We’re not responsible for economic meltdown, FG tells Nigerians

The Federal Government, yesterday, told Nigerians that the current administration under President Muhammadu Buhari was not to be blamed for the current economic woes of the country.
It said that it was on a rescue mission to right the wrongs of the past governments. This came as the 36 state governors have agreed to cut down the size of their convoys, excessive travels amongst others to fight recession.

These were the highlights of the meeting of the National Economic Council, NEC chaired by Vice
President Yemi Osinbajo at the presidential Villa, Abuja.

The Federal Government’s self exoneration is coming barely one week after the National Chairman of the ruling party, All Progressives Congress, APC, Chief John Oyegun, admitted that some first missteps of the government upon assumption of office May 2015 affected the country’s economy negatively.

Similarly, Imo State governor, Mr. Rocahs Okoroacha, who is also an APC governor, it will be recalled, recently accepted blames for the economic downturn on behalf of APC.

But briefing State House Correspondents at the end of Wednesday meeting of the National Economic Council, NEC, Minister of Budget and National Planning, Mr. Udo Udoma alongside Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State and Anambra State Deputy Governor, Mr. Nkem Okeke absolved the Federal Government from blames, saying the APC government was on a rescue mission.

He said:

“We did not and are not responsible for the current economic situation we find ourselves. We are actually a rescue team, a team working to rescue Nigeria from the position we find ourselves in.
Under President Buhari, we are determined to take Nigeria out of the situation. The situation started long before we came. As you know, oil price started falling from 2014 when it was about $110 and by January this year, it was below $30. Unfortunately, they did not save.
We are determined to take Nigeria from a consuming nation to a producing nation. That is why we are developing an economy recovery plan and that is our focus. We are committed to success.”

In Apapa, Top LASTMA Officer Was Killed by Mob

There was confusion in the Liverpool, Apapa area of Lagos on Thursday after an irate mob lynched a commander of the Lagos State Transport Management Agency (LASTMA), Mr. Bakare Olatunji.

It was learnt that Olatunji, who was the zonal head of the agency in the Apapa area, had led a team of officials to the area in a patrol van to arrest erring motorists at about 11am.

It was that tanker drivers, who parked vehicles on the road fled on sighting the enforcement agents.

Unfortunately, the LASTMA van was said to have ran into an assistant driver (motor boy) while he struggled to escape arrest.
The boy, whose name had yet to be ascertained, was reportedly sleeping by the roadside.

He died on the spot.

Angered by the boy’s death, his friends were said to have regrouped and went on the rampage, killing Officer Olatunji in the process.

A mechanic in the area, Uthman Salau, told Punch that another LASTMA official was injured, while others fled the scene.

He said, “The drivers were relaxing around 10.30am when they saw a LASTMA van approaching. They felt the officials had come to arrest them for parking vehicles indiscriminately. So, they ran away. A motor boy, who was sleeping beside a tanker, was woken up by the commotion. Before he could escape from the spot, the LASTMA van hit him and he died instantly.

“One of the drivers, who saw the boy lying in a pool of blood, called his colleagues and they stormed the scene with cutlasses, bottles and all sorts of weapons. The officials fled with the van except their team leader (Olatunji). They stabbed him to death.”

However, an eyewitness, who gave his name only as Issa, said the operatives had flagged down a motorist, who refused to stop, adding that the agency’s van knocked down the boy as they gave the driver a chase.

“LASTMA agents are fond of extorting money from motorists on roads around here. Their leader waited behind after his men had fled, thinking that he could pacify the angry youth. But he was not lucky. They killed him,” he said.

A driver, who did not disclose his name, said he got to the scene after Olatunji had been killed.

“I am not sure whether the LASTMA officials were chasing somebody or not. What I learnt was that the boy was killed by their van, which sparked off the protest and the eventual killing of one of the officials,” he added.

A LASTMA official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said his colleagues had been under fire for lax enforcement which made them to intensify operations in the area.

