People In Kwara Will Start Going To Jail For Tax Evasion

Shocker awaits residents of Kwara State from November as anyone found guilty of defaulting in tax payments would be jailed.

Executive Chairman of Kwara State Internal Revenue Service, KWIRS, Dr. Muritala Awodu, who disclosed this yesterday at a breakfast meeting in Ilorin, said the decision became necessary to encourage those paying tax to continue to do so, while those not paying would be made to pay.

He added that the decision was to enable the state government meet its target of N3 billion per month and even beyond and to help the state meet its financial obligations to the stakeholders without depending on federal monthly allocations.

He said: ”Kwara State Internal Revenue Service has inaugurated a team to comb the 16 local government areas of the state for enforcement of tax payment, with warnings that defaulters risk various categories of penalties, including imprisonment.”
