Police officer catches his colleague with his wife and they run him over with a car

After months away from his family, a police officer Corporal Eric Mureithi of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations in Mwingi, Kitui County, Kenya, returned home only to be confronted by a nightmare.

Mureithi now uses crutches and sustained serious injuries to his head and arms after being reportedly attacked by a fellow officer whom he found with his wife on the day he arrived Nairobi.

On January 6, Mureithi, had travelled from Mwingi to Nairobi for a family reunion and to take his son to secondary school. The boy sat his Kenya Certificate of Primary Education examination last year.

According to one of his colleagues, Mureithi hired a lorry to take him and his loads to Nairobi.

“He stood by the road for hours. Finally, Mureithi flagged down a lorry that was heading to Nairobi from Garissa,” the police officer said.

“The crew of the truck agreed to take the goods to his residence in Nairobi at an extra fee.”

The lorry arrived in the city at 1am, that day.

“As it approached the police lines, my friend saw an oncoming vehicle and realised it belonged to his wife,” the officer said.

Nevertheless, the truck with Cpl Murithi reached Ngomongo police quarters and he walked to his house. He reportedly called his wife but her phone went unanswered.

“After several attempts, he decided to walk to the nearby shopping centre which is usually frequented by officers during late hours. He spotted the car on a dark secluded spot minutes later. He switched on his torch and approached it,” the police officer added.

According to the account, when Cpl Murithi was just a few metres from the car, the engine roared and headlights switched on.



“He saw his wife in the passenger seat. The man she was with, a fellow corporal Murithi had known for years was driving,” the police officer said.

“Before he could take a step, the vehicle sped towards Murithi. He jumped on the bonnet and held onto the wipers, but instead of stopping, the driver accelerated,” the colleague said.

He added that after a kilometre of speeding, the driver applied emergency brakes.

“He was thrown off the vehicle and landed metres away. The vehicle then ran over his leg and sped off,” the officer said.

A boda boda rushed Cpl Murithi to Neema Hospital, Kasarani. Another rider sped after the vehicle and took down its registration.

The two boda bodas have recorded statements at Kasarani Police Station. The issue was being investigated at the DCI headquarters on Kiambu Road.

According to our source, Cpl Murithi’s wife has not been seen at home or station since then.

His colleagues say the registration of his wife’s car has not been circulated as happens when a vehicle is used to commit a crime.

Kasarani OCPD Robinson Mboloi, who confirmed the incident, said he had been briefed about the incident.

“I am away from office but the matter is being handled by the complaints office at DCI headquarters,” Mr Mboloi had said.

Lagos Policeman Shoots Man In The Leg, Leaves Him Crippled & NPF Still Won't Pay Compensation

Justice has eluded a 50-year-old father of five, David Ehiosun, three years after a Lagos State High Court awarded N6.1m damages against the Nigeria Police and one Inspector Sunday Omoseigho.

While the Force had yet to obey the court ruling, Omoseigho’s whereabouts remained unknown as Ehiosun battled with a crippled leg.

The Edo State indigene was a driver of a banker resident on Shonibare Estate, in the Maryland area of Lagos, until May 5, 2003, when Omoseigho shot him in the left leg.

The cop was attached to the Mopol 20 division in Oduduwa, Ikeja, and was posted to the house of one Alhaji Aliyu of G Cappa Estate, which is a stone’s throw to Shonibare Estate.


The victim and Omoseigho had reportedly met at Kingsway bus stop, Mobolaji Bank Anthony, where they both visited to eat at a restaurant.

Punch Metro learnt that Ehiosun’s offence was that he declined to assist the policeman in facilitating an amorous relationship with a daughter of the food vendor.

Ehiosun, in an interview with Punch correspondent on Tuesday, said about 15 years after the incident, his life had been marked with “excruciating pains.”

He said, “We knew each other at the restaurant and we both hail from the same state. On May 4, 2003, he told me that he had feelings for the food seller’s daughter and asked me to help him talk to her. I told him the lady and her mother respected me a lot; they usually called me a pastor. So, I told him that I could not do it.

“The following day, I was passing by a drinking joint in the area when he stopped me. He was holding a cup of drink. He asked me the effrontery I had to decline his errand the previous day. I told him I was rushing back to work.

