Wizkid stripped of MTV's EMA Best African Act award

The MTV Europe Music Awards has finally stripped off Nigeria’s Wizkid of the Best African Act award and given it to Ali Kiba after days of public outcry from Tanzanians
The award that was subject to a public vote became a subject of discussion after votes showed Ali Kiba was leading but the organisers gave Wizkid the trophy during the ceremony in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

Ali Kiba said he was awaiting communication from the award organisers and on Wednesday, MTV Base East Africa made the announcement.
During a Facebook live chat, Ali Kiba said;

“Sasa ndio nimepata confirmation kwamba ni kweli tuzo inakuja Tanzania na vile vile mimi siwezi kuzungumzia, nitasubiri mpaka nizishike (I’ve just gotten the confirmation that the award is coming back to Tanzania, but I can’t talk much about it, I’m still waiting to receive it),” 

He added that the award organisers got in touch with his management and admitted the mistake clarifying that he was the winner as voted by the public.

Wizkid has since deleted all Instagram posts regarding the award.

President-elect Donald Trump fired back on social media after demonstrators in both red and blue states hit the streets for another round of protests, showing outrage over the Republican's unexpected win.

Demonstrations occurred from Portland, Oregon, to Chicago, to New York and parts in between and each typically drew a few hundred people, less than the thousands that gathered in various protests that surged after it became clear Trump had won Tuesday's election.

Late Thursday night, Trump went on Twitter to take on the protesters. Trump tweets: “Just had a very open and successful presidential election. Now professional protesters, incited by the media, are protesting. Very unfair!”

In Portland Thursday night hundreds of people marched throughout the city as protests turned violent, with people smashing store windows and lighting off firecrackers. Police declared the protests a riot, said there were people with baseball bats in the crowd and told people via loudspeaker to move on.

Oregon Department of Transportation officials closed portions of Interstate 5 and Interstate 84 in the area intermittently as a precaution.

In Denver, protesters managed to shut down Interstate 25 near downtown Denver briefly Thursday night.

Denver police tweeted around 10pm that demonstrators made their way onto the freeway and traffic was halted in the northbound and southbound lanes. Police say the interstate was reopened about half an hour later as the crowd moved back downtown.

Earlier protests in Denver, Boulder and Colorado Springs on Wednesday and Thursday went off peacefully.

Lagosians consume N3bn foodstuffs daily - Ambode

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State says daily consumption of foodstuffs in the state is worth over N3bn.
He added that investors in the agricultural sector had a ready market and returns on their investments.

The governor spoke at the maiden edition of the Lagos Food Security and Exhibition Summit with the theme, ‘Actualising Sustainable Food Security in Lagos State: A New Comprehensive Agenda,’ adding that his administration would maximise Lagos comparative advantage to achieve food security.


He said,

“Nigeria has no business importing foodstuffs to feed its citizens. We must cultivate the land and improve efficiency in the agricultural value chain. 

Our core policy thrust towards achieving food security is to maximise the comparative advantage of the state in agriculture and partner other states.”

Ambode said his administration had partnered the Kebbi State Government for the development of agricultural commodities such as rice, wheat, groundnut and onion, expressing optimism that the partnership would result in the supply of 70 per cent of the total national rice consumption.

“We have also acquired agricultural land in Ogun, Osun and Oyo states, as well as Abuja for rice cultivation and oil palm processing, among others,” the governor said.

He said the summit was organised to bring together stakeholders in the agricultural sector to proffer solutions to the challenges militating against the achievement of food security.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Food Security, Mr. Sanni Okanlawon, said the summit would realign emerging realities with new global trends on food safety, processing and funding for agr0business.

The Chairman of the summit, Alhaji Sani Dangote, said despite the shortage of arable land, the state should leverage on its comparative advantages to feed itself and neighbouring states.

Female Judge, Justice Ofili-Ajumogobia, fail to show properties she claimed her mum gave her

Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia took agents of the EFCC on a wild goose chase as she traveled with them from Lagos to Benin and Asaba in search of properties she claimed her late mother bequeathed to her. However, the search was futile as the judge was unable to show agents the said properties she allegedly inherited from her mother.

An EFCC source said a bus carrying Justice Ofili-Ajumogobia and a team of anti-corruption agents first arrived in Benin City, the capital of Edo State, because the judge had claimed that some of the $900k she wired abroad from bank accounts in Nigeria was income from properties she ostensibly inherited. 

