NDLEA Uncovers New Tricks Used By Drug Smugglers

Officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at the Murtala Muhammed Int'l Airport, Lagos, have arrested two suspects for drug trafficking.

The agency also uncovered new tricks by drug trafficking cartels to circumvent security checks.

A suspected drug trafficker, Roland Chukwudi Tochukwu, 37, who was apprehended for importing 2.045kg of heroin from Nairobi, Kenya, was found in possession of a fake travel ticket indicating that he was coming from China.

Another suspect, Maduka Nnemeka Peter, 39, was also caught attempting to export 1.555kg of cocaine to Dubai. Preliminary investigation by NDLEA revealed that Tochukwu deliberately replaced his ticket with a fake one showing that he was coming from China instead of Nairobi.

This was intended to place him on a low risk profile but his expectations were dashed as the heroin concealed inside his luggage was detected during screening of passengers on an Ethiopian Airline flight.

NDLEA commander at the Lagos airport, Ahmadu Garba, while explaining reasons for the falsification of the ticket, said drugs are more expensive in Asia.

“The suspect wanted to distract the attention of officers by presenting himself as coming from China while he actually took off from Nairobi. This is because, it is economically unwise to bring narcotics from China where the price is far higher than here in Nigeria. Heroin weighing 2.045kg was found inside the luggage of Tochukwu while Maduka Nnemeka Peter also concealed 1.555kg of cocaine in his luggage on his way to Dubai on an Etihad flight,” the commander stated.

Tochukwu, a trader in Onitsha and married with three children, said his friend introduced him into drug trafficking.

“This was the plan of my friend who introduced me into drug trafficking. I sell clothes in Onitsha but my business is as good as dead due to the economic recession. My friend that I contacted for financial assistance requested that I bring a bag containing heroin from Nairobi. The fake ticket was the plan of my friend who assured me that I will never be caught,” he stated.

Peter, an automobile parts dealer based in Aba with his wife and two children, said family problem pushed him into drug trafficking.

“I lost goods worth N4 million few years ago and since then my life has been a shadow of itself. I smuggled the drug for the sum of N200, 000 to solve family problem,” he stated.

Ex-Egypt President Hosni Mubarak Freed After Six Years In Detention

Mr Mubarak left a military hospital in southern Cairo and went to his home in the northern suburb of Heliopolis, his lawyer said.

He was ordered freed earlier this month after Egypt's top appeals court cleared him over the deaths of protesters in the 2011 uprising. Mr Mubarak, 88, became president in 1981 after Anwar Sadat's assassination.

Mr Mubarak had been at Maadi Military Hospital since 2013, when he was transferred there on bail from Torah prison. He was sentenced to life in prison after being convicted in 2012 of complicity in the killing of protesters who died at the hands of security forces in February, 2011.
Another trial was held and a judge decreed in May 2015 that Mr Mubarak could be released from detention.

However, the government of President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi was reportedly reluctant to free him because of the public backlash that might accompany such a move.

Mr Sisi served as Mr Mubarak's military intelligence chief and led the military's overthrow of his democratically elected successor, Mohammed Morsi, in 2013.

In all, more than 800 people are believed to have been killed as security forces clashed with protesters in Cairo, Alexandria, Suez and other cities around Egypt during the 18-day uprising that forced Mr Mubarak to resign.

Reason Kemi Olunloyo's bail hearing was Postponed

The absence of a magistrate, Alatuwo Fubara, at the Port Harcourt Magistrate’s Court on Thursday stalled the hearing on bail application of a blogger, Kemi Olunloyo, and a Port Harcourt-based publisher, Samuel Walson.

Olunloyo, the daughter of a former Governor of Oyo State, Omololu Olunloyo, and Walson were arrested for allegedly publishing materials believed to have defamed a frontline cleric, Pastor David Ibiyeomie, of the Salvation Ministries in Port Harcourt.
According to Punch, though they were expected to appear in court in the morning, it was gathered that the absence of Fubara, who was expected to preside over the matter caused them to stay back in prison.

The magistrate was said to be unable to come to the court as a result of ill health.
While the duo’s lawyers and counsel for Salvation Ministries were present at the court, majority of those at the magistrate court were journalists and bloggers, who came to cover the hearing and also showed solidarity with their colleagues.

Olunloyo was arrested in Lagos, while Walson was apprehended in Port Harcourt. They were remanded in the Port Harcourt Prison.

Some of their friends told journalists that the suspects were currently having health challenges.

The court, however, fixed March 30, 2017, for hearing on the bail application of the journalists.

Speaker’s House Collapses, 20 Escape Death

About 20 construction workers escaped death on Thursday when a building believed to be owned by the Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Edward Ubosi, collapsed.