“He poured the drink on me and I protested. He threatened to shoot me if I talked again. I had barely uttered a word when he shot me. He destroyed my leg. I was crying. It was hellish. He threatened to shoot me the second time. I begged him.”

It was gathered that the policeman fled the scene as people rallied round the victim and took him to a hospital.

Ehiosun said the case was reported to the Ikeja Police Station, adding that he was on admission at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, for three days.

He said a doctor told him that the leg might be amputated since he could not afford the cost of treatment.

“I was discharged and went for local treatment in my village. The policeman was initially arrested and detained by the police authorities. The matter was investigated and he was eventually tried at an orderly room trial where he was found guilty and recommended for demotion to sergeant.

“Instead of being prosecuted, he was released on bail. I could not continue to seek justice since I had to spend some time in the village to treat my leg,” he said.

Ehiosun explained that after he returned from the village, efforts he made to recoup a sum of N1.1m he spent on the treatment from the Lagos State Police Command were to no avail.

He said he took the case to court through the Office of the Public Defender of the Lagos State Ministry of Justice on March 24, 2009.

In the suit no ID/574/2009, Omoseigho, the state Commissioner of Police and the Inspector-General of Police were co-defendants.

The claimant, Ehiosun, demanded N10m in general damages and N1,134,000 as the amount he spent on treatment.

It was said that the defendants did not appear throughout the court proceedings presided over by Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile.

In a ruling on the matter, dated October 15, 2014, a copy of which was obtained by our correspondent, Okikiolu-Ighile awarded N6.1m compensation against the defendants.

The ruling read in part, “The claimant has shown that he has suffered and still suffering personal injuries as a result of the breach of duty owed him by the 1st defendant (Omoseigho) while on duty. In the light of the foregoing, I am of the opinion that the claimant is entitled to an award of general damages in a situation such as the prevailing one where the injury to the claimant is not quantifiable.

“In conclusion, therefore, claims (a) and (d) under special damages are refused and dismissed; claims (b) and (c) succeed. I accordingly award the sum of N1,100,000 in special damages and the sum of N5,000,000 for general damages, totalling the sum of N6,100,000 against the defendants in this action.”

Ehiosun said he submitted a copy of the judgment to the office of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, but he had yet to get a reply.

He said he wanted to use the compensation for intensive treatment of the leg so that he could walk with it again.

“I am appealing to the government and rights groups to prevail on the Nigeria Police to pay the damages. I walk with the support of crutches without getting justice for an injury inflicted on me for no just cause,” he added.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Chike Oti, said he would need time to study the judgement and react appropriately.

He said, “The incident happened before I became the PPRO. I need to study the case and the court judgement before I can react.”

A popular Kenyan musician identified as Sheldi Gorgeouz, has made a shocking revelation on how he spent a total amount of money valued at N41.2million to whiten (bleach) his skin.

The Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, has called on the people of the state to defend themselves if attacked.

The governor, who spoke on a radio programme titled, ‘Issue of the moment’ monitored by Punch on Tuesday, said it was necessary for the people to defend themselves in order not to become easy preys.

Ortom noted that in spite of the presence of policemen in the state, killings were still going on in two local government areas.

He flayed the statement credited to the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, which blamed the anti-open grazing law for the New Year attacks, saying it encouraged the herdsmen to carry out more attacks on the state.


He said, “I think the people should have the right to defend themselves and not to make themselves easy preys to be killed in their homes.

“So any lawful means you can adopt to defend yourself, just go ahead in Benue State. We are not going to wait for the Inspector-General of Police to do it.”

The governor however commiserated with the families of the policemen killed in the attacks.

“It is unfortunate, the people are dying and the Inspector-General of Police is playing politics with the issue. The man should resign because he has failed woefully. He doesn’t have the capacity.

“There are many good police officers who can take over that job and perform creditably by turning around the security architecture of this country, making things work and protecting lives and property. That man has no business being the IGP,” Ortom lamented.

Meanwhile, the governor has lifted the curfew imposed on Gboko town.

Ortom had last Wednesday imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew on the town following the killing of seven travellers.

Ortom announced the lifting of the curfew at a meeting he held with the leaders of the Benue Motorcycle Association and heads of security agencies at the Benue Peoples House, Makurdi.