She had told EFCC agents that her brother, Donald Ofili, and a lawyer based in Asaba, the Delta State capital, were managing the said properties. Funny enough, agents who traveled to Benin City to verify the existence of the houses claimed by the embattled judge as the source of some of her income did not find a single property.

According to SR, the female judge who sat in the back of the bus often covered herself with wrapper and muttered into a hand-held device as they drove her to Benin City. 

However, on their arrival in Benin, the judge’s brother reportedly spoke on the phone to EFCC agents, asserting that their mother owned homes in the city, but confessing that his sister had asked him to claim that the $120k he wired into her account came from rental fees. The operatives said that, on discovering that her brother had blown open her game, Justice Ofili-Ajumogobia changed tunes and claimed that a lawyer not known to her brother managed the properties. She also told stunned agents that she could not recollect the addresses of the properties. When agents reminded her that her brother also claimed not to know the addresses of the properties, the judge urged the agents to proceed to Asaba, claiming she would then have enough time to contact the mysterious Benin lawyer.

Upset by the judge’s evasive manner, EFCC agents demanded to speak with the lawyer in advance as they drove to Asaba. Justice Ofili-Ajumogobia reportedly rang the so-called lawyer and handed her phone over to an EFCC agent. The man then promised the EFCC agents that he would be waiting to receive them in Asaba, adding that he was visiting a community outside Asaba.

However, once the EFCC agents arrived in Asaba, the judge told them that the lawyer who reportedly managed her properties had traveled to Owerri. Furious, members of the EFCC team demanded to speak again with the lawyer, but his line had been switched off. They demanded that the judge take them to the properties, but she again said she did not know the address. The irate EFCC operatives spent the night in Asaba, but seized the judge’s phone to ensure she would not use it to plot against them. As they disembarked from the bus, the agents discovered that the judge had another phone hidden in her wrapper, which they also took away.

Our source said that, despite taking away the second phone, they discovered the judge continued to mutter under her wrapper during the journey back to Lagos. Once in Lagos, a female EFCC detective searched the judge and discovered that she had hidden up to five phones underneath her clothing. She had also concealed an iPad.

According to SR's source, an initial check of the phones showed that the embattled justice was using different phones to communicate with her suspected accomplices perhaps tutoring them to lie to investigators about the source of her inexplicable cash transactions. The source said the phones retrieved from the judge would also be sent to experts for forensic checks.

A senior EFCC source confirmed the drama with Justice Ofili-Ajumogobia, adding that the agency was considering revoking the judge’s administrative bail, accusing her of making moves to undermine their investigative tasks.

23-year-old dies while struggling for gun …his death a relief, says mother

A vigilance group commander in the Oke Aro area of Ogun State, Quadri Adesina, has been arrested by the police after an alleged accidental discharge from his gun killed a 23-year-old man, Yusuf Azeez.

Azeez reportedly wanted to wrest the gun from the suspect when a bullet hit him in the thigh. He was rushed to a hospital in the area, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the deceased’s mother, 42-year-old Toyin Akintayo, had invited Adesina and his colleagues to her residence on CAC Street, Oke Aro, around 8pm on Tuesday to apprehend Azeez, who allegedly threatened to kill her.

It was gathered that Azeez had arrived at home on that day at about 6pm and requested his dinner. The mother was said to have explained to him that she didn’t have enough money to prepare a meal.

Trouble started after the mother, who sells confectionery, gave him N200 to buy food, saying that was all she could afford. He reportedly smashed a bottle on the ground and vowed to kill her.

The mother said, “I wanted to break my fast on that day with garri when he arrived at home. I said there was no kerosene in the stove to prepare food for him and his younger brother. I gave him N200 and the brother N70. He said the N200 was small and threw it at me.

“I explained to him that it was all I had and that we wouldn’t have been in the situation if he did not steal the compressor of my freezer, which I used to sell ice blocks. I also advised him to find a job. He became angry and started threatening me with a knife and the shard of a bottle. He said he would not allow me to sleep at home that night and vowed to kill me.

“I sneaked out to call members of a vigilance group beside our house. They followed me home and tried to pacify him. He fought them and fought for the control of  a gun that one of them carried. The gun exploded in the process and he was injured in the thigh. He died at a hospital near here.”

