Emotions were raised on Thursday as passers-by cursed an unknown mother who abandoned her baby at a refuse dump site in Lagos.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the corpse of the baby girl was discovered at a dump site at Costain Bus-stop, along Apapa Road in Ebute Meta, Lagos State.
The baby, dressed in a light-green unisex wear with a black cap, looked malnourished.
The identity of the mother of the baby was not known as of the time of filing this report.
Reacting, a sympathiser and a resident of Apapa Road told NAN correspondent at the spot where her corpse was that he saw the baby still breathing when he was going to the office in the early hours of the day.
The sympathiser, who pleaded anonymity, said he put a call through to the Lagos State emergency services numbers.
This was to alert the officials of the relevant agency responsible for rescuing children from such an ugly situation to come and rescue her, he said.
He expressed his disappointment that the responders could not rescue the child before her untimely death.
“Imagine this kind of tragedy, if the baby had been rescued on time, she would not have died.
“The Lagos State Emergency Unit has failed us,’’ he said.
Adeolu Aderogba, a trader selling bread beside the scene, said she resumed her morning routine trading around 7.00 a.m. only to discover that the baby was dumped at the refuse site.
“I found the baby on the refuse when I came this morning. Whoever dumped the baby there must be a very wicked person,’’ she said.
She said that babies were precious gifts from God and should be cared for, but some mothers seemed to be careless and morally bankrupt.
Also, Mr Opeyemi Rasheed, a businessman, said that the baby ought to have been buried normally instead of being dumped on refuse.
“A grave should have been dug instead of just depositing the baby by the roadside,’’ Rasheed said.
Mr Steven Yusuf, a mechanic, who condemned the dumping of the remains of the baby girl at a waste bin said that he would report the incident at the Mainland Local Government Area.
“This will enable the council to remove the corpse and give it a proper burial.
“It is not good as the corpse is lying around.
“It can lead to an outbreak of diseases for the inhabitants of the area,’’ Yusuf said.
NAN reports that as of 10.30am, the corpse was still at the refuse dump.
The Police Public Relations Officer for the Lagos State Command, CSP Chike Oti, confirmed the incident and said that the Iponri Police Division had been notified about the baby’s corpse.
Oti told NAN that the police was taking action, but added that no arrest had been made in connection with the matter.

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Bayelsa State chapter, Chief Lionel Jonathan-Omo, is dead.
Jonathan-Omo, the Deputy Campaign Director General of Sylva/Igiri Campaign Organisation during the 2016 governorship election in the state reportedly had a fatal fall from the balcony of his two-storey building in his country home in Beleu-Pogo in Ogbolomabiri, Nembe Local Government Area of the state.
He was said to be relaxing on the balcony when he started feeling dizzy. He was trying to get up with the aid of a pillar close to him when he fell off the two-storey building.
Close associates revealed that the fatal fall from the balcony was discovered by his wife after hearing the sound from the kitchen.
He was immediately rushed to a hospital in the state where doctors were said to have advised that he be taken to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital in Rivers State.
It was learnt that the deceased was operated upon when he was rushed to the UPTH but did not survive the operation.
A Robert Egbe in Lagos Wednesday authorised the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to seize N200 million allegedly kept in several commercial banks by two military officers and their three firms.
Justice Sule Hassan ordered that the sum be forfeited to the Federal Government, pending the conclusion of investigation as to their origins.
The officers are: Adamu Bello Argungu and John Onimisi Ozigi, while their firms are: Falsal & Co Global Services Nigeria Ltd; Diamond Head Ventures & Development Company Ltd; and Sweetex Bureau De Change Ltd.
The EFCC told the judge, through an ex parte application, that the defendants fraudulently withdrew the sum from the Defence Headquarters over-head expenses accounts.
Its counsel, Mr. Nkereuwem Mark Anana, alleged that the sums were warehoused in five banks.
The commission’s application, marked FHC/L/CS/1094/18, was supported by an 18-paragraph affidavit deposed to by its operative, Mr. Clever Ibrahim, two exhibits and a written address.
Ibrahim averred that Argungu and Ozigi are of the Nigerian Army and Air Force respectively, made several unauthorised withdrawals from the Defence Headquarters Overhead Expenses Account.
The deponent alleged that the money was neither deposited in their salary accounts, nor accounts belonging to the Defence Headquarters, but in corporate accounts and other accounts belonging their companies.
He alleged further that although a post-no-debit order was placed on the accounts in compliance with Section 6(5) of the Money Laundering and Prohibition Act, 2011, it lapsed after 72 hours.
Thus, the order of the interim forfeiture was sought to debar the respondents from tampering with the money.

The boyfriend of Love Island star Sophie Gradon has been found dead just days after her funeral, police have said.
The body of Aaron Armstrong, 25, was discovered at his home in Blyth at 12.20pm on Tuesday.
A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “At around 12.20pm on 10 July, police received a report from the ambulance service that a 25-year-old man had been found deceased at a property on Furnace Road in Bebside, Blyth. There is not believed to be any third party involvement and a report will now be prepared for the coroner.”
The day before his death, Armstrong uploaded a picture to his Instagram account of himself and his late girlfriend.
Armstrong had posted a number of tributes to Gradon on his social media page, sharing images of the two together on nights out and on holiday.
In a post on Instagram uploaded shortly after his girlfriend’s death, Armstrong wrote: “To think I will never see your beautiful smile again haunts me you are the girl of my dreams we spoke of having kids and spending the rest of are lives together I’m so devastated that we will never get that chance to grow old together and raise a family.