He condemned the killing of the travellers and maintained that the victims were not Fulani people as reported

OLX close down offices in Nigeria

There are indications that OLX, an online marketplace owned by Naspers, has shut down its offices in Nigeria, a move that will affect over 100 of its employees.

It was gathered that the workers were formally informed of the decision on Tuesday through a notice of termination, which will commence in March, and will be followed by the management team in April.

In an emailed response by the Public Relations and Communications Lead, OLX Nigeria, Uche Nwagboso, the company confirmed that it made a decision to consolidate its business operations in Nigeria.

According to her, the company has made provision for financial compensation for the workers that will be affected.


“We made a difficult but important decision in Nigeria to consolidate our operations between some of our offices internationally. Our marketplace will continue to operate here – uninterrupted – as it has since 2010, and we remain committed to the many people here who use our platform to buy and sell every month,” Nwagboso said.

She added, “We continue to be focused on constantly innovating to make sure that OLX remains the top classified platform in the country. Of course, we are committed to helping our affected colleagues during this transition and have already offered them meaningful financial and other support.

“As we’ve expressed to them directly, we are extremely grateful for their many significant contributions to OLX’s success.”

OLX, which launched in Nigeria in 2012, said it had more than three million sellers and buyers registered on its platform in 2015 and reported that items valued at N12.1tn were posted for sale on its website in 2016.

OLX is a classified ad platform that connects people in local communities to buy, sell or exchange used goods and services through their mobile phone or on the web.

OLX operates in 45 countries and has an average of 54 million monthly listings of items for sale on its website.

Leave Israel or face jail -Israel Prime Minister

Israel began warning thousands of African migrants Sunday that they must leave by the end of March, officials said, under a plan that could see them jailed if they refuse.

On January 3, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced implementation of a plan to deport about 38,000 migrants who had entered the country illegally, mainly Eritreans and Sudanese.

The controversial plan gives them until the end of next month to leave voluntarily or face jail and eventual expulsion.


Immigration authority spokeswoman Sabine Haddad said that officials began issuing migrants letters on Sunday advising them that they had 60 days in which to leave the country voluntarily.

For now, the notices are being given only to men without families, officials said.

Buhari to appoint a new CBN Governor

President Muhamamdu Buhari has nominated Mr. Edward Adamu, for appointment as the deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Adamu from Gombe State, replaces Mr. Sulaiman Barau, from Zaria, Kaduna State, who retired in December, 2017.

A statement on Thursday by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, said a letter had since been sent to the Senate seeking Adamu’s confirmation.

"We are on notice that in 10 days, we shall be attacked" Taraba state Governor Darius Ishaku

Governor Darius Ishaku of Taraba State yesterday disclosed he has received a letter by suspected insurgents that the state would be attacked within ten days.

Ishaku spoke when the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Uche Secondus, visited to offer condolences over the killings in the state.

“We are on notice that in 10 days, we (Taraba) shall be attacked. I have alerted all security agencies. We are waiting.

“A helicopter has dropped arms and ammunitions in the night without its mission established. It is not a time to keep quiet; we are living in fear,” he added.


The Taraba State Commissioner of Police, David Akinremi, had in a statement, dismissed the report of arms-filled chopper landing in Taraba at night as “an unfounded and misleading rumour.”

But the state government is not satisfied. Residents are suspecting connivance, Ishaku said the alleged arms and ammunition might be meant for the militia group threatening to attack Taraba.

Ishaku lamented that his pain, as a governor, is in the fact that he had promised to develop the state if the people could give him peace. “Unfortunately, I have provided development but peace has been elusive,” he said.

He said he has been given a crown without a sword, so he cannot fight and keep control of his power, since he relies on the federal might for help.

“Here, we rely on people who, when you give them instructions, they tell you to wait until they get a clearance order from above.

“Before the clearance comes from Abuja, you have lost hundreds of lives. This is absolutely absurd and disappointing, particularly when you meet people like me who want to work with zeal,” he said.

The governor wants an investigation into the killing of over 68 persons by herdsmen and the killing of a member of the State House of Assembly, Hosea Ibi, who was kidnapped in Takum directly opposite a military barrack without any trace of the killers established.

He said: “We are sad and angry because there is no security in our land. Taraba buried 68 persons when Benue was burying 73. Should we continue like that? The choice is ours.

