Herdsmen Carry Arms, Storm Taraba Assembly, To Stop Grazing Prohibition Bil

Members of Taraba State chapter of Miyeti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, clad with arms, yesterday, took its protest against the state’s Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranchers Establishment Bill 2017 to the House of Assembly, threatening breakdown of law if the bill is passed.

The anti-open grazing bill was sponsored as an executive bill to the state House of Assembly by Governor Darius Ishaku about a month ago. The speech of the state’s Chairman of Miyeti Allah, Sahabi Tukur, was read by Alhaji Adamu Azo at the gate of the Taraba State House of Assembly before the Speaker, Peter Diah, and other members of House.

The association described the bill as a move targeted to subdue the Fulani tribe and also to undermine and restrict activities of the Fulani tribe in the state. The group called on the lawmakers to stop the bill in the collective interest of the people of the state. It also threatened that there would be a breakdown of law and order, should the House pass the bill into law.

SPEAKER REACTS

While addressing newsmen, the Speaker, Diah, condemned the threats by the Chairman of Miyeti Allah, noting that the association was protesting in ignorance since the issues raised during the protest were accommodated within the proposed bill.

He said the committee set up by the House of Assembly to handle the process of the bill had given three weeks within which to conduct public hearing on the bill before passage, where all issues that appear unclear will be addressed.

He called on Miyeti Allah to compile all areas they are not comfortable with as a memorandum for the public hearing, stressing that the Assembly had given room for groups and individuals to attend the public hearing with their lawyers.

He described the protest as a deliberate move by Miyeti Allah to cause public disorder in the state capital, as the group did not follow due process, which was the reason security did not allow them access into the assembly complex.

He said: “How can you mobilise for protest and you allow your members to carry arms? The Assembly is an organised place and the security will not allow disorder.

“I think that was why they were not allowed access into the complex, but as a leader who was elected by the people, I insisted I will attend to them, even in the midst of their weapons.

Prisoner Who Murdered His Own Mum & Her Friend Killed By Inmates

Two inmates have been charged with murder following the death of a fellow prisoner who was jailed for killing his own mum and her friend.

Police launched a murder investigation after Brett Rogers was found dead in his cell at a maximum security prison.

He was serving a life sentence with a minimum term of 32 years after being found guilty by a jury last year.

The 25-year-old was found laughing and covered in blood when police arrived at the grisly scene of the double killing at his mum's home in 2015.

Rogers was named last night after being found dead in his prison cell at HMP Long Lartin in Evesham, Worcestershire, at around 6pm on June 7.

Two inmates have been charged with murder and are due to appear before Worcester Crown Court today.

Rogers was convicted in the brutal murder of his mum Gillian Phillips, 54, and her friend David Oakes, 60, in Stansted, Essex, on July 22, 2015.

Chelmsford Crown Court heard how he called police after the murders at his mum's home and was found at the scene.

Mrs Phillips had died of multiple knife wounds, while Mr Oakes suffered a head injury and stab wounds.

Rogers claimed the pair were attacked by a mystery stranger while he went out to the supermarket for five minutes.

Jurors were told Mr Oakes had undergone treatment for cancer before his death.

He was stamped on while he was on the ground and had cuts on his hands and knuckles where he had tried to defend himself. He died the next day.

The court heard Rogers was on licence at the time of the killings, after leaving his father with a broken eye socket in 2012.

Sun Newspapers Reacts As EFCC Operatives Raid Office

Law-abiding staff of The Sun Publishing Limited resumed work yesterday morning to behold heavily armed EFCC operatives in our company. They claimed to have “orders from above” to seal up the premises of The Sun Publishing Limited.

At gunpoint, they ordered our security personnel to take them round the company premises, after which they proceeded to prevent staff from either entering or leaving the premises, and disrupted our circulation process.

For one gruelling hour, EFCC operatives subjected our staff to crude intimidation, psychological and emotional trauma, even as some of the men accused our organisation of publishing pro-Biafra, Boko Haram and Niger Delta militant stories, as they surveyed our premises.

We recall that in 2007 (10 years ago) the EFCC had obtained an interim forfeiture order in respect of some assets of The Sun, attached to a suit against our Publisher, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, for which we have filed an appeal, which is still pending in court.