Akintayo described her son’s death as a relief to her, saying she could no longer endure the shame his notoriety for “stealing and street fighting” had brought to the family.

She added that his son’s gang members stormed her house on Wednesday and threatened that she would pay for Azeez’s death.

She said, “I enrolled him in three different secondary schools, he dropped out. I took him to five different furniture experts to learn the work, he absconded. He went into barbing; I gave him N85,000 to rent a shop and furnished it for him. He didn’t go to the shop until the rent expired.

“His death is a relief to me and the family. He was too troublesome. There was a time he beat up an Oodua Peoples Cogress member while we were living in Idimu (Lagos). I spent a lot of money on the man’s treatment.

“A few weeks ago, he fought in Agege. He was seriously injured. He had been arrested many times by the police for several offences.”

The suspect, 48-year-old Adesina, who is in detention at the Agbado Police Division, said Azeez had beaten the two security guards that accompanied him to the scene, adding that he only wanted to prevail on him from causing further havoc when his gun exploded.

He said, “There was no light when we entered the building. He attacked us and two of my boys fled. I told him that I came to make peace. He said he didn’t fear my gun. He descended on me and wanted to snatch it. We were dragging it with each other when it exploded. I didn’t kill him. He would have killed me and his mother if he had access to the gun.”

The Police Public Relations Officer, Ogun State Police Command, ASP Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the incident.

He said, “The Divisional Police Officer of the station, CSP Abioye Shittu, led operatives to the scene and the suspect has been arrested. The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Eleweran, Abeokuta.

A woman, Biola Simon, has been arrested by the police in Lagos State for allegedly defrauding bank customers after giving them fake prophecies in the Dopemu area.

Simon, who came from Ibadan, Oyo State, was arrested on Thursday by the Dopemu Police Division, after one of her victims reported her to the police.While the suspect was arrested, it was learnt that other suspected accomplices fled.

Punch gathered that a sum of N150,000, which the woman had allegedly swindled out from her victim, was recovered by the policemen after the arrest.

A police source at the Dopemu division said Simon belonged to a four-member syndicate that specialised in defrauding unsuspecting bank customers in the area through fake prophecies.

He said, 

“In her statement, she confessed that the syndicate’s mode of operation was to lurk around bank premises, while her role was to accost a bank customer suspected to be with money.
“The suspect explained that she would pretend that she was new in Lagos and asked for direction from the victim. Simon would subsequently make shocking spiritual revelations about her victim, after which she would advise that a special prayer must be offered for the victim.“The next move was to take the victim to a nearby place where the three other accomplices were waiting and they would replace the money withdrawn by the victim with disposable papers, covered with a few naira notes.“A man who the suspect tried to swindle on Thursday of N150,000 raised the alarm, and a police patrol team in the area apprehended Simon.”

A witness, Rafiu Jimoh, said the policemen had returned the money to the victim.

He said, 

“The woman dressed responsibly, but she usually begged targeted customers coming out of the bank to direct her to an address. She is believed to use magical powers, as she will thereafter start giving revelations about her victim, luring the person to go for prayers with her.
“While the purported prayer is going on by the syndicate, the contents of the victim’s bag or purse will be replaced with papers covered with a few real notes. They will thereafter disappear with the money.
“The woman was arrested on Thursday by a police patrol team, but the three others escaped in a car. The stolen N150,000 was recovered and returned to the victim.”

Youths from Nweke Ndiagu in Effium autonomous community could not control their temper. They decided to vent their anger on Pastor Gideon Chizoba of Grace of God Mission in the area.

What happened? He had stopped Mr. Chukwuma Nomeh’s daughter, Onyinye, from marrying her heartthrob even when her dowry had been paid.

The pastor premised his action on the ground that 

the dowry was paid in his absence and that he should be the one to receive it. He immediately called Onyinye, who was his church member and instructed her to prevail on her father to return the dowry to the husband and reject the already consummated traditional marriage. The girl adhered to Pastor Gideon’s instruction.

Her father, after several pleadings and persuasions to Onyinye not to turn down the marriage since the dowry had been paid which could not yield positive results, contacted Onyinye’s husband to come for the collection of the dowry as the marriage has been cancelled.

Nomeh had also met with Gideon and pleaded that her daughter be allowed to marry her heart’s desire.That also hit the rocks. As the matter could not be resolved, Nomeh reported it to his kinsmen and kindred who warned the Pastor to rescind his decision.