The 2-storey building, which was still under construction, is located on an estate around Nkpokiti junction at Independence Layout, Enugu.

The building was one of the houses on an estate said to be allocated to the members of the Enugu State House of Assembly.

Some of the construction workers, who were working at the site, sustained injuries.

However, no life was lost in the incident.

A source in the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority, said the agency had, in August 2016, given an order for work to stop in all the buildings on the estate.

The source expressed regrets that the order was flouted by a big man, the state's assembly Speaker.

Traditional Chief Suspended For Allegedly Raping Minor

The Katsina Emirate Council has suspended Bishir Bala Kofar-bai from his post of ‘Magatakarda’ pending the determination of a criminal litigation against him.

The Secretary of the council, Bello Ifo, said in a statement on Thursday that the suspension was with immediate effect.

Kofar-bai was standing trial for an alleged rape of a 15-year-old girl in Katsina two weeks ago.

The traditional title holder was alleged to have raped the victim when she was sent to his house by her father, who was one of his servants.
The victim informed her parents who took her to the hospital for medical treatment.

The parents reported the matter to police, which led to the arrest and detention of the suspect for investigations.

The Coalition of Civil Society Organisations in the state has been mounting pressure on the police to ensure justice in the matter.

Family of doctor who jumped into lagoon chases away journalists and sympathizers

It has been alleged that the  family of late Dr. Orji Allwell Chiawolamoke, who jumped into the Lagoon on Sunday from the Third Mainland Bridge while on his way back from church, yesterday chased sympathisers and journalists away from their Abule-Ijesha home at Somolu area of Lagos State. This came as the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba, established a Suicide Prevention Service Centre. About noon, Orji’s elder brother arrived and rushed into the apartment.

A few minutes later, he ordered all the sympathisers, journalists and church members to leave. Orji’s elder brother, who was visibly angry, marched everybody to the gate and thereafter shut it. He warned journalists, who besieged their house to leave as the death of their brother was a complex one. He said: “We don’t want to see
family members, journalists and neighbours. We are mourning our brother; we need privacy to sort out something. We didn’t invite journalists.”

This was confirmed by an emergency response team member, who craved anonymity. He said: “The last time I called the family, one of them reigned courses on me until I informed him that I was not a journalist but an emergency officer.”

It was observed that those who came to sympathise with Orji’s mother didn’t stay long before taking their leave. Once they stepped out, the gate would be slammed, to prevent people from entering. Efforts to get the burial plans proved abortive as none of the members was ready to comment on the issue. It was learnt that family members were angry with the way the media carried their tragic story.

A source said that Orji’s relatives were angry that what was seen as the most tragic incident in the family was blown out of proportion and celebrated by the media. Meanwhile, emergency responders told our correspondent that construction workers in a Japanese firm discovered the body floating on the water.

One of them, who claimed to have received a text message via the Lagos State Environment and Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU), an agency responsible for picking up of bodies on the road or disaster victims, said the doctor’s body was found about 3:48 p.m. on Wednesday.

The source said: “Immediately the construction workers sighted the body, they informed their Japanese bosses who then tied it to one of the vessels to prevent it from floating to other area owing to tidal waves movement. That was when they alerted the Marine Police, SEHMU, Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and other emergency responders.

“When they arrived, they moved the body to the Marine Police Headquarters at Awolowo Road, before the state Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, was informed. The family members were invited and they confirmed that the body was Orji’s.”

When the New Telegraph visited the hospital yesterday, there was no sign of a condolence register opened in honour of the doctor. Also, no photograph of Orji was hung inside or outside the hospital, to indicate the tragic loss. Rather, normal hospital operations went on as usual. Patients were in the patients’ waiting area.
One after the other, they were ushered into the doctor’s office for consultation and treatment. The hospital environment was serene as normal day-to-day activities went on throughout the two hours that our correspondent spent there.

Kids Whose Mum Died In Accident Reunite With Family

The two kids abandoned at the Ijebu Ode General Hospital, Ogun State, after their mother died in a crash have reunited with family members.

The children, aged eight and two, and their mother had boarded a bus from Ijebu Ode on March 12 en route to Ibadan, Oyo State, when the bus had a head-on collision with another vehicle along Ijebu Ode-Ibadan Road, leading to the death of their mum but the children survived.

A Good Samaritan was said to have rescued the kids from a nearby river.

A source at the hospital told Punch on Thursday that the children’s family members had shown up.

The source said, “The father and relatives of the kids came on Tuesday with the police. He went to the mortuary and identified his late wife. The Ogun State Ministry of Women Affairs has picked up the children for handing over to the family.”

The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Ambibola Oyeyemi, said the children would be handed over to the family on Friday (today).