“But we shall continue to cry and scream. If we are not heard in Nigeria, we might be heard in Chad, Egypt, England and or US.”

Lagos Residents Jailed For Illegal Dumping Of Refuse

The Samuel Ilorin Magistrate’s Court, Ogba, has sentenced no fewer than 33 Lagos residents to different terms of imprisonment and community service for violating the state Environmental Sanitation Laws 2017.

The offenders were said to have been apprehended by operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) on Tuesday, January 30, 2018.

They were reportedly apprehended at Ikeja, Iyana-Ipaja, Mushin and Iyana-Isolo areas, among others, for illegal street trading, indiscriminate dumping of refuse and illegal crossing of the highways.

The Magistrate, Ogundare Olayiwola, was said to have sentenced each of the accused on one count of indiscriminate dumping of refuse to five months’ imprisonment, with an option of N20,000 fine.


“Those arraigned on one count of illegal street trading were sentenced to five months’ imprisonment, with an option of N20,000 fine.

“Those on one count of illegal crossing of highways were sentenced to five hours’ community service, with an option of N10,000 fine,” the Head of the Public Affairs Unit, LAGESC, Alabi Rahmat, added in a statement.

The Executive Secretary, LAGESC, Mrs. Idowu Mohammed, according to the statement, said the agency would not relent in arresting environmental defaulters in line with the state government policy of sanitising the environment.

She, however, appealed to Lagosians to always obey the laws of the state in their own interest.

Man duped his friend in Port Harcourt, Rivers set him up in Computer Village Ikeja

Mr. Vitalis Darlinton has been duped by his friend Mr. Eruagah ThankGod who has been reportedly arrested after he tricked his friend Darlinton and duped him to the tune of 2.4 million, this happened after Darlinton had informed ThankGod that he had raised enough money to travel abroad for greener pastures.

According to P.M. Express, the incident happened in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where both the suspect and the victim resided. But the suspect tricked the victim to Lagos and set him up at the computer village in Ikeja, Lagos.
It was gathered that Darlinton had informed ThankGod that he had raised enough money to travel abroad for greener pastures. It was when ThankGod discovered that the victim actually had such huge money that he promised to assist him to procure travel documents.

It was gathered that after the victim gave him the money, he procured fake travel documents and brought him to Lagos having convinced him that he had already paid for the ticket for his travelling.

However, when they got to Lagos, Thankgod paid for an accommodation in a hotel at Iyana Ipaja area where they lodged. The next day, he took Darlington to computer village to buy a phone as he would travel the next day.
When they got to Computer Village, he bargained for a phon e for N100,000 and told the owner of the phone that he wanted to withdraw money from a bank nearby and that Darlinton will wait behind at the store he returned from the bank.

He collected the phone and pretended as if he was going to the bank but escaped to Ikotun to sell the phone.

He was unlucky after he had negotiated with the buyer who demanded for a receipt and he could not produce any. He was handed over to the police at Ikotun Division who detained and interrogated him.

Before then, Darlington has been rounded up in the market as a criminal and was about to be lynched after they had waited for ThankGod to no avail.

However, the victim was lucky as the police used ThankGod’s phone to call him. The victim picked the call and narrated to the police what ThankGod had done and that his life was in danger at the Computer Village.

According to the father of one of R. Kelly’s girlfriends, R. Kelly is getting away with his alleged sex cult because America doesn’t care about underage black girls being victimized.

Last year July, BuzzFeed published an article alleging that singer R. Kelly was holding multiple young women — most of them 19 or in their early 20s — in various properties around the United States and forbidding them to leave what their parents described as a “cult.”

The women claim to be with Kelly of their own free will, but their families say that they’re suffering from Stockholm Syndrome.

According to BuzzFeed’s report, the women in R. Kelly’s homes are forced to follow Kelly’s every instruction or face physical punishment.

The story followed several decades’ worth of lawsuits against R. Kelly that alleged he’d engaged in traumatizing sexual relationships with young women, some of them underage.

But few of the women named in those suits were willing to come forward and speak to the press, presumably at least in part because they’d signed nondisclosure agreements with Kelly in exchange for settlement money.

One of his victims who spoke out, Pace (maiden name Johnson) said she first met Kelly as a 15-year-old fan outside a court building, when he was on trial for charges of child pornography in 2008.