By then, Onyinye and her step-sister have packed their properties and relocated to Pastor Gideon’s church which compounded the matter as the two aggrieved girls refused to return to their father’s house.

Every effort made to ensure that Onyinye and Miracle returned home proved abortive. The matter was reported to the Effium Police Division and Gideon was arrested and taken to Police area command, Abakaliki. He was thereafter granted bail and urged to release Nomeh’s daughters to him.

The police instruction did not go down well with Gideon as he did not release Onyinye and Miracle. Angered by the matter, youths of the area numbering over 30 last week invaded his church and destroyed some properties therein.

They allegedly carted away N800,000 meant to buy land for permanent site of Gideon’s church. The angry youths, who stormed the church at about 11pm, first descended on Miracle, who is the choir mistress and broke her hands.But for the quick intervention of police in the area, Miracle would have been lynched.

The police rescued her and rushed her to Sudan Mission Hospital, where she was revived. Speaking to New Telegraph on the incident, Gideon explained that the church had embarked on 7-day programme when a group of boys jumped into the church premises, switched off electricity generating set and vandalized the church musical instruments.

He said the youths were led by Chukwuma Nomeh, Onyinye’s father who had been accusing him of harbouring his daughters and other female church members to prevent them from getting married.

He explained that misunderstanding ensued between him and Nomeh when a man came to marry Nomeh’s daughter. “I told Onyinye and the husband to go for medical test before they will be wedded but the girl’s father opposed my advice.

He said he did not undergo medical test when he married his own wife and therefore his daughter will not go for any medical test.The man had collected the daughter’s dowry in my absence and I asked why such thing was done in my absence because I have to be around to witness it’’, he said.

Gideon said after the heated argument between him and Nomeh, the purported marriage between Onyinye and the husband could not hold and alleged that Nomeh and his sons have been threatening him with guns and matchets on daily basis.

Onyinye on her part, said that her father broke her hand during the church invasion. She said she decided to make a u-turn on her marriage with her heartthrob on personal ground.

“I decided to change my mind on the marriage which is my right. So, I don’t think it is right for anyone to force me to do what I decided not to do.’’ She appealed to government, good spirited individuals and organizations to intervene into the matter to prevent loss of lives and bring understanding between the church and her father on the matter.

Nomeh, when contacted, said: “My family members attend Grace of God Church in Effium. One of my daughters, Onyinyechi, who attend the church came to me in the house with a man as her fiance. I asked her do you like the man and she replied yes. I also asked her if she has informed her pastor and she said yes.

“I later went to the pastor and asked him if he was aware of this and he replied yes but I supposed to come to him with a wine. 

“The man and his relatives came for the marriage introduction. I and my relatives and kindred asked my daughter if she still wants to marry the man and she said yes. We poured a palm wine inside cup according to our tradition and gave to her and she drank and gave to the man.

"The man in turn drank and gave to the girl to also drink and we said yes, the marriage has been consummated. This aspect is very vital in any marriage rite in our place. 

“We then told the man and his relatives to go and come back for the payment of the dowry. They later came and paid the dowry. My daughter, who was present when the dowry was paid, asked me why the dowry was paid without the presence of her pastor.

"I explained to her that the dowry can be paid without the presence of her pastor. I then reported the matter to the pastor, who queried why the dowry was paid without his being around.

"The pastor ordered me to call the man to come and collect the dowry back, that the man can’t marry the girl anymore.’’ 

He noted that after he refunded the dowry to the man, the next thing his daughter did was to pack her things and move to the pastor’s church, where she was living till the pastor rented house for her.

“My daughter immediately left my house and went and stayed in the pastor’s church. Her sister later joined her and each time they see me on the road passing, they will boo me.

“The pastor later rented house for them and they have been living there since nine months now and refused to return home. I have approached the pastor to release my daughters to me but he has refused to do so. I am calling on government and Civil Liberties Organization to come to my aid. 

“I have reported the matter to Effium Police Division. The Police arrested him and transferred the matter to area command Abakaliki. The pastor was granted bail and the Area Commander ordered him to release my daughters to me but he refused’’, he alleged.

ANOTHER REACTION
On his part, Nomeh’s brother, Chika Nomeh, who corroborated Chukwuma’s claim, said he was surprised that Onyinye could behave the way she behaved.