Operatives of the Imo State Police Command have arrested a pastor in the Assemblies of God Church in Owerri, Chukwuma Okezuo, for allegedly giving prophecies against the state Governor, Rochas Okorocha, during a church service.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Andrew Enwerem, who paraded the cleric before newsmen on Tuesday, accused him of prophesying during last Sunday’s church service in the Urratta area of Owerri.
The pastor was alleged to have said in his prophecy that the governor was recruiting young boys in the state with the sole aim of kidnapping children between zero and 10 years for ritual purposes.
The police spokesperson said the pastor prophesied that Governor Okorocha was allegedly engaging in the ritual exercises towards the 2019 governorship election in the state.
He added that the “false prophecy” was capable of causing rancour and panic in the state.
“I parade before you one acclaimed pastor, Chukwuma Okezuo, of Assemblies of God Church. He was arrested during a church service last Sunday at Owaelu Urratta over false prophecies against the person of the Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha.
“The suspect, while on the pulpit, made false prophecies against the governor that he was recruiting young boys to be kidnapping children between zero and 10 years for ritual purposes. He falsely prophesied that the governor was engaging in the ritual purposes with the sole aim of winning the 2019 governorship election and therefore asked the congregation to pray.
“This false prophecy, by this acclaimed pastor, is very malicious and capable of causing rancour, panic, anxiety and disintegrating the state. The Imo State Police Command, under the leadership of Commissioner of Police, Mr Dasuki Galandanchi, will not watch the people jeopardise the peace of the state.
“Religious leaders should be mindful of the things they say. We will charge the suspect to court for legal action,” he said.
In an interview with Southern City News, the 40-year-old pastor, who hails from the Mbaitoli Local Government Area of the state, said what the police accused him of was untrue.
He said that he only asked the congregation to pray against untimely death and spiritual manipulations without mentioning the name of anybody including that of the governor.

Rick Ross regularly uses the phrase, and also founded a record label imprint called Maybach Music Group, and now Young Muhammad is claiming the rapper stole his intellectual property in using the phrase.
Muhammad claims that as Rick Ross featured on his 2007 track with a similar name, Caprice Music, he then got the idea to start his imprint under Maybach Music.
In legal documents seen by TMZ, Muhammad claims that his track inspired the 42-year-old’s company and catchphrase.
He is now suing for $9,999 (£7,500) for theft of intellectual property, as well as suing Roc Nation for endorsing the music group.

The Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC), Tor Uja, has said 100 Christian pilgrims absconded during the 2017 pilgrimage to Israel.
Mr Uja, who made this known while receiving security report of the 2017 pilgrimage on Monday in Abuja, said that no pilgrim absconded in Rome and Greece.
The NCPC boss said that the 100 pilgrims who absconded were from five states in Nigeria, adding that a serving soldier, a police inspector and a lecturer were among the absconders.
He, however, did not disclose the states and names of the absconders, but tagged the states as “red flag”.

The President of a Mapo Customary Court in Ibadan, Ademola Odunade, on Friday dissolved the 19-year marriage between one Kehinde Anthony and husband, Samuel, over threat to life and irreconcilable differences.
Odunade said that the court had no other option than to dissolve the union as a result of irreconcilable differences.
He ordered that the petitioner and the respondent be separated. Odunade, however, awarded custody of the children produced by the union to the petitioner and directed the respondent to pay N10,000 monthly as feeding allowance for the children.
The arbitrator also ordered the respondent to ensure adequate provision for the welfare and education of the four children.
Earlier, Kehinde had told the court that her husband was “wicked and irresponsible.’’
“My lord, Samuel has never lived up to his responsibility as a husband and father because he keeps evading his responsibilities at home.
“I have to work extra hard to feed and send the children to school.
“In fact, Samuel constantly subjected me to battery, which had adversely affected my health,” Kehinde said.
In his response, the respondent agreed to the divorce request of the petitioner although he denied all the allegations levelled against him.
“My lord, Kehinde is a blatant liar who derives pleasure in parking in and out of my house on a yearly basis.
“I am not surprised by her leaving our matrimonial house because she parks out of my house every now and then. It is her attitude.
“For no reason at all and at her convenience, Kehinde leaves the home and this is due to her constant visit to unholy places and people such as witch doctors.
“Worse still, Kehinde recently inflicted a very serious injury on me after she and her concubine attacked me.
“Unknown to me, she was in a romantic relationship with the person she introduced to me as pastor.
“The man sometimes mediated between Kehinde and I whenever we had misunderstanding.
“After they both attacked and injured me, they reported me at a Police station, telling lies against me.
“However, the Police later found out that the man and Kehinde were, indeed, dating each other.
“It was in the process of her movement from one church to another and one fetish centre to another that she usually encountered problems,” Samuel said.