She went to the proceedings daily, until Kelly’s acquittal. A year later, at age 16, she says she lost her virginity to R. Kelly.

Man Sell Baby For 650k

                   

A 38 year-old herbalist identified as Emmanuel Chigozie, has been arrested in the Nyanya area of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, for allegedly selling a baby to a female client who was barren  for N650,000.

It was  learnt that Chigozie, also known as Akuchi, was arrested by operatives of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons and the Department of State Services on Saturday after weeks of surveillance.

According to NAPTIP, the herbalist, who hails from Enugu State, allegedly administered concoctions to his female clients who were seeking to become pregnant and thereafter offered to sell other people’s babies to them.

Chigozie was said to be the owner of Akuchi Herbal Concept at New Nyanya, Abuja.

Our correspondent gathered that a woman, who was Chigozie’s client and paid him N650,000 for a baby, was arrested by the police at a checkpoint between Abuja and Minna, Niger State, some weeks ago.

The woman, whose name could not be ascertained, was reportedly found with the baby, who was suspected to be unrelated to her.

Based on the police’s suspicion, the woman was detained and she reportedly confessed that Chigozie sold the baby to her.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the woman confessed to be Chigozie’s patient and claimed that the herbalist administered some herbs to her after years of infertility.

It was gathered that Chigozie allegedly directed the woman to meet a syndicate in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where the baby was handed over to her.

The NAPTIP Head, Press and Public Relations, Josiah Emerole, confirmed the incident.

He said, “He warned the woman not to go to any hospital and directed her to Port Harcourt where a baby was handed over to her. She confessed to paying the suspect the sum of N650,000 for his services.

“He has been arrested and he is being investigated for sale of human beings and child trafficking. The NAPTIP Director-General, Julie Okah-Donli, has warned women to stop patronising such herbalists as the sale of babies is a crime punishable by law.

“We advise couples who wish to adopt a child to go through the legal means as anything short of this is legally and morally wrong. Some of these babies were abducted from their biological parents and sold off against their wish.

Kennedy Toomwabwa Dede was reportedly assaulted by 8 people this week when he was kidnapped from his car and taken to the Çanakkale Pond, where he was eventually killed.

Three Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus citizens, have been arrested in connection with the case. The police are still investigating.

Court Send DMX back to Jail For Failing Drug Test

                        

Popular rapper DMX, will be sent to jail for violating his probation in his tax evasion case which he pleaded guilty to last month to avoid the $1.7 million in taxes which he owed.. The rapper was taken into custody in a Manhattan court Tuesday morning for failing drug tests.According to TMZ, the judge ruled that he was a flight risk after testing positive for opiates, cocaine and oxycodone. Part of his bail terms was for him to stay away from drugs and alcohol.

DMX was supposed to be completing rehab while he was out on bail in his tax evasion case and had even been given some leeway to travel for performances as of recently, but after he failed his drug tests, he was sent back to jail.

U.S. Attorney Spokesman Nicholas Biase says prosecutors refered to the video TMZ posted of DMX last week, which showed him looking like he was high, as he preached in a St. Louis airport bar, where witnesses said he was drinking and buying shots for other people there. Heavy drinking is also a probation violation

Friends, Family, Dignitaries Gather For Deji Tinubu's Funeral At RCCG's City Of David

Friends and family of late Deji Inubu who slumped and died on the 25th of January are currently gathered at RCCG's City of David, Victoria Island, Lagos for his funeral service.

The Lagos State Governor and his wife are in attendance, Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun is also present, Wife of the Vice-President, Dolapo Osinbajo, Tokunbo Afikuyomi, Dele Momodu are also among the dignitaries at the funeral. Late deji is survived by his wife, Yemisi Tinubu and two children. May his soul rest in peace.

10 Die In Brazil Jail Fight

A fight between rival groups in a jail in northeastern Brazil killed 10 detainees and injured several Monday, officials said.

The fight broke out during the morning in the Public Jail of Itapaje in Ceara state. Police and guards brought the situation under control, according to a statement from the Justice Department of Ceara.

Several detainees who were injured in the fight were treated at a local hospital and then sent back to the jail. Three, however, were injured more seriously and were being sent to a hospital in another city.


