all the arrangement before us and I failed the test.”

Notorious Alaba Thieves Who Operate With ACID Arrested
The modus operandi of the syndicate was to destroy padlocks of their target shops with acid.
It was gathered that the suspects – Tochukwu Akorisa, Ndubuise Egwuatuonwu, Ifeanyi Eze and Aboi Rufus – had attacked a warehouse in the market, stealing 427 cartons of electric bulbs valued at N19.1m.
The shop owner reported the incident to the police, leading to the arrest of one Tona Nwenyi, who allegedly bought some of the goods from the suspects.
Nwenyi led the detectives attached to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police X-Squad to Akorisa, who reportedly coordinated the robbery operation.
A detective told Punch that Nwenyi was caught at the point of selling the stolen goods.
“Akorisa subsequently led us to his accomplices. Two other persons, Tony Eme and Ejike Chinwoba, who bought the bulbs from the gang, had been arrested.
“We have recovered about 100 cartons out of the 427 cartons they made away with, which is worth N19.1m,” the source said.
Twenty-six-year-old Akorisa, confessed to the act, adding that he intended to use the proceeds of the robbery to give his ailing mother a medical attention.
He said, “I load goods in the market. But the money I earned was not enough for me to take care of my sick mother. I led the operation. We used acid to break the padlock of the warehouse. We went around 9.30pm on that day.”
Egwuatuonwu explained that it was Akorisa, who facilitated the sales of the loot, adding that he was promised N250,000 from the deal.
“But I have not got anything before the police arrested me,” he added.
On his part, Rufus said, “This is my first time. My house rent has expired and I had been living with my friends. I want to rent an apartment. I was thinking of how to get money when Tochukwu (Akorisa) suggested that we rob the warehouse. We stole only 150 cartons of bulbs.”
One of the receivers, Nwenyi, said he wanted to return the bulbs to Akorisa, having discovered they were stolen, when he was arrested.
Chinwomba said, “I bought 30 cartons from Tochukwu. I have paid for 15 cartons. I didn’t know the goods were stolen.”
Police detectives are on the trail of other fleeing suspects.

A commercial tricyclist in Owerri, the Imo State capital, and an Abuja-based trader have been caught by National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) officials at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos with 6.390kg of heroin.
Cajetan Chinedu Egwin, was arrested on arrival from Kigali, Rwanda,while King Sunday, was nabbed on arrival from Nairobi, Kenya.The drug with an estimated street value of N575 million was hidden in their luggage.
“Egwin arrived from Kigali on a Rwanda Airline flight while Sunday imported the drug found on him from Nairobi during inward screening of passengers on an Ethiopian Airline flight. The suspects are being investigated.
“Preliminary investigation by the agency, however, indicated that drug trafficking cartels are gradually changing their mode of operation by turning to African countries in sourcing narcotic drugs like heroin. The suspects were also recruited for a fee to import the drugs into the country. Egwin who is not married said he needed money to repair his commercial tricycle while Sunday who left his wife after four days of marriage under the guise of a business trip said that he needed money for his honeymoon and business.”
Egwin, a commercial tricycle rider in Owerri said
“The engine of my tricycle which is my only source of livelihood is bad. While I was looking for money to fix it, I was introduced to the man that promised to pay me N400,000 on the condition that I will bring his drug from Kigali. I accepted the offer because nobody was willing to help me. Apart from the repairs, my rent is due and my landlord has been asking for his money,” he said.
Sunday said
“I erroneously took the decision to smuggle drugs barely four days after my marriage. I was in need of money for my honeymoon and also for my business but I should not have involved myself in drug trafficking. My thinking was that I could smuggle the drug from Nairobi in two days without my wife knowing that I travelled out of the country. All my life, I have been upright in my transactions but this is a huge mistake and I regret my action.”
NDLEA’s Chairman/Chief Executive Col Muhammad Abdallah (rtd) said drug traffickers were turning to African countries to smuggle heroin produced in Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Thailand and other far away countries.
”The Agency successfully foiled their plan with the arrest and seizure of the drugs. Drug cartels thought it would be easy to smuggle the drugs into the country since heroin is not produced in Africa but I am happy that we are thinking far ahead of them,” he said.