“I was surprised that a pastor will make a girl to hate her parents to the extent that any time she sees his father, she will beat him. Any time she sees her grandmother, she will slap her.

There was a time she beat up her grandmother. We are no longer interested in anything marriage. Our interest now is how these girls can return to the family. Civil Liberties Organizations and government should help us bring these two girls back to us.’’

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Effium chapter, has intervened in the matter but to no avail. Chairman of CAN, Effium chapter, alleged that Nomeh was maltreating the girls which was why they left their parents. 

His words: “We have tried to resolve the matter but our effort has remained fruitless. We visited the man to resolve the matter but they didn’t agree. It is the way the family is maltreating the girls that made them to run away from their house.

“If you see the way they are being maltreated, you will pity them. It is the father of the girl that called police for Pastor Gideon at Effium police station. From there, the matter came to the area command here in Abakaliki but he has been granted bail.”

Anti-Trump protesters turn violent (Photos)

Violence has broken out at anti-Trump rallies across America overnight as tens of thousands marched against the President-elect before angry mobs attacked police, started fires and shut down highways.
The streets of downtown Oakland in California were choked with smoke Thursday as police launched tear gas and protesters lit fires, in what became by some distance the most violent of the many protests against the election of Donald Trump.


More than 6,000 protesters were seen on the streets of Oakland with an initially peaceful march down a cop-lined street turning nasty after some protesters threw bottles at officers and torched a police car. An office block was also attacked, daubed with 'f*** Trump' graffiti and then set alight.

And thousands more filled streets in Los Angeles before taking over the 110 Freeway while other protesters gathered outside City Hall, lighting fires and waving Trump heads on sticks. There were 14 arrests.

In New York, home of the President-elect, at least 30 people were arrested when cops cracked down on twin demonstrations in Columbus Circle and at Trump Tower.

As many as 7,500 demonstrators were believed to have been split between the two locations, chanting 'Black Lives Matter' and 'Donald Trump, go away, racist, sexist, anti-gay.'

Replace Oyegun With Oshiomhole As APC Chair —Onoriode

A chieftain of All Progressives Congress, APC, in Delta State, Chief Ovie Onoriode, has said that for the party to emerge stronger from internal crises, it must consider replacing its National Chairman, Chief John Odigie- Oyegun with the outgoing Edo State governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, noting that the latter will provide an acceptable leadership in the party.

Onoriade, in a chat with Vanguard, also said that it was wrong for Oyegun to have said that he would do anything to ensure that President Muhammadu Buhari was re-elected in 2019, describing the remark as distractive. He said: ‘’It is against the ideals of the party for the National Chairman to openly shut the door this early against other aspirants.” 

Notorious Guys Gang-R*pe Woman To Death

                             


A woman in her late 20s has been confirmed dead after she was reportedly gang-r*ped in a house that is abandoned on Farawe Street, Agbado-Oja, in the Ifo area of Ogun State.

The woman was found n*ked and unconscious in the building with blood coming out of her private parts. It was also said that her mouth was covered in blood.

The Punch gathered that some children were playing football on a pitch near the building at about 6pm last Wednesday when their ball flipped into the building.

One of them, who went to pick the ball, reportedly discovered the lady, whose identity had yet to be determined, writhing in pains and raised the alarm, which drew other residents to the scene.

A resident, who identified himself only as Soji, said the woman was immediately rushed to a hospital in the area, but died on the way.

He said, “I think the woman was gang-r*ped because there was blood coming out of her private parts and her mouth. She had become very weak and couldn’t talk when we asked her how she got into the building. She just gesticulated with her hands.

“We have not got to the Agbado division, where we wanted to obtain police report to present at a hospital when she died.”

Another eyewitness, who did not want his name in print, said the incident must have been perpetrated by suspected ritual killers.

“Her body has shrunk and she was frail. She was not from this community. I think this case is beyond ordinary r*pe; it has a ritual undertone,” he said.

The Baale of Ago-Agbado, Chief Sunday Oyeogun, said the woman’s corpse was buried around 2pm the following day as none of her relatives showed up.

He said, “It appeared the woman was r*ped and had been in the building a few days before she was found on that day. I informed the health workers at the Agbado-Oke Odo Local Council Development Area so that her corpse would not pose health hazard to residents. She had been buried.

