EFCC Uncover N632.2 million in judge’s account

The EFCC has made a startling discovery about former Enugu State Chief Judge Innocent Azubuike Umezulike.

 Detectives found N632.2 million in his bank account, reinforcing the reason for his involuntary retirement.
The agency also found that the lodgements came from lawyers, businessmen, politicians and litigants.

According to The Nation newspaper, Justice Umezulike was believed to have operated the account without a Bank Verification Number (BVN).

The former Chief Judge has been invited for interrogation on January 17 on some of the “shocking” 
lodgments.

The NJC on September 29, 2016 recommended Justice Umezulike for compulsory retirement alongside Justice Mohammed Tsamiya, who was the Presiding Justice of the Ilorin Division of the Court of Appeal

Justice Kabiru Auta of Kano State High Court was recommended for dismissal.

The NJC said it recommended Umezulike to Governor Justice Lawrence Ugwuanyi of Enugu State for compulsory retirement for “delivering judgment in a case 126 days after final addresses were adopted by parties, and for other instances of abuse of office”.

The council also found Justice Umezulike guilty of allegedly “receiving a donation of N10m from a businessman, Prince Arthur Eze, during his book launch while two cases in which Eze was said to have had “vested interest”, were in the judge’s court.”

Wine Factories Producing Fake Amarula, Others, Busted By NAFDAC

The National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), arrested 9 suspects in connecting with "fake" wine and beverage manufacturing factories at Relief Market, Onitsha.

This followed a special raid and enforcement operation of Federal Government’s ban on imported fruit juices on Wednesday in Onitsha.

NAFDAC Head, Investigation and Enforcement, Kingsley Ejiofor, said those nabbed were involved in the bottling of unwholesome, counterfeit and dangerous drinks. His words:

“We came here for a special assignment to mop up all counterfeit and prohibited products which include imported fruit juices, food, drugs, medical devices, cosmetics, detergent and bottled water, among others. 

“We were able to uncover illegal manufacturers of bottle, unwholesome and dangerous chemicals, they call wine and spirits. It was so disheartening.”

Mr. Ejiofor said that popular brands of beverages like Hennessey, 501, Johnny Walker, Red Label whisky, Best Marula fruit cream, Pure heaven, Amarula, Baron De Vals, Eva and J&W, among others were being faked.

According to him, the beverages were being produced in unhygienic factories with cockroaches.

He listed items found in the factories to include;

stoves, colourants, plastic containers, cups, labels, corks, unidentified chemicals and recycled bottles.

“In one of the shops, the smell was so pungent that we could not even recover the materials and had to destroy them right there. This is why we find the incidences of cancer to be high in this country because we don’t know what we drink.

“I will like to use this medium to tell people to destroy cups, plastics or bottles after use because not doing so encourages these illegal producers,” Mr. Ejiofor said.

He further advised retailers and consumers to issue and collect receipts for every product purchased to enable tracking.

Ejiofor said the arrested suspects, five men and four ladies, would be interrogated and prosecuted. The recovered items, especially the chemicals would be taken to NAFDAC laboratory for analysis.

Super Eagles captain and former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has explained his recent move to the Chinese Premier League to team up with Tianjin Teda.
He said the move was primarily done to aid Nigeria’s push to be at the 2018 World Cup in Brazil.

Mikel was frozen out of the first team picture by coach of Chelsea Antonio Conte, but the captain of the Nigeria team remained  a  regular  for the national team despite his lack of games at club level.


He decided to move to Tianjin Teda on a three year deal in order to get playing time, and despite the fact that he will be getting double his former pay in China, the 29 year old insist the move wasn’t all about money.

Student Shot Dead by Gunmen While Coming Out of A Bank

Yemi Akinbamiwa, a 300 level student of Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba (AAU), in Ondo state, was reportedly shot dead by suspected armed robbers along Akure road on Monday.

According to reports, Yemi had gone to the bank to make a huge withdrawal from a bank that he placed it inside a black nylon bag. 