We recall that in 2007, (10 years ago) the EFCC had obtained an interim forfeiture order in respect of some assets of The Sun, attached to a suit against our Publisher, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, for which we have filed an appeal, which is still pending in court.

We also recall that the Acting Chairman of the EFCC, Mr. Ibrahim Magu had written a letter personally signed by him dated 23rd of May and received on the 7th of June, asking The Sun management to report to the Commission on 5th of June, detailing our operations in the last 10 years, on account of an interim order of forfeiture under appeal

As  law abiding corporate citizen, our lawyer, Chief Chris Uche SAN, wrote the Commission to intimate the Agency that the issue was pending before the court of Appeal. The receipt of our correspondence was duly acknowledged.

We were therefore shocked that our premises would be invaded by the Commission under whatever guise. This is condemnable and reprehensible. No one, Agency or authority should be above the laws of our country. An abuse of the law is a recipe for chaos.

Magu had in an earlier letter threatened to sue The Sun over a report published by one of our titles, pertaining to a report on investigation of a property allegedly traced to his wife. But up till now, we are yet to receive any court process.

In the light of the above, we strongly view this onslaught against The Sun as a personal vendetta by the leadership of the Commission, and by extension a declaration of war against the media.

In this invasion of our premises, it is crystal clear that what Magu and his Commission are after is not only to intimidate and muzzle us, but a furious attempt to call a dog a bad name in order to hang it.

On the issue of the interim order, which he purportedly based his invasion, Magu knows the matter has been on appeal since 2007 for which hearing comes up this week. But rather than wait for the court process, thecCommission under the leadership of Magu, typically resorted to self help.

We want the general public to take note of this  authoritarianism and high handedness, which  has been the hallmark of Magu’s leadership of the EFCC.

The other charge of publishing Biafra, Boko Haram and Niger Delta militant stories is very ridiculous, baseless and anti-Press freedom.

We like to state that we are neither an ethnic, political nor religious newspaper, but we are the Voice of the Nation, reflecting all sides, all views and all shades of opinion in line with the ethics of our profession.

We challenge Magu and his Commission to show where The Sun’s stories have been different from other papers in the country.

We call on well-meaning citizens and relevant authorities to restrain Magu and his Commission from taking the laws into their hands

NBA To Sue Police, Zenith Bank For Abandoning Family Of Slain Police Officer

The Owerri branch of Nigerian Bar Association on Monday said that it would sue the Nigeria Police Force and Zenith Bank for allegedly abandoning the family of heroic Police Sergeant, Chukwudi Iboko, who died during the February 22, 2017, robbery which took place at the Wetheral Road branch of Zenith bank in Owerri, the Imo State capital.

Sergeant Iboko, who killed one of the four armed robbers in the attack, suffered severe gunshot injuries and died the next day in a police clinic in Owerri after he was allegedly rejected at the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri.

He had been praised by many Nigerians, leading to a massive campaign for raising fund by the Punch Newspaper and some social media activists for his family’s upkeep and to put his children back to school.

Irked by the victim’s wife’s claim that both the Police and the Bank had abandoned her and her seven surviving children which was published in Sunday PUNCH, the Owerri Branch NBA Chairman, Lawrence Nwakaeti, said that it was a wicked act for the police and the Bank to have abandoned and neglected Iboko’s family.

The legal practitioner said that his branch would have no option than to sue the police and bank to compel them to take full responsibility of the family of an officer who died in an active service while protecting the assets and customers of the Zenith Bank on the day of the incident.

Nwakeati said, “It is the height of wickedness for the gallant policeman who died in the course of duty to be abandoned by the police which he served most meritoriously and gave his life as a result and the bank for whom he paid the Supreme price, to abandon the young family he left behind.

“We demand that both the Nigeria Police Force as well as Zenith should take urgent steps towards the upkeep of the family left behind by the deceased police officer”.

The Chairman said that the children of the hero police officer who had dropped out of school must be assisted by the police and the bank to return to and to assist his young widow.

“The children he left behind who have dropped out of school must be assisted to return back to school. Their dreams must not be allowed to die just like that. It’s unfair. What message are we sending to our men and women in uniform who daily put their lives on the line so that others may be safe?