“The family members, who own that building, have issues with one another over the sharing of rent. That was why they sent all the tenants away.”

A police source told Punch that although the case was not formally reported at the station, the police were aware.

“We learnt the woman was a destitute. The case can only be investigated if it is reported,” he said.

EFCC Goes After Fani-Kayode Over $2.1bn Laundering

                               

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission will on Thursday (today) arraign a former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, for allegedly receiving N26m from the Office of the National Security Adviser.
Some fresh money laundering charges were last month filed against Fani-Kayode by the EFCC before the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja.


Fani-Kayode is the sole defendant in the fresh charges numbered, FHC/ABJ/CR/140/2016, before Justice John Tsoho of the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The EFCC in the fresh case filed five counts in which it accused the defendant of diverting N26m allegedly received from the ONSA while Sambo Dasuki was in office.

The anti-graft agency also accused him of handling the said N26m without going through financial institution as required under the Money Laundering Act.

The embattled former minister is already facing 17 counts of money laundering before the Lagos Division of the court, along with a former Finance Minister, Nenadi Usman; Danjuma Yusuf and a firm, Joint Trust Dimension Nig. Ltd.

They were charged with unlawful retention, unlawful use and unlawful payment of money to the tune of N4.9bn.

23 Years Old Stabbed & Murdered For Gate Crashing A Party

n, has been stabbed to death in Ilaje Otumara, in the Iponri area of Lagos State, by some hoodlums.

PUNCH Metro learnt that 23-year-old Akeem was stabbed on Monday with a knife by one Abeeb, who allegedly claimed that Akeem came to a birthday party on Saturday in the neighbouring Olokodana area, when he was not invited.

Akeem, who hailed from Ilorin, Kwara State, was killed on Monday around 9pm.

It was gathered that the hoodlums trailed him to his house and “punished him for daring to gatecrash our party.”

It was learnt that there was tension in the area as the hoodlums also injured two other youths before fleeing the community.

The matter was said to have been reported at the Iponri Police Division.

A manhunt had been launched by the police for runaway Abeeb, whose parents had also fled from their house to evade arrest.

When PUNCH Metro got to the area on Wednesday, a resident, who did not want his name in print, said the deceased’s offence was that he attended a birthday party in a gangsters’ area.

He said, “The party Akeem and his friends went for was on Saturday in Olokodana. At the party, Abeeb, one Austin and other hoodlums challenged them for attending the birthday party, but they settled it and left.

“But on Monday, the same Abeeb went to Ilaje Otumara, and started a fight with some boys. Akeem was spotted and Abeeb stabbed him with a knife in the chest, saying he gatecrashed their party on Saturday. The boy slumped and was left in a pool of blood.

“We tried to arrest Abeeb, but he stabbed two other youths before he escaped.

“When  policemen from Iponri came, Abeeb and his gang members had escaped from the scene. His parents have also relocated due to fear of arrest.”

Speaking with PUNCH Metro, Akeem’s father, Tajudeen Owonikoko, an inter-state driver, said he received the sad news on the telephone while at work.

He added that the police should fish out the killer of his son and bring him to justice.

He said, “Akeem is my only son. He was not a troublesome boy. I was at work on Monday when they called me that someone had stabbed him to death.

“My wife has been hospitalised since that Monday. I want the police to arrest the killer of Akeem. I want him to be brought to justice because he has thrown my family into mourning.”

A Lagos Chief Magistrate’s Court sitting in Ogba, has sentenced a manager with MRS Service Station, Akoka branch, Amedu Friday, to four years imprisonment with hard labour, without an option of fine, for stealing N2,397,650.

The court, presided over by Magistrate K.A. Ogundare, convicted the station manager after he found him guilty of the two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing leveled against him by the men of State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, SCIID, of Lagos Police Command.

According to Vanguard, the convict was first arraigned before the court in January 2014, on the said offences, which the prosecutor, Inspector Cousin Adams, said were contrary to and punishable under Sections 409 and 285 (7) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.

The prosecutor, Adams, informed the court that the convict and one Simeon Ejiro, still at large, broke the security safe of the petrol station and stole the said sum.

The convict was the only person that kept and knew the security safe key and code, and that there was no way the convict could be exonerated from the offence.

The convict denied the offence, claiming that his office was burgled by his alleged conspirator, Simeon Ejiro. 

