18 passengers killed in Ekiti road crash

Sad reports just reaching us from Ekiti has it that 18 passengers have been killed in a road crash in the state.

No fewer than 18 people died in an early morning road crash in Awo community in Irepodun/Ifelodun LGA of Ekiti State.

The Toyota Hiace bus, said to have been conveying the passengers from Lagos to Abuja, had had a head-on collision with a trailer on Awo – Igede road on Wednesday morning.

The bodies of the passengers were squeezed in the crushed bus, with witnesses claiming that there were no survivors in the accident.

A Danfo driver was allegedly flogged by a soldier, on Sunday, around Ojo barracks in Lagos, for overtaking him.

According to a passenger who reported the incident on social media, the soldier flogged the driver because he overtook his car.

The driver also had his side glass shattered by the military officer. See what the passenger wrote below;

“the driver was assaulted because he overtook the soldier’s car. Unbelievable right? The soldier came down with his hockey stick and shattered the windows, not minding if anyone would get hurt.
The driver was begging him for something he didn’t even do. He stripped him naked and beat him black and blue. Told him he would kill him and ‘nothing go happen’.

For the women who dared speak up, the soldier threatened to go fetch female soldiers from the barracks to come beat them up, the impunity was alarming. Please make this go viral until this soldier is bought to book.“

Nigerians Stage Protest As Ghana Shuts Down Their Businesses

The National Association of Nigerian Traders (NANTS) on Monday protested at the ECOWAS Secretariat in Asokoro, and also at the Ghanaian High Commission Abuja, against alleged discriminative closure of businesses belonging to Nigerians in Ghana.

The protest which started early morning paralyzed activities at the ECOWAS Secretariat and Asokoro area as the protesters marched through the streets.

The protesters, mostly women bear placards with various inscriptions such as ‘We need ECOWAS intervention’, ‘Ghana re-open Nigerians shops now’, ‘ECOWAS, the situation in Ghana is totally unacceptable’, and ‘Ghana wants AFCTA secretariat but clamps on African traders’ among others.


The President of NANTS, Barrister Ken Ukaoha, said that the association is protesting the alleged victimisation of Nigerian businessmen in Ghana.

According to him, the development is so bad that a law was recently passed by the Ghanaian parliament seeking to make the business environment hostile to foreign investors, asking them to have a minimum of $1m capital investment before they can operate businesses in the country.

“Since Ghana is a signatory to the ECOWAS protocol on free movement of goods and services, there is a need for the commission to caution the government of Ghana,” Ukaoha said.

The association gave ECOWAS Commission a one-week ultimatum to intervene and resolve the matter, adding that if nothing was done, the association would deploy all its members to occupy the ECOWAS Secretariat complex and conduct their businesses there.

He said the ECOWAS President, Jean-Claude Brou, had also been petitioned over the development, saying that the development had led to a Nigerian woman trader committing suicide after she was ejected from her shop and her business closed down.

At the Ghanaian High Commission, the Consular Officer, Mr. Eric Duodu, who received the protesters, commended them for their peaceful conducts.

He promised to relate their demands to the Ghanaian government to see how best to resolve the issue.

Wonder bank in Calabar allegedly defrauds customers of N27billion

A wonder bank in Calabar has allegedly defrauded unsuspecting customers to the tune of N27 billion, after the operators bolted with their deposits in Cross River State.

The bank, operating under the name Micheno Multipurpose Cooperative Society, MMCS, reportedly succeeded in defrauding over 13,000 people who trusted them with their money.

The scheme owned and operated by one Michael Eke, had promised depositors of N100,000 an additional N50,000 at the end of 40  days, and those who deposit N150,000 would get N300,000 at the same period, Vanguard reports. A deposit of  N1 million would earn a N500,000 profit at the end of the same period while deposits above N1 million would be calculated in N1 million units.

The scheme berthed in Calabar in June 2018 had been attracting patronage from Cross River state residents. Some of the depositors parted with their life savings and others deposited their gratuities, which run into millions, with the hope of reaping bountifully at the end of 40 days.

However, at the end of the 40 days, some depositors got only a small part of their deposits sent back to them, while over 13,000 others did not get anything and have since not heard from the operators of the bank in the past one month. Their office in Calabar has remained shut since then.

The scheme started as a Swiss marketing company on WhatsApp and in less than one month, the groups grew to about 36 all providing information on the benefits of joining the scheme and attracted a lot of people.

A victim, Edna Nzegu, said:

I have N33 million stocks with the scheme. It may not be much compared to what others have but this has destabilised my life and turned me to mad woman with no bearing and I have lost interest in life and work.

Some of the depositors accused a Calabar-based comedian, MC Mbakara, of conniving with Mr Eke to fleece them of their money by promoting the scheme on his WhatsApp thread and website, which persuaded them to believe that the scheme was genuine and he has since gone into hiding.

Speaking from his hideout,  Mbakara said he was not part of the company even when he was appointed vice president of the scheme by Eke.

He said:

I have been accused of so many things I am not aware of. I am not on the run and not hiding. My phone lines have been open and I am very available.

He added he was only a brand ambassador whose following on and offline was used by Eke to drive an aggressive campaign that brought a lot of depositors to the scheme.