He said, “Ordinarily, they would not have gone for operations in that area. However, two weeks ago, the management was angry that we have not performed to expectation in terms of enforcement. Each zone was asked to generate N12m by December 19. So, we are under pressure to deliver. That is the reality we are battling with.”

LASTMA spokesperson, Mahmud Hassan, said investigation had commenced to ascertain the cause of the incident. He, however, refuted the claim that the agency was mandated to generate revenue.

He said, “I can confirm his (Olatunji’s) death. We are still investigating and I will get back to you. The Lagos State Government did not set up LASTMA as a revenue generation agency. We are there to provide services to the good people of the state. So, we are not after generating revenue. What we are after is safety on Lagos roads and our men are professional. That is our primary duty and responsibility and that is what we have been doing day and night.

“No target is given to anybody. We are not compelled under any circumstance to meet certain target at a particular time of the month or year.”

The Lagos Police PRO, SP Dolapo Badmos, said the case was under investigation.

See photos from the world's most overcrowded jail

In the world's most overcrowded jail, cells built for 30 people are crammed with up to 130 criminals.
With barely any space to move, convicts can be seen glumly staring from behind bars as every inch of space is used.

These shocking images show how a bloody drugs war in the Philippines is forcing jails to breaking point with dozens of criminals packed into tiny cells.

An investigation by Sky News reveals that Quezon City Jail currently has more than 3,000 inmates within its walls - despite being built to only house 800.

President Rodrigo Duterte has pledged to beat drugs in the nation by any means necessary.

His crackdown has seen more than 40,000 drug-related arrests since July but the impact on jails has meant many inmates are forced to sleep in recreation areas as there is no room whatsoever in cells.

Crammed in like battery cage hens, more than 130 people sleep in cells built for no more than 30.

Lying side by side, the criminals do not even have enough room to stretch out.

As many as 10 people will also share a single bunk.

We Can Still Extradite Kashamu To Face Drugs-Related Charges – NDLEA

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has described as false the claim by the senator representing Ogun-East senatorial district, Buruji Kashamu, that a court had perpetually restrained the Federal Government from extraditing him to the United States of America to face drugs-related charges.

This was contained in a counter-affidavit filed by the NDLEA before a Federal High Court in Abuja to oppose the contempt proceedings initiated by Kashamu against the agency and other respondents.

Kashamu had filed the contempt suit before Justice Gabriel Kolawole against the Chairman of NDLEA, the NDLEA itself and the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice.

He anchored the contempt suit on an allegation that the three respondents were taking steps to extradite him to the USA in disobedience to various court orders.

Justice Kolawole had last year struck out the extradition proceedings initiated by the then Attorney General of the Federation, Mr. Mohammed Adoke, against Kashamu.

The decision by Justice Kolawole was based on the previous rulings of the Lagos Divisions of the Federal High Court which had ruled against the planned extradition.

But the NDLEA, in a counter-affidavit deposed to by one of its litigation officers, Mr. Rifkatu Barde, said the court orders referred to by the senator did not prevent the respondents from taking lawful steps to extradite him.

The counter-affidavit read in part, “The respondents cannot be restrained perpetually from arresting the applicant. What the respondents are hereby restrained from doing, that is, assuming they can even act on any application for his extradition – having regard to the substantive judgment, is unlawful arrest or abduction without a warrant duly issued in line with the Extradition Act as amended.

“The decision of the court in the case of Kashamu did not shut the door to any lawful steps that may be subsequently taken to extradite him pursuant to the Extradition Act Cap. E, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.”

The agency stated that Kashamu had been using false text messages to mislead the court and that the call log which he claimed to have obtained from a service provider did not support his claim about the alleged attempt to forcefully abduct him and ferry him to the USA to face drug charges.

The NDLEA, however, stated that the Lagos Division of the Federal High Court had only ruled in favour of Kashamu in 2010 to the effect that any plan to extradite him by the Attorney General of the Federation and the NDLEA to the USA must be in compliance with the Extradition Act, 2004.