In response to the fight, authorities ordered the transfer 44 detainees to other facilities, a common practice to separate rival gang members. Officials also seized two guns, two knives, drugs and cellphones in searches following the unrest.

The department has however declined to give more details.

Nigerian Senators, Customs Boss In New Brouhaha

It was meant to be a routine visit, but yesterday’s oversight duty by senators at the Customs headquarters turned out to be more. It sparked another confrontation between them and Comptroller General (CG) Colonel Hameed Ali (retd.).

The Senate and Col. Ali had a long row over his refusal to appear before the upper chamber in uniform.

The drama yesterday was triggered by remarks made by the Chairman ad- hoc committee on “Economic Waste in the Nigerian Customs Service”, Senator Dino Melaye, over the manner in which the Senate delegation was received at the Customs Abuja headquarters.

Melaye noted that Col. Ali, by way of protocol, should have come down from his office to welcome the committee members into the premises.


The Kogi West lawmaker said it was a breach of protocol for the CG to casually meet the delegation at the conference room.

Melaye noted that ushering in the senators had been the practice with statutory bodies, such as Immigration, Prisons and others, over the years.

He wondered why such established etiquette, which he said was the norm under previous Customs CGs was not accorded the committee by Col. Ali.

Melaye said, “Before reading the prepared speech of the committee, let me make this small remark on what we have just observed here in form of breach of protocols.

“Mr CG, rather than meeting us here at the conference room by way of courtesy, you are supposed to have met us at the ground floor on arrival into the premises.

“That has been the practice of statutory bodies headed by Chief Executive Officers like you. Relevant Senate committees have over the years been accorded this by bosses of Immigration Service, Prison Service and others, making us to wonder why it is not so here today under your leadership.

“Therefore, before proceeding further,  on account of this observation ,  we want the Customs management to know that the presence of this committee before it implies that the Senate itself is before it to put things in order as regards the economic waste taking place in the Customs Service  requiring the  seriousness it deserves from you and the entire  management.”

Melaye insisted that the committee’s meeting with the Customs management was more or less that of the Senate.

Apparently to indicate that the Senate was sitting, Melaye hit the gavel on the table to declare the meeting open.

He read a speech to outline how the committee would carry out its investigation on the alleged economic waste in the Customs Service.

In a counter attack, the Customs CG told the Senate delegation that the NCS has its own protocol, which is different from other public establishments.

Col. Ali told the committee that the NCS would not want to be dictated to on matters of etiquette and protocol.

He said: “We have our own protocol as regards receiving visitors like you. I don’t need to come downstairs to receive you just as nobody in the Senate or House of Representatives has ever come out to receive us anytime we visit the National Assembly.

“So, there is no breach of protocol for not coming down to welcome you since appropriate officers have been assigned to do so. Our protocol is our protocol and should be allowed to be.

“In fact, by way of etiquette, it is the committee that is supposed to come to my office first on arrival and not just come straight to the conference room.

“Let me state clearly that we in the Nigeria Customs Service are servants of the people. We believe in Nigeria and working with others to make it great without being railroaded in anyway.

“Personally, I took this job because of my commitment to serve this country selflessly, having earlier done so in the military.  So, nobody can tell me that I’m not a committed Nigerian.

“On your assignment you called economic waste, we shall cooperate with you to unearth whatever you want to unearth and effect any correction if there is any.”

The Senate committee, which appeared not to be satisfied with Col. Ali’s reply, boycotted a group photograph organised by the Customs.

As the visitors got set to leave the premises, they found that the Customs boss’ convoy was obstructing them –  an action which they thought was deliberate. There was no official comment on this last night.

While the Customs boss left the headquarters at about 2:15pm with his siren blaring convoy, the senators team left around 2:20pm after staying in their bus for about 15 minutes.

Besides, Melaye, other senators in the delegation are: Samuel Anyanwu (Imo East), Gilbert Nnaji (Enugu East), Hamman Isah Misau ( Bauchi Central) and Babajide Omoworare ( Osun East)

Sokoto Pays N5,000 Monthly To 10,120 Families To Keep Girls In Schools

More than 10,120 families in Sokoto State receive government’s N5,000 monthly stipend aimed at enhancing girl-child education, according to Malam Musa Lumu, Chairman, Gwadabawa Micro Finance Bank, Sokoto.