London terror attack suspect identified as Khalid Masood

The attacker who murdered three people and injured many others before he was shot dead by the police in yesterday's London attack has been identified as Khalid Masood.

It has been confirmed that he was born in the UK and was in his mid 50s. It is strongly believed that he is inspired by Islamic extremism.
Yesterday, Mr Masood drove along Westminster Bridge yesterday afternoon killing a mother-of-two and a man in his mid-50s and injuring another 29 people, some of them critically. "What I can confirm is that the man was British-born and that some years ago he was once investigated by MI5 in relation to concerns about violent extremism. He was a peripheral figure. The case is historic. He was not part of the current intelligence picture. There was no prior intelligence of his intent or of the plot." She said

Ogun To Treat Wife Beaters As Criminals – Amosun

The Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has said men who are fond of battering their wives in the state will henceforth be treated as criminals and will face prosecution.

He said this on Wednesday at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta, after an advocacy walk against gender-based violence, organised by Women Arise in conjunction with the state government.

The governor noted that women play a major role in nation building by nurturing their children, and taking care of the homefront, arguing that any form of violence against women was violence against humanity.

Amosun said anyone who violated the rights of women was a criminal and must be prosecuted adding that the state would no longer tolerate such despicable act.

He said, “Anyone that violates the rights of women is a criminal, he must be prosecuted. We will not tolerate violence against women.

“We say capital no to rape, women battery, assault, child abuse and kidnapping of women. Everyday we are witnessing domestic violence against women; women being beaten to a state of coma. This is not right.

“Women are our wives, they are our daughters and mothers, we must take care of them. When the home is okay, the local government will be okay, when this is okay, state will be okay and the nation will be okay.

“Thank God our lawmakers are here, they will expedite action on the bill on violence against women. As a government, we will support initiative like this, when there is no violence of any form in the state, investors will come.”

The wife of the governor, Mrs. Olufunso Amosun, earlier in her remark, described women as nation builders and must be protected from abuse and violence.

The convener of the advocacy walk, Dr Okei-Odumakin, said the walk was to create awareness on violence against women such as rape, battery, domestic violence,  assault and other forms of abuses.

She said one out of three women in Nigeria suffered abuse and said no fewer than five deaths were recorded in Lagos last year from violence against women.

Ex-Congo VP Bemba To Be Sentenced For Bribing

Former Congolese vice president Jean-Pierre Bemba and four associates will be sentenced Wednesday for bribing witnesses during his war crimes trial, in the first such case before the International Criminal Court.

Hoping it will serve as a deterrent, prosecutors have asked for an eight-year sentence against Bemba, already serving an 18 year-term behind bars for crimes committed by his marauding troops in the Central African Republic in 2002 to 2003.

"The type of sentence, whether heavy or light, will send a clear message about the gravity of the crime," said Mariana Pena, from the Open Society Justice Initiative, an international law advocacy group.
Prosecutors have recommended that Bemba, 54, be handed a new jail term "consecutive to his sentence in the main case."

They also asked judges to sentence Bemba's lawyer Aime Kilolo to eight years, his legal case manager Jean-Jacques Mangenda to seven, Narcisse Arido, a defence witness, to five years and Congolese lawmaker Fidele Babala to three.

The feared former rebel leader and his four associates were found guilty in October of bribing witnesses in what judges at the world war crimes court described as "clear and downright criminal behaviour".

The bribery verdict was the first of its kind in the ICC's history, and the charges were brought after a tip-off to the prosecutor's office.

Handing down their verdict, the judges said Bemba had tried to skew his main trial and had "planned, authorised, and approved the illicit coaching" of the witnesses.

Prosecutors said Bemba masterminded a network to bribe and manipulate at least 14 defence witnesses, persuading them to lie.

Set up in 2002 to prosecute the world's worst crimes, the ICC goes to great lengths to try to protect witnesses and its trials from any interference.

Live Wire Electrocutes Three Siblings In Delta

There was tears and wailing in Eku, in the Ethiope East area of Delta State after three children of a woman, identified as Ms Elohor Gabriel, were electrocuted on Saturday, following a power surge in the community.

It was learnt that the children were electrocuted when the covering of the cable connecting power to their apartment burnt, and the live wire came in contact with some burglar-proof bars while the children were playing at the veranda of the house they lived in.

The deceased were identified as Blessed Adam,6; Elizabeth Adam, 9; and John Oluwadare, 15.

It was gathered that they were the only ones at home when the incident occurred.

A source said, “We ran into our houses when we noticed the spark. When we came outside, we noticed that the children had been electrocuted while holding the burglar-proof bars covering the veranda of the house.

“We noticed that the wire connecting electricity to the house which passed through the burglary-proof bars, had been burnt, exposing it to the bars. The children touched some of the bars and were electrocuted.”