The agency explained that it was not a respondent to a suit with No. FHC/ABJ/CS/479/2015 which Kashamu alleged was disobeyed.

The counter-affidavit also read, “That Hon. Justice E. O. Abang, in his judgment in suit No. FHC//L/CS/49/2010, clearly stated that the delicate aspect of this case which the court must be extremely be careful with is that the allegations contained in the petitions against the applicant border on allegations of commission of criminal offences by the applicant.

“That police or any security agency cannot be restrained from discharging their statutory duties, a court of law cannot restrain the police or security agencies from discharging their statutory functions.”

The agency also stated that Kashamu “is in the habit of indulging in deliberate distortion of facts to mislead the courts and overreach the course of justice by distorting facts and tendering enrolled orders as opposed to full judgment of courts.”

Kashamu was represented by his lawyer, Mr. Raphael Oluyede, when the matter came up before Justice Kolawole on Thursday.

The NDLEA, which was represented by Mr. Mike Kassa, notified the court of its counter-affidavit.

The AGF’s lawyer, Mr. Agbaji Ochai, also said he had filed a similar court process.

The judge then fixed February 16, 2017 for hearing in the case.

NFF Thanks Buhari For Interfering, But Failed To Mention When They Will Be Paid

The Nigeria Football Federation has expressed heartfelt appreciation to President Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR) for directing that players and officials of African champions, Super Falcons be paid within days, following the team’s protest at the Three Arms Zone on Wednesday.

“We are grateful to the Presidency for the prompt action, and we believe this will put the minds of the players at rest. It has been a very difficult time for the NFF; no official of the Federation was happy that the players and officials could not be paid their entitlements immediately after the tournament.

“It is not as if the Federation did not plan to pay the players and officials their entitlements. The NFF expected some money from a number of sources but this did not work out. They are champions and deserve to be treated as such; there are no doubts about that,” Ademola Olajire, NFF’s Director of Media and Communications, said on Thursday.

Olajire also stated that there was no time the NFF directed that the players should be ejected from their Agura Hotel, and decried claims that no official went to see the players at the hotel.

“The NFF is at the receiving end of all these, but at the end of the day, fair is fair. Before they left for Cameroon, the country’s Vice President went to meet with them at a training session. Also, despite the difficulties, the Federation was able to make the sum of $5,000 available to the Team Administrator for logistics. The NFF President personally visited the team and prayed with them.

Ex-Delta Beauty Queen sends thugs to attack her Husband's friend (photos)

"My Name is Okorodudu Anthony Ejomafuvwe, I hail from Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta state.
Here is what happened to me...
I visited a friend in Ghana called TONY IGBIWU and I've stayed with him now for a month and 3 weeks, i went there for 3 months vacation. My eldest brother stays here too but I decide to stay with him. When I entered Ghana, I located the nearest police station and made them aware of my presence in the country, I showed them my Identity Card as a uniform man that I am in my country Nigeria.

And for the past 2 weeks now, his wife has been acting funny and been asked me to always give her space which I did.

I was driving the wife along Spintex road in Ghana and she told me that she'll black-mail me in the country and I laughed about it, and told her it won't happen, she replied saying "WE SHALL SEE".

The husband has two houses in Ghana, 1 is at Spintex road and the other at Teshe Rasta Police Post.

He has up to 8 boys under him. His uncle is the Chief Judge in Asaba, Delta state.

One of the boys in his other house at Spintex called Julius also had issues with the wife too, and I keep telling that boy to go and apologize to the wife because she and her husband are good people and he shouldn't do anything to offend them. And the boy yield to my advice, and tried making peace with the wife but she kept laying courses on the boy.

When the same boy told me, I asked him to calm down and wait till the husband return from Nigeria so that all issues will be sorted out.

The husband returned but no issue was discussed. Just yesterday, the husband traveled to Nigeria and the wife went to her shop. Few hours later, the wife drove in with some other boys and they brought out that same Julius from the car; they've beaten him up and n*ked him.