Cross River Police Command spokesperson, Ms Irne Ugbo, said reports had been made by some depositors of the scheme and investigation is ongoing “to unravel what the scheme is about and what actually happened to the depositors’ funds.” 

Nigerian man in Malaysia dies after jumping from building to evade arrest

                

A Nigerian man in Malaysia has lost his life after he jumped from a building while trying to evade arrest from authorities.

According to reports, the deceased who hails from Awkuzu in Anambra State – jumped from a second floor due to lack of papers.

He was rushed to the hospital where he passed away days after, according to an online report.

This is just days after another Nigerian man in Malaysia almost lost his life in similar incident. He was reported to have been pursued by officers before he jumped from a tall building and injured himself in the process.

Michael Kors Buys Italy's Versace Fashion House For $2.12 Billion

                    

Fashion giant, Michael Kors has reportedly reached an agreement with Versace to buy the fashion outfit for $2.1 billion including debt.

Before the acquisition, Michael Kors were down 2 percent in premarket trading on Tuesday, after closing down more than 8 percent Monday when news of the deal leaked. Shares of Tapestry the parent of rival Coach, were down 1.73 percent in premarket trading.

The handbag maker which bought Gianni Versace for $2.1 billion, including debt will change its name to Capri Holdings, inspired by an “iconic, glamorous and luxury destination” island, the company said on Tuesday.

The management of Michael Kors, plans to grow Versace to $2 billion in revenue globally and increase its retail footprint from roughly 200 to 300 stores. It also expects to expand accessories and footwear from 35% to 60% of revenues.

The deal involves retaining Donatella Versace, who has helped run the company since her brother Gianni was murdered in 1997, to oversee the label. Donatella, her brother Santo and daughter Allegra will also stay on as shareholders in the company. Versace’s management team will continue to be led by its CEO, Jonathan Akeroyd.

“We are all very excited to join a group led by [Michael Kors CEO] John Idol, whom I have always admired as a visionary as well as a strong and passionate leader. We believe that being part of this group is essential to Versace’s long-term success,” Donatella said, as part of the company statement on Tuesday.

It was further gathered that this deal marks one of the first times an American company has cracked the code of super high-end luxury fashion, typically controlled by LVMH, the owner of Guerlain and Givenchy, and Kering, the owner of Balenciaga and Yves Saint Laurent. Michael Kors had already dipped its toes in European fashion, last year buying shoe brand Jimmy Choo for $1.2 billion.

Michael Kors has been eyeing the luxury space for quite some time. Both it and competitor Tapestry suffered the repercussions of expanding their affordable luxury brands too widely, thereby diluting their stature in the process.

Arsene Wenger plays football match after retirement

Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger plays football at a charity match in memory of his late old time friend, Aldo Platini.

The match, which was also put on in an effort to raise money for sick children, took place in Nancy on Sunday afternoon

Legendary French midfielder and former UEFA president Michel Platini, son of Aldo, was also in attendance at the game which marked the opening of a stadium carrying the name of his father.

Aldo was the first individual to give Wenger a shot at football management at Nancy in 1984 and the Frenchman did not hesitate to take a chance to show his respect for his late friend.

Wenger finally left his post at the Emirates Stadium in the summer after a tenure spanning two decades, three Premier League title triumphs, seven FA Cups wins and an unbeaten season in 2003-04.

Speaking after the game, in which the former midfielder did not show his age on the wing, Wenger admitted that he is yet to make a decision on his future.

Asked if the footballing world would see him as a manager again, the Frenchman simply replied: ‘I don’t know, I don’t know’.

‘To be honest, for the moment, I have not really thought about that because I fixed myself something whereby in the first few months I would not take any decisions,’ he told local outlet L’Est Republicain
‘So I have not been too worried with that. It is not even going through my head.

Chelsea forward, Eden Hazard has revealed that he voted for Real Madrid midfielder, Luka Modric, to win the Best FIFA Men’s Player award.

Modric won the award ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo and Mohamed Salah.

It’s the first time since 2006 that Barcelona icon Lionel Messi has not been among the candidates for FIFA’s top award, and also the first time someone else won the award outside Messi or Ronaldo.

The nominees were voted for by national team coaches (25%), national team captains (25%), select media representatives (25%) and via an online vote (25%).

Speaking with reporters at the event, Hazard said, “I voted for Luka Modric, but Mo Salah is my friend so I would like him to win.”

Instagram co-founders resign from company

                       

Instagram co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger are leaving the smartphone photo-sharing service bought by Facebook six years ago for a billion dollars, the New York Times reported late Monday citing unnamed sources.

Systrom and Krieger have resigned from their posts as chief executive and chief technology officer respectively, not giving reasons and saying they planned to take time off, according to the Times.

Facebook did not respond to a request for comment.

Instagram in June announced it passed a billion active users, and unveiled a new long-form video feature in a bid to attract “creators” like those on YouTube

It became the fourth Facebook platform to eclipse the billion-user mark, including the namesake social network with more than two billion users, and the messaging applications WhatsApp and Messenger.

Facebook acquired Instagram in April 2012 for a combination of cash and stock worth some $1 billion at the time.

Instagram has been a hit with young internet users, an audience that Facebook is keen to keep in its fold.