Ex-UNILAG beggar becomes Lawyer
A former street beggar, Mr. Abdulsalam Idowu, heaved a sigh of fulfilment of a life ambition as he was called to the bar to start practising as a lawyer in Nigeria on Wednesday.
Idowu, who defied all odds, to bag his law degree from the University of Lagos in 2015, had proceeded to the Nigerian Law School, where he emerged successful in the August/September 2016 final bar examinations conducted at the end of the one-year programme.
The new wig, who engaged in street begging to fund his primary and secondary education, was among the 4,225 graduates of the Nigerian Law School called to the bar in Abuja on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Having lost his mother at about age three, crippled by a disease that befell him thereafter and left with a father and relatives who had no interest in his future, Idowu started begging at age eight in Erin Ile, Kwara State, to see himself through his primary and secondary school education.
Against all odds, the 37-year-old had earlier in 2011 obtained a degree in Political Science from the same University of Lagos.
Not satisfied without a Law degree, he struggled to secure admission to study Law while in the final year of the first degree programme.
Idowu spoke with our correspondent on Wednesday at the International Conference Centre in Abuja, venue of the two-day call-to-bar ceremony.
He said, “I was not satisfied when they gave me admission to study Political Science because I have always wanted to be a lawyer.
“So, I struggled to get admission to study Law. I got the admission when I was in my final year, writing my final project for the Political Science degree.”
He narrated how he began to beg for alms to enable him to get education, a sojourn which he said landed him in Lagos, where he was able to raise money to complete secondary school and later got admission to the University of Lagos.
He said, “It was sometimes in 1987, I was about eight years old in the public kindergarten school. All my mates were promoted to primary one but I was not promoted.
“I asked why because I attended classes and sat for exams. I was then told that I was not a registered pupil but they only allowed me to attend classes and take exams.
“That day I felt very sad and on getting home I called everybody, including my father and aged paternal grandmother, whom I was staying with, because I was very angry.
“I told them that I wanted to be registered in school but they said there was no money and that there was no way I could cope in school because of my condition. But I insisted that they must register me and that they should not bother about paying my fees.
“They registered me and as soon as they did, I took to the street begging for alms to meet some financial demands that came up.
“When I gained admission in 1993, I could not afford N520 school fees but I had been hearing the story of Lagos State that one could make money in Lagos State. So, one day I was begging in Offa, Kwara State, then I said why shouldn’t I join a train to Lagos and perhaps I could make money to pay for the fees, buy a uniform and get my locker. So, I joined the train to Ido terminus in Lagos. I started begging. I stayed with some people under the bridge and I was begging in some areas including Idumota.”
He said he was travelling to and fro Lagos to raise money which he used to settle his fees till he got to the final class when he was supposed to write his O’Level West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations which he could not raise money for.
He later relocated to Lagos fully where he was able to raise enough money through his begging business to sit for the WASSCE as a beggar and passed after two attempts.
He subsequently gained admission to UNILAG with the intention of continuing his alms begging business to raise money to continue his education.
He had just N39,000 as savings from his begging business when he got admission.
But he exhausted the money after completing his first semester registration.
He was however lucky that some compassionate Nigerians and organisations decided to sponsor him after reading his story in The PUNCH.
Speaking with PUNCH on Wednesday, he attributed the inspiration which drove him to bagging two degrees as “God’s miracle”.
“I thank God because if not for Him and those He used to come to my aid, I can be nowhere now,” he added.
He said his immediate plan was to get a job in a law firm.
“I wish to set up my law firm later and in the nearest future I want to become a judge,” Idowu said.

Marcos Danilo, 31, was flying with his Chapecoense teammates when their plane went down near the town of La Ceja in Colombia.
According to reports, the devoted husband and dad of one initially survived the crash and was able to call his wife from a hospital bed. But he later died.
