Police Arrest, Fly Journalist To Abuja Over Dana Facebook Post
The young journalist, who is the Deputy Editor of Ibom Nation Newspaper, a local publication, was arrested by the security operatives and forcibly taken to the Federal Capital over a post he allegedly put up on his Facebook page involving Dana Air.
Edoho, had while reacting to a photograph of a purported crash involving a Dana flight heading to Lagos from Abuja in which he was tagged, sought clarification from friends on his list to confirm the authenticity of the story.
He had written, “Rumor via social media (Facebook) has it that Dana Air enroute Abj-Lag with 153 passengers crashed killing all on board. Please could someone help verify the authenticity of this shocking report? Below is (the) pix from the scene as uploaded on my wall.”
But following a petition by Dana Air to the police authorities in Abuja after the said photograph became a hot topic of discussion among a section of Facebook users; Edoho was arrested in Uyo on Friday and taken to the FCT on a Dana flight scheduled to leave by 4pm.
Human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, who confirmed the incident to Saturday PUNCH around 8pm on Friday shortly before leaving Uyo for Lagos, said he saw three plain-clothes security officers forcibly taking Edoho away while still at the Ibom International Airport, Uyo.
He said, “Jerry Edoho sighted me at the Ibom International Airport, Uyo, and alerted me that he was being taken forcibly to Abuja by a team of plain-clothes security men over a publication on Facebook.
“He told me that he was tagged in a post about the recent rumoured crash of a Dana plane, which was false. That, upon being tagged, he made a post like several other Nigerians asking whether the crash report was true. The security men were to convey him to Abuja via a Dana flight that was scheduled to depart by 4pm.
“The security men confronted me for speaking with him ‘without their permission.’ I retorted that Mr. Edoho is a citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and that his right to freedom of expression cannot be taken away. This resulted in an altercation between me and the security men whose identity I cannot immediately ascertain. I understand that his arrest followed a petition by Dana Air to the Nigeria Police Force.
“I am using this platform to urge both the police and the management of Dana Air to respect the fundamental rights of Mr. Edoho. He should be released on bail pending the conclusion of investigation into whatever allegations that have been made against him. This is a democracy, not a dictatorship.”

Chapecoense plane crash survivor Neto meets his new team members (photos)
The club has signed 27 new players to replace those tragically killed for the new season. And one of the 3 survivors of the crash got to meet them and give them some words of advice.
The southern Brazilian club were en route to Medellin to face Atletico Nacional in the final of the Copa Sudamericana when their jet hit a mountain, killing 71 people.
Centre back Helio Neto, pictured above and fullback Alan Ruschel survived, as did reserve goalkeeper Jackson Follmann, who had part of his leg amputated.
Neto attended the presentation on crutches, where he chatted to the youth players who have been
called up to the first time in the wake of the tragedy.
Reports say the club reserved shirt numbers for two of the survivors in the hope they can play again.

Mohammed Yassar Yaqub, 28, was laid to rest four days after he was fatally shot by police officers who were investigating a report of a person with a gun.
His mother, Safia Bano, was visibly distraught and his father, Mohammed, was comforted as his coffin was carried out of the Jamia Masjid Bilal mosque in front of hundreds of mourners in his hometown of Huddersfield.
The crowd was so large that many mourners couldn't fit inside the mosque in Lockwood and were forced to wait outside during prayers on Friday morning.
Yaqub's coffin was carried into and out of the service through the men's entrance, and mourners embraced as they paid respect to the father-of-two.
After prayers Yaqub's body was buried at Hey Lane Cemetery near Castle Hill.
He died on Monday night when West Yorkshire Police officers in unmarked vehicles opened fire on an Audi car that they stopped at Junction 24 of the M62.
A post-mortem examination found that he had suffered gunshot wounds to the chest, said the Independent Police Complaints Commission, which is investigating the incident.
Three bullet holes were visible in the windscreen of the Audi carrying Yaqub, and the IPCC confirmed that a non-police issue firearm was found inside the car.
An inquest into his death was opened and adjourned in a three-minute hearing at Bradford Coroner's Court on Friday morning.

Celebrity couple, Prince Eke and singer Muma Gee have decided to pack up their over four year-old marriage and go their separate ways.
Evidence that the marriage was heading for the rocks emerged recently when Eke posted a message on Instagram complaining that his wife had travelled to Abuja and abandoned their three children to him alone to care for.
The actor added, rather bitterly, that she was doing nothing in the Federal Capital Territory except hang out in night clubs in company with different men.
Reacting to the post, Muma Gee had claimed that she was in Abuja on an official assignment and not having fun as her estranged husband suspected.
But, in a recent development, the singer’s husband reportedly told a blogger that their marriage had unofficially ended three months ago.
The publication quoted Prince Eke as saying that he was no longer married to Muma Gee. Refusing to give reasons for the breakup, he said, “Muma Gee and I are separated and very soon we will be officially divorced. Let’s just say it didn’t work. We are not compatible. Talking about Muma Gee now is going to remind me of things I have forgotten. I have moved on and she has also moved on.”
To the fans of the couple, who have before now looked up to them as a shining example of what a celebrity marriage should be like, this is going to be quite disappointing.

Why Police Raided Patience Jonathan’s Mansion In Abuja
Operatives of the Nigeria Police were said to have raided the house of Dame Patience Jonathan, the wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan, in Abuja on Wednesday, with the aim of uncovering huge foreign currencies allegedly kept in the building.
Multiple sources familiar with the investigation confided in Punch that the security personnel raided the house on a tip-off that huge amount, allegedly believed to be stolen government money, was kept in the building located at Igbeti Rock, Maitama, Abuja.
The operation, which was carried out by operatives of the Special Investigation Panel, headed by a retired Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Ali Amodu, acted at the behest of the Government Asset Recovery and Forfeiture Committee.
Sources explained that an informant had tipped the Federal Government about alleged huge stolen cash hidden in the building and in three other different locations in the Federal Capital Territory.
It was learnt that the informant, who told the government about the cash in the Maitama property, had hinted that the suspect planned to move the money anytime.
Following the intelligence report, the SIP operatives stormed the duplex on Wednesday, but did not find any cash.
A source explained that the police did not know that the building belonged to Jonathan until she identified herself as a former First Lady to the team leader, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Adebo Williams, on the telephone.
The source stated, “At the house, the security men said the house belonged to one Jaga, a Rivers State indigene, and the team leader was directed to call the owner.
“The security man gave the phone to the team leader and she identified herself as former First Lady.
“She spoke in pidgin English and told the operatives to go and take whatever they kept in the house. The team leader advised her to send her lawyer and she did. The house was searched in the lawyer’s presence.”
It was gathered that the team discovered the first of the twin duplex had not been inhabited for a long time.
The men, it was learnt, found some company documents, three Diamond bank accounts cheque leaves, which were taken away for further investigations.
A source said, “The second duplex was also filled with cobwebs and contained four big security safes. All the four security safes were met opened and in clean condition, indicating that they have been in use [probably the cash have been moved already].
A senior officer said a bulletproof Porsche jeep and a BMW car were found locked up in the garage.
