Niger State Police Command has paraded
20 suspects in connection with the killing of the Divisional Crime
Officer, Kpakungu Police Division, DSP Aaron Sunday who was hacked down
by rampaging hoodlums last Friday at Barikin Saleh area of Minna.
The remains of the 47-year-old were released by the police
authorities for burial at Kagoro in Kaura Local Government of Kaduna
state on Thursday.
Sunday met his death when he led his men to arrest youths who were unleashing terror on innocent people at a wedding ceremony.
The father of six was murdered few weeks after his promotion to DSP in charge of crime in Kpakungu Divison in Minna.
Parading the suspects before journalists at the Command headquarters,
the Command’s spokesman, Bala Elkana, said the 20 suspects were behind
the killing of the DCO.
Elkana disclosed that the suspects were picked up from different areas
of Minna, adding that they were found with dangerous weapons which they
used in attacking innocent residents.
“Some of them were invited by their friends to that particular ceremony just to disrupt the occasion,” he alleged.
He stated further that on the receipt of the distress call, the command deployed a team led by Sunday to the scene.
Elkana said, “We dispatched a team of policemen led by the late DSP
Aaron Sunday to the scene with a view to maintaining peace there, but
unfortunately, the hoodlums attacked the team and injured some members
of the team while the officer lost his life as a result of the attack.”
“So, we moved in diligently and got them arrested, but we are still
looking for about three or two fleeing members of the gang because they
were in large number.”
He said those arrested were helping the police in their investigation,
adding that some of them had stated the roles they played in the killing
of the officer.
“They have explained the roles they played in the crime and at the
completion of our investigation, we will arraign them in court,” he
added.