“We owe those they leave behind a duty of care in the event of the unthinkable happening to them”

According to him, “We hereby demand that the family of this fallen officer be made to feel less the death of their breadwinner”.

Nwakaeti said that In the event that nothing happens in spite of the demand, the Association shall take up the issue and ensure that Justice comes the way of the grieving family.

106 Lawyers Defend Saraki At CCT As Trial Continues

There were 106 lawyers in the defense team of Senate President Bukola Saraki yesterday, as the false asset declaration case against Mr. Saraki came up for hearing at the Code of Conduct Tribunal, Premium Times reports.
The tribunal postponed its ruling on a no-case submission application made by Mr. Saraki.

The tribunal chairman, Danladi Umar, said he would communicate the date for the ruling on the application after considering the submissions of council in their written addresses.

Earlier counsel to Mr. Saraki, Kanu Agabi said the prosecution had failed in establishing a case against his client.

Mr. Agabi, a former Attorney General of the Federation, said the charges against his client were based on petitions written by faceless petitioners.

He added that the reports of the petitions were never made available to the tribunal for verification.

Mr. Agabi said the petitions alluded to by the investigators did not have anything to do with the defendant, adding that the petitioners were never called to testify in court.

Mr. Agabi further argued that the alleged failure to include some assets in the defendant’s declaration form should not be construed as false declaration of assets.

Prosecution counsel, Rotimi Jacobs, however argued that investigation conducted were based on intelligence information. He said the investigation team did not need the petitioners to be present at the trial.

Mr. Jacobs, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, said the defendant had made another declaration after the case began which included the list of assets that were allegedly omitted.

Mary J. Blige Ordered To Pay Ex-Husband $30K A Month In Spousal Support

Mary J. Blige has been ordered to pay her ex-husband, Martin "Kendu" Isaacs! The singer filed for divorce in July 2016 after 13 years of marriage, and although she argued their prenuptial agreement waived any spousal support, she'll still have to shell out some cash.

A judge has now ordered Blige to pay Isaacs $30,000 per month in temporary spousal support as their divorce continues to play out, which will accommodate the "style of living" he was accustomed to while married to her. She was also ordered to pay retroactively, dating back to September as well as account for his attorney fees for a total of $235K.
Though Blige had originally filed not to pay her ex anything, the judge's orders are far less than what Isaacs was originally seeking: $129,319 per month.

Two armed robbers were shot dead yesterday by men of the Ogun State Police Command while robbing a luxury bus along Ijebu Ode-Ore-Benin Expressway.
The robbers had blocked a Port Harcourt- bound bus and dispossessed the passengers of their money and other valuables before they were chased by men of the Anti-Robbery Squad attached to the Ogebere Ijebu Police Division, in the Ijebu East local Government area of the state.

When journalists visited the police division in Ogbere on Thursday, many of the passengers were seen waiting to identify their valuables.

How Two men Were raped by 7 women in Zimbabwe

Two men who were offered lifts by seven women in two separate incidents, were reportedly sexually assaulted by the women according to the Police in Zimbabwe who are already investigating the incident and who advised the public to be vigilant when they are picked by women.
It was gathered that the first victim was held up with a gun, forced into the bush, raped and then drugged, while the other was knocked out by a drink and abused while unconscious.
The Herald reported that Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi said one of the two recent victims, aged 37, was picked up in Harare on May 27 by a car containing one man and two women.
A woman who came aboard at the same time, the policeman said, pointed what seemed to be a pistol at the man after the driver had taken the car on a detour.Chief Supt Nyathi said the woman force-marched the man into the bush, adding that: ‘One of the females forced the complainant to have sexual intercourse with him without his consent, while another female accused forced the complainant to drink an unknown liquid which left the complainant unconscious.’
The other man also boarded a car in Harare, this one containing five unknown people, before being offered a drink by a woman which knocked him unconscious.

Chief Supt Nyathi said: ‘When the complainant gained consciousness he discovered that he had been abused.’
Last year police were on the lookout for four women alleged to have sexually abused a 29-year-old man after offering him a lift in the Zimbabwean capital.
In 2015, another man also aged 29 was allegedly raped at gunpoint after being given a ride from Magunje Growth Point.