I came down stairs and asked what happened that warrant such beating on that boy, before I could complete my statement they faced me and they started beating me up with all sort of things. Some of the things they used on me was Bottle, Shovel, Ply wood, Cable Wires, Broken Tiles.

I begged for my life and God helped me out. All conversation i had with that boy is on whatsapp and my phone is with the wife even as we speak. I was able to remove some pieces of bottles from my head while I was bathing. The wife took a video coverage of all what happened yesterday and it has been more than 24hours now, but the Ghanian police hasn't done anything yet about the case reported to them.
The name of the wife is Elo, she was the winner of Miss Delta, 2010. I've reported to the police but they know him (my friend) too well, he do give them some tips and because of that, nothing has been done about the issue.

His wife's mother lives at the end of Oba group in Udu road, Ovwian delta state.

Justice must be done. The other boy that was also beaten has been locked in one of the rooms inside the house. I was able to get hold of my computer and send my Eldest Brother a message on facebook and he sent people to come rescue me out of the house.

I did not steal from him (my friend), nor do I have anything to do with his wife but he treated me this way. I have rescued him from lots of police case in Nigeria, and when I visited him, he decided to treat me this way.

Mr Tony Igbiwu always say that when a man has money, he is never scared of problems and now he brought those same words to me. I won't let him go with this. If the Law cannot do anything, then nature will take its course.
Some of the names of the boys that attacked me are;
Timothy (His username on facebook is DB Paris Teenine), Silver, Rawlins, Samuel and Tabansii (His username on facebook is Chif Mena Tabansii).

I need justice for what my friend's wife did to me and he's supporting her."

- when you noticed your friend's wife doesn't want you in her husband's house, you should have left.

Lionel Messi reportedly set to marry the mother of his kids, Antonella Roccuzzo

Barcelona star Lionel Messi is reportedly set to marry his childhood sweetheart Antonella Roccuzzo next summer.
The wedding is expected to take place in their native city of Rosario in Argentina where they met as children through Lucas Scaglia, Antonella’s footballer cousin and a close friend of Messi.

Local journalist Juan Pablo Varsky broke the news on Wednesday on a radio programme.

City newspaper La Capital said it had confirmed the union with a relative of the footballer’s who told them: “It’s true, there’ll be a wedding the middle of next year."

Leo’s birthday of June 24 is already being talked about as the most likely date.

Messi is expected to return to Rosario around June 12 next year after completing a tour with his club.

The entire Barcelona squad is expected to be invited to the wedding along with some ex-players and most of Argentina’s national squad.

The city cathedral is being touted as a possible venue for the wedding with the subsequent party expected to take place at the Messi family home in Arroyo Seco near Rosario overlooking the Parana River.

There has been no official confirmation yet from Antonella and Leo, who started dating in 2008 and have two children Thiago, 4, and Mateo, one.

The 29-year-old footballer, one year older than his long-term partner, first met supermarket owner’s daughter Antonella when he was nine.

He used to write love letters to her as a teenager but they didn’t formalise their relationship until he was 21.

They didn’t confirm they were dating until 2010 when Antonella travelled to Barcelona for the first time and moved in with her boyfriend.

They became inseparable after the death of a friend of Antonella’s in a road traffic accident shortly before she left Rosario for a new life in Spain.

Man, 46, Bags 14 Years Jail Term For Raping 8-Year Old

                      Image result for Court

A Federal High Court sitting in Kano, yesterday, sentenced a 46-year-old man, Salisu Abdullahi, to 14 years in jail for raping a minor.

The presiding judge, Justice J. K. Omotosho, said that the court was convinced beyond reasonable doubt that the convict carried out the act and convicted him without an option of fine.

Salisu Abdullahi was arraigned on charges that has root in illicit sexual intercourse with an eight-year-old girl (names withheld). National Agency for the Prohibition in Trafficking in Persons, NAPTIP, had arraigned the convict on a one-count charge, stating that the convict acted in a manner that contravened the provision of Section 16 of NAPTIP Enforcement and Administration Act, the court heard.