As he stepped out of the bank, two men on a motorcycle, accosted him and ordered him to give them the nylon bag. He reportedly refused to and he was immediately gunned down and the bag snatched from him, in broad daylight. 

Policemen later arrived the scene of the incident and took his remains to the morgue.

Three Killed, Many Injured As Cult Boys Clash In Lagos

No fewer than three persons have been confirmed dead, while several others were injured in two separate clashes between rival cults in Lagos.
The two incidents occurred on Olorunfunmi Street, Oworonshoki; and Muri Ojora Street, Amukoko.
It was learnt that one Bayo Morebise, aged 37, was killed in the Oworonshoki clash, while 28-year-old Lekan Makinde and one other, identified as Area, were hacked to death in Amukoko.
In the Amukoko clash, which happened around 4pm on Sunday, it was gathered that one Emmanuel, said to be a member of a rival cult to Makinde’s gang, went into a coma and was taken to a hospital in the community.
A resident of Amukoko, who spoke with Punch on condition of anonymity for fear of attack, said many people were injured while scampering to safety.
He said, “It all started with a scuffle between two boys on the street, who belonged to rival cults. About 30 minutes after they were separated, members of the two factions – Eiye Confraternity and Aiye Confratenity – mobilised and started chasing one another with cutlasses. People fell and got injured while trying to run to safety.
“The chaos stopped after policemen from the Amukoko division arrived at the scene. Three persons were hacked. Two of them, Lekan (Makinde) and one boy called Area, died from the injuries they sustained. One other boy (Emmanuel) was rushed to a hospital for treatment. Around 10pm, they regrouped and clashed again.”
Another resident, who gave his name only as Tomi, told Punch that the peace of the community had been under threat as a result of clashes, calling on security agencies to go after the hoodlums.

“This community is volatile and hoodlums foment trouble at will. They are jobless and not ready to work. When responsible persons are engaged in the day, you will find them hanging around, smoking. It is when we are relaxing outside in the evening that they will start their trouble. The two deaths recorded on Saturday were just one of many atrocities they had perpetrated.

“Once these miscreants are arrested, they should be made to face the law to serve as a deterrent to others. Something has to be done to curb the attacks. Besides, these people live around children, who can easily be influenced negatively,” Tomi said.

In the Oworonshoki incident, which occurred on Saturday, it was learnt that operatives attached to the anti-crime patrol team of the Oworonshoki Police Station were mobilised to the scene after receiving a distress call.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, confirmed Morebise’s killing, saying the case was under investigation.

Why I Was Removed As Senate Leader – Senator Ali Ndume

Senator Ali Ndume from Borno State, who was removed as Senate Majority Leader on Tuesday, has revealed why he was ousted.
The president of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, announced Senator Ndume’s removal shortly before the upper legislative chamber adjourned on Tuesday.

Saraki read a letter from the All Progressives Congress caucus asking for leadership change.

Surprisingly, Senator Ndume had stepped out of the senate chamber to observe his early afternoon prayer when Saraki read the letter.

The APC caucus, Saraki said, also chose Senator Ahmed Lawan to replace Ndume.

Lawan was until his new role the chairman of Senate committee on Defence, a position he assumed after losing the June 2015 senate presidency battle to Saraki.

Speaking exclusively with Premium Times hours after his removal, Ndume said he was removed for insisting that the Senate did not follow the proper procedure before declaring that it had rejected the nomination of Ibrahim Magu as head of the EFCC.

Mr. Ndume said he insisted that in view of the Senate’s standard procedures and practice, Mr. Magu had not been rejected by the Senate because there was no confirmation hearing for the nominee to defend claims made against him.

“What I said was that for us (Senate) to claim to have rejected a nominee sent to us by the president, we have to follow the right procedure, and observe our rules,” the senator said.

“The nominee should have been called into the chamber and presented before senators who will then openly vote on whether to accept or reject his or her nomination.