But Magistrate Ogundare convicted and sentenced him to two years with hard labour on each count.

10 kids feared drowned, scores injured and over 200 structures burnt as Yoruba, Egun youths clash in Lekki/Ajah

 

Ten children were yesterday feared drowned and many others injured during an ethnic clash in Ajah.

Several make shift houses  and properties were also destroyed.

According to a resident, Jonathan Zosu, the children were running away when they drowned inside the lagoon at Otodogbame. He said their bodies were yet be found.

Zosu said: 

“This problem started since last weekend but things really got bad on Sunday when the police came here and arrested our monarch, Baale Dansu Hunkpe. How can anyone claim we are not Nigerians? Where are we from then?
“Our ancestors migrated to this community from Badagry and we have lived here for centuries. Over 90 percent of the people here are Nigerians. The other 10 percent are other nationals who are residents.
“It is all about land tussle. The boys were sent here to chase us out of our homes so that their senders can inherit our properties. So many people were arrested that Sunday but yet, we resisted their attempt to chase us out.
“But early morning on Wednesday, they came again. The youths, mostly cultists, came with cutlasses and other weapons. They were cutting people on sight.
“So many people were injured in that process. As they macheted people, they scattered our homes and set them ablaze. It was in the chaos that the 10 children drowned inside the lagoon.
“We have not seen their bodies yet. As I am talking with you, I am still inside the water. So many people have been rendered homeless. We called the police but instead of assisting us, the police joined the hoodlums in burning our homes.”

But the police said they were no casualties, adding that 16 people were arrested on Wednesday.

According to the police, all the leaders in the community have been arrested and charged to court.

A police source said:

 “No one died. Some people were injured. In all, about 30 persons have been arrested. The division had arrested some of them, including their leaders and charged them to court. They are in prison custody. It is a fight between the Yoruba and non-indigenes. The Yoruba are claiming the Egun are non-indigenes and so, they should vacate the community.
“They said their lands are high priced now and that they want them back but the Egun refused because they have been in the area for almost 100 years and have no place to go. So, because the place is by the water, the hoodlums hide inside the water surrounding bushes and then, come out to light matches on the shanties and disappear again.
“It is not true that police supported them. We have been arresting some of them. And we also put out the fire and policemen from RRS rescued people from being burnt to death.”

No fewer than 200 structures were burnt on Wednesday in Otodo Gbame, an Egun community in the Lekki Phase 1 area of Lagos State, during a clash between some Egun and Yoruba youths.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the crisis started on Sunday, when the Yoruba youths demanded that the residents should relocate from the area.

It was gathered that the Egun community insisted that residents would not leave their houses, tagging the youths as hoodlums and land grabbers.

The crisis came to a head on Wednesday when the Yoruba youths set fire to the structures in the area at about 8am.

The action was said to have triggered a clash between the youths of the Egun community and their Yoruba counterparts.

Two persons were said to have been injured during the clash, while the area was quickly deserted as the fire raged. Some residents reportedly salvaged their property from the fire and fled.

It was learnt that policemen from the Rapid Response Squad, the Maroko division and the Area J Command, Ajah, went to the area to restore normalcy.

A policeman on the team said an abandoned two-day-old baby was rescued from one of the burning structures.

He said, “When the structures were set ablaze, the mother and the father of the baby fled. It was the cry of the baby that drew the attention of policemen to that room. The baby was locked inside the house. The baby was rescued and reunited with her parents.”

“Nobody was killed, but about three persons were injured. The entire community was razed.”

 

A resident, who identified himself only as Hunsu, said, “The crisis started on Sunday. Some people came and said they had bought our land and we should relocate. We did not know that the hoodlums would go to this extent.

“The crisis escalated on Wednesday when they invaded the community and set fire to our property. All my belongings are gone. My wife and children are homeless.”

The state Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, went to the area around 2pm and held a peace meeting between the leaders of the two groups.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, said five suspects were arrested in connection with the crisis.

She said, “The command received a report that the Egun and Yoruba communities were engaged in a serious brawl over land issue. Upon receipt of the information, the command operatives from the RRS and men of the Area J Command moved in. Some shanties being occupied by the residents were set ablaze by the warring factions.

“A baby was rescued from the one of the houses. Five suspects were also arrested in connection with the fracas. The CP visited the scene and promised that everyone involved in the clash would be duly prosecuted.”