Mother of the children, Elohor, who is in her late 30s, said that she had yet to come to terms with the fact that her three children had gone.

The grieving mother said, “I was not at home when the incident happened and before I got to the hospital, where my neighbours had rushed them to, they were already gone.

“I went out to buy them bread and when I returned, I saw people in the house, who told me what happened. I saw their lifeless bodies at the hospital.”

Rainstorm kills pregnant woman, destroys churches and other property

Several residents of the Agbado-Oke Odo Local Council Development Area of Lagos have been rendered homeless after their houses were damaged by a rainstorm on Monday.

No fewer than 100 houses and 13 churches were destroyed by the rainstorm. Schools, shops, filling stations, fences, electric poles and trees were damaged by the storm, which residents said lasted for about one hour.
Sadly, after the dust had settled, a seven-month pregnant woman, identified only as Basirat, was found dead inside a church.

The communities were still counting their losses when a Punch man visited the area on Tuesday.

It was gathered that the affected communities included Peace Estate, Ikola-Eleyin, Ikola-Odunsi, Liberty Estate, Ikola-Powerline and Oke-Ishagun, among others.

Each has several community development associations and consisted of no fewer than 10 streets.

Some residents were observed repairing their buildings, while those whose houses were levelled sat beside the rubble.

The roofs of houses and schools blown off by the storm littered the roads.

Basirat, who was said to be about 27 years old, was reportedly asleep inside a canopy-covered orthodox church when the rainstorm blew the church away.

A woman, whose house was beside the church, explained that the victim had attempted to escape when she was hit by a thunderbolt.

She said, “Basirat came to observe Igbele (spiritual confinement) in the church. She had several miscarriages and stillbirths and that was why she was brought to the church. When the rainstorm started, it blew off the church’s canopy. The woman, who was aroused from sleep, stood up to flee, but was struck down by a thunderbolt. She fell on her stomach and died.”

The resident took Punch to her house, which collapsed and the roof blown off. It was observed that appliances in the house were burnt, including sockets and cables.

She said there was no electricity at the time of the storm, and that her generator was also not on. So what led to the fire? No one could tell.

Also, a couple, Mr. and Mrs. Fatai, who lived in Ikola-Powerline, lamented that they and their three children had been rendered homeless. Their house was levelled by the rainstorm.

After Killing Her Husband Landlord Accused Of Substituting Murder Weapon

The case of an Ibadan female lawyer, Yewande Oyediran, who was alleged to have murdered her husband, Lowo Oyewande, on February 2, 2016, at their Ibadan residence, took a new twist on Tuesday when a defence witness said one of the prosecution witnesses, who was the landlord of the couple, admitted to him in private that he substituted the weapon used in the killing.

When the case came up at Oyo State High Court, the defence witness, Mr. Kayode Oloyede, who said he's a farmer, told the court that the landlord, Chief Adelodun Akinpelu, also disclosed to him that the murder was the second killing that had taken place in the house.

At the beginning of his testimony, Mr. Oloyede told the court that Akinpelu’s claim that he did not know one Michael Ogunlana, was not true, saying that Ogunlana was his (Oloyede) relative.

Oloyede said, “I had a meeting with my younger brother, Michael Lana (Ogunlana), sometime in October 2016, and during the meeting, there were persistent calls to his mobile phone from a certain number. I asked my brother to pick the call and it turned out to be Chief Akinpelu who told him to come over to his house at the Idi-Odan area of Ibadan. I went to his place with my brother and another man called Kanbi.

“Chief Akinpelu invited us to his residence while he told Kanbi to wait for us at his wife’s shop, because according to him, we were going to discuss a very important family issue.

“Chief Akinpelu later told Michael (Ogunlana) that he needed his advice over the murder case involving Yewande, who had been charged with murdering her husband. When Michael asked him what his concern with the matter was, he answered that the couple were his tenants and that the late victim fell and died at his doorsteps.

“He told us that when the late Lowo collapsed, he changed the knife that was used to stab his neck and that when the police came to the crime scene, he gave them a different knife, which he took from his house.

“Michael (Ogunlana) scolded him for tampering with evidence and that he ought to have left the knife and allowed the police to find it at the crime scene. He told my brother (Ogunlana) that he didn’t want to be a witness in court in the case and Michael advised him to tell his lawyer that he was insolvent and wouldn’t be able to pay his way to the court.”

Lowo’s family counsel, Mr. Abayomi Alliyu, objected to the account of the witness which he referred to as “hearsay.”

Presiding Justice Munta Abimbola overruled him and said the rules of admissibility supported the accounts of the witness because he recounted an event that happened in his presence.