However, counsel to the convict, Mr. Jamilu Ahmed, urged the court to tamper justice with mercy in view of the fact that his client was a first offender. Ahmed told the court that the convict is married with children, adding that he has an aged mother, who all depend on him for livelihood, noting that Salisu is remorseful and “has been in custody for close to one year.”

Delivering his judgement, Justice J. K. Omotsho resented the unrepentant attitude of the convict, while the trial lasted. He ordered Salisu to proceed to serve 14 years in jail without an option of fine and also ordered the convict to pay N2 million fine

Woman Delivers Baby With Two Heads In Lagos

            Image result for Graphic Content
A new baby delivered on Tuesday at a hospital in Ogudu on the outskirts of Lagos, has left many in shock. It has two heads with oxygen tube strapped on each, a neck, chest, two legs and two hands.

Doctors at Med-In Specialist Hospital, Osogbo Street, Ogugu, Lagos, who took the delivery, said the baby was born around 6:30pm on Tuesday through an elective caesarean section.

The baby's mother, surgeon and nurses entered the theatre prepared to take delivery of a set of twins as indicated by the various scans she underwent in the course of the pregnancy.

But what they saw were two heads sharing a body.

At the hospital yesterday, it was gathered that the baby was resuscitated and transferred to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) for advance care.

According to one of the nurses who was in the delivery room, they had prepared two cots for each of the twins but were shocked when they saw that they were conjoined.

“This is the first time I am seeing anything like this. I have watched it in movies but seeing it in real life was such an experience for me. Thankfully, the surgeon ensured that the baby survived.
“As I speak to you, the mother doesn’t know the condition of the babies. She still believes and expects to carry her twins. We haven’t told her yet. Only her husband was brought into the theatre to see his child(ren) and he was the one who went with the doctors to LUTH,” said the nurse.

In medical parlance, the condition is known as Parapagus. It is a rare form of partial twinning where there are two heads and two necks side by side on one torso. Such cases are rampant in India.

Doctors say they cannot be separated since they have only one pair of arms and one pair of legs and one heart. This disorder is different from conjoined twins as the baby has only one set of internal organs. The extremely rare case is thought to be brought on during the early stages of pregnancy as a result of genetic mutation.

Med-In Hospital Manager, Mr Dare Moses told The Nation that the baby was taken to LUTH so that tests can be conducted to ascertain if they share also vital organs like hearts and lungs.

He said: “There is need to find out if they share major organs together. They may have to be flown abroad for separation if they have separate hearts and other vital organs. It is possible for them to survive. I have seen cases of twins like this in movie surviving and living normal lives.

“Normally, when we have cases of pregnant woman expecting twins, we usually go for elective caesarean, which was what the mother opted for.

“But when the doctor was trying to extract one of the babies (first one), it got stuck and when he examined further, he discovered that there were two heads in one body. We are happy that the baby was delivered alive and placed on oxygen. Both heads were alive.

“It was really amazing. I am proud and thankful that we delivered the baby alive. Yes, several scans were done by the mother in the course of pregnancy at different places, but none discovered any abnormality. We are thankful that the operation was successful.”

According to a doctor, who refused to be named, the babies were meant to come as identical twins and must have shared the same sac and placenta.

She said: “Nobody can specifically say the reason for the condition. At different stages during pregnancies twins divide but these ones didn’t divide fully. We can’t really say if they have only two pairs of legs and hands, there’s a possibility the other pairs are inside. We don’t know yet.

“There are so many things we can’t really determine physically. That’s why several scans would be conducted, including CT Scans, to know their exact condition and the best option.

“It is a situation that would be best managed abroad as it requires the putting together of a team of paediatric surgeons who must have the best facilities, which we do not have presently on Nigeria."

“We have good doctors but the materials are not there."