“In the case of Magu, that was not done. We only had a closed-door session and when we emerged the Senate spokesperson claimed that he had been rejected. I had to set the record straight by saying we never rejected the nominee. This is because you don’t accept or reject a nominee at a closed session. Our votes and proceedings are there as evidence of my claims.”

Mr. Ndume said the clarification he made unsettled some of his colleagues, who immediately began to plot against him.

“I was surprised that such a simple and harmless clarification could rattle and anger some of my colleagues,” he said. "I thought it wasn’t a big deal to disagree over issues. I didn’t realise that that simple matter would snowball into a plot to remove me.

“The other day, somebody mentioned to me that Senate President had commissioned Dino Melaye to collect signatures to remove me. I didn’t pay much attention to the information because I actually thought it was a joke or a rumour.

“I didn’t feel that disagreeing with colleagues, and sharing my understanding of what transpired at our closed session was an offence, grievous enough to cause my removal.”

Conjoined twins with single body, separate heads die

Conjoined twins born in Mexico who made international headlines yesterday have tragically passed away before any treatment could be conducted.
Sharing a single body and fitted with tubes, a clip of the newborns was posted on social media by their surprised relatives towards the end of last week. It is believed that they shared all of their major internal organs, but each had their own heads and brains.

Health officials in Mexico have confirmed their death and said that their mother was in a stable condition.

Doctors in the city of Ciudad Juarez were looking at a 'plan going forward' for the babies who local reports claim are both male, when they died.

Birth attendant allegedly steals newborn, gives dead one to nursing mother

Jimoh, a divorcee, and Osin, a 35-year-old spinster, were arrested by policemen from Igbogbo Police Station, in Ikorodu area of Lagos.

A police source told Vanguard that Osin practises her trade at her 4, Kadara Street residence in Oyingbo.

It was gathered that Osin sometime, last year, assisted a 28-year-old woman, identified as Stella, to deliver a baby girl and afterwards, reportedly told the woman that the child died, and reportedly 
showed Stella a dead child.

She then took the new born baby to her father, Jamiu Jimoh, in Ikorodu.

Meanwhile, while being interrogated after her arrest, Osin stated that she found the baby under a bridge near her home at Oyingbo. She said:

 “On November 9, I was walking along the road in Oyingbo and found a baby on the ground. It was a female child, so I took it. That was the mistake I made. I should have gone to report to the police, but because it was a female baby, I liked her. 

“That was how I took the baby home to Oyingbo. But when I saw how everyone was behaving and gossiping, I had to take the baby to my father in Ikorodu. Even when I could not come to Ikorodu from Oyingbo, my father was there to take care of her. 

Not long after I left his place on Sunday, someone called me on phone at night, saying my father had been arrested. I am a hairdresser, but I am also a traditional birth attendant. The baby was not delivered at my place. 

I was not the one that helped the mother of the child deliver the baby. “But when the police heard that I was a traditional birth attendant and asked me if I assisted the baby’s mother during delivery, I said yes. 

But I found the baby under the bridge at Apapa Road in Oyingbo and she has been with me since November.

Her father Jimoh, who resides at 4, Aro Street, Ikorodu, said he is not aware that the baby was stolen. However, he confirmed to Lateef Akinborode, Executive Director, Community Women’s Rights Foundation, CWRF, at Igbogbo, Ikorodu, that the baby was found with him.
He told Akinborode:

“Osin is not the baby’s mother. She was not pregnant. “I do not know the baby’s mother. My daughter has never brought children to me before.”

Caleb University cuts Students Hair at the gate

Caleb University is a private university located in Imota, Lagos. Known for its cleanliness and high academic taste, the school is also said to be very strict about its rules.

The university caused a stir recently after employing stringent measures to ensure students comply with a law that says male students must wear a low hair cut within the campus premises.

According to a student who shared the story, barbers were seen stationed at gate to make sure that all students who came back with grown hair, have their hair cut before entering the school. Lol!

Some on social media are not finding it funny, some went as far as describing Caleb University as a glorified secondary school, with too many rules. But the students know the rules before getting.