Lumu revealed on Sunday in Sokoto that his bank and four other Micro Finance Banks were handling the payments via a conditional cash transfer scheme introduced by the state government.

“The stipend is expected to support the families’ economies so as to discourage parents from sending their children to hawk.

“It will also assist the parents to provide kits and other minor demands that would enhance educational pursuit,” he said.


He said that the state government had invested much toward supporting child education programmes from basic to tertiary levels, and urged parents to take advantage of such gestures to educate their children.

Lumu said that the gesture by the government and development partners would encourage parents to send their wards to schools so as to prepare them to compete for opportunities in future.

He said that the state government had provided N 500 million as counterpart funding toward executing UNICEF education projects comprising the cash transfer scheme and other interventions.

Careless Danfo Driver Kill His Conductor

                             

A 25-year-old commercial bus driver, John Okoye, who allegedly drove recklessly, causing his conductor to fall off the vehicle and die, was on Monday brought before an Ojo Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

Okoye, who resides at Adensin Street, Igando, a Lagos suburb, is facing a charge of manslaughter.

The Police Prosecutor, Insp. Uche Simeon, told the court that the accused committed the offence on April 14, 2017, at 8pm along Iyana-Iba/Igando Road, Ojo Lagos.

Simeon said that the accused, on the fateful day, drove his Volkswagen bus with Registration No. LND 374 XU in a reckless manner.

“The conductor, Matthias Nwoge, fell off the bus in motion due to the driver’s reckless driving while in a haste to carry passengers at the bus stop

“Nwoge was rushed to the hospital where he was confirmed dead,” he said.

The offence contravened Section 227 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Section 227 stipulates life imprisonment for offenders.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty of the offence.

In his ruling, the Magistrate, Mr A. A. Adesanya, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

He said one of the sureties should be a blood relation of the accused and the other a community leader or a clergy.

Adesanya adjourned the case until March 12 for mention.

A Pastor identified as , Bernard Towoju, has urged an Igando Customary Court, Lagos to dissolve his marriage to his wife, Abosede, for allegedly using her private part to invoke curses on him.

Towoju, 53, said in his divorce petition on Monday that “I cannot continue to make love with a woman who always goes unclad and swears for me with her private part”.

According to him, Abosede is stubborn, wayward and troublesome.

“She once came to my office to fight me and tore my clothes in the presence of my colleagues. We fight on daily basis and hurt each other a lot.

“We always land in the police station after our fight, in fact, we are regular customers at the station,’’ he said.

The petitioner accused his wife of threatening his life, adding that his wife always hit him with dangerous weapons whenever they quarrelled.

“I had to run away from the house I built 10 years ago to rent an apartment for safety.

“She chased me with cutlass, bottles and sticks; our neighbours can testify to that.

“I am afraid, I cannot sleep under the same roof with her with my two eyes closed,” he said.

He begged the court to dissolve the marriage that the love he once had for her had faded and he could no longer tolerate her ill-nature and troubles.

The respondent, Abosede, a fashion designer, accused her husband of calling her a witch.

“He said everywhere he went for a solution to his problems, they always tell him that I am behind his predicament.

“My hands are clean; I know nothing about his woes.

“Towoju abandoned me and the children 10 years ago, I have been taking care of the children,” the 46-year-old woman added.

The mother of four urged the court not to grant her husband’s request for the dissolution of the marriage, saying “I still love him”.

In his judgment, the court President, Mr Akin Akinniyi, said the petitioner was adamant despite all mediation from the court and family.

“Since the petitioner insisted on divorce after several interventions, the court has no choice than to dissolve the union in spite of the fact that the wife still claims she loves her husband.

“The court pronounced the marriage between Pastor Bernard Towoju and Mrs Abosede Towoju dissolved today, both parties henceforth ceased to be husband and wife.

“Both are free to go their separate ways without any hindrances and molestation,” Akinniyi ruled.

Nigeria Professional Football League side, MFM FC, on Sunday suffered an auto crash on their way from Jos back to Lagos.

The Olukoya Boys were in action against Plateau United on Saturday; losing by a lone goal and they were heading back to their base to prepare for their next game which is against Wikki Tourist.

It was gathered that Sunday’s accident was caused by a brake failure and it left some players and Coach injured.

There was no loss of life in the accident.
