Mudslide kills newly wed in Lagos (photos)

A mudslide collapsed on shanties at Agindingbi area of Lagos on Tuesday killing a 16-year old girl who just wedded 10 days ago.Spokesperson, National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Ibrahim Farinloye told PM News that the mudslide collapsed on shanties in the area and that the victim, Mrs Faisa Muhammed just married ten days ago before the mudslide incident.
He said Muhammed, about 16 years old lived with her newly wedded husband and her mother in one of the shanties in the area.

Lagos State Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Babatunde Adejare has ordered squatters living in the shanties around Amara-Olu community to vacate the area immediately.Adejare, who was at the scene of the tragedy said government could no longer condone lawlessness and would not watch while people kept on dying due to avoidable disasters.

Confirming the incident, the General Manager of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Mr. Michael Akindele said others who sustained injuries among those who lived in the shanties were immediately taken to an undisclosed hospital for treatment.He described the area where the incident occurred as a wetland which was not meant for habitation in the first place.
Michael Akindele also disclosed that residents of other nearby houses were immediately evacuated to safety.
Akindele said the scene of the incident was also close to a canal which had earlier been identified as a flashpoint.

According to him, the agency received a distress call through the emergency toll free line 112/767 at about 10.54 am on Tuesday of a report of mudslide on illegal shanties around Kuata area by Amara Olu Street, Mechanic Village Agidingbi, ikeja.“Three persons were discovered trapped under the mud. The agency’s Emergency Response Team, ERT were able to rescue two people ( a male and a female) while one adult female lost her life and the dead was recovered by the ERT.

“The agency’s ERT and men of the Nigerian Police from Alausa Division, RRS and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, LASAMBUS, NEMA, were on ground for the recovery operation,” he said.He further noted that the state government had been sensitizing people staying in flood-prone and wet land areas to vacate to avert loss of lives, especially during this raining season.

Unknown Gunmen Abduct Catholic Priest In Warri,Delta State

Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have kidnapped a catholic priest in Warri, Delta State.
The abducted priest, Reverend Father Paul Irikefe, is a lecturer with Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Major Seminary in Bodija, Ibadan, Oyo State.

Man impregnates his 14-year-old daughter in Ekiti and murders her

Residents of Emure in Emure Local Government Area of Ekiti State, are still in shock over the dastardly act of a 50-year-old man and native of the town from Ile onisa quarters, and simply identified as Williams who allegedly impregnated his 14-year old daughter (names withheld), and subsequently murdered her to cover up his crime.


Residents in the community told DAILY POST that Williams had some few months ago ended up putting his 14-year old daughter in the family way after series of alleged illicit affair with the poor girl. They added that recently, the girl began to develop a protruding stomach and no one was seen with her except her father.

Neighbors who had been suspicious of the unholy rapport between father and daughter began to peddle rumours about the source of the girl’s pregnancy. Soon, the news was making the rounds among the villagers, gossips and rumour mongers that Williams had performed the ‘uncommon feat’ of impregnating his own daughter.

Moreso, that the community isn’t a complex one as relationships among residents are closely knitted: like the saying goes ‘bad news spreads like wild fire”; in no time, everyone began to point fingers at Williams whenever he passes on the streets, they were telling one another that he had put his own daughter in the family way.

Then the worst happened. According to Anike, a lady resident in the community, Williams woke up on Sunday (September 4) morning, summoned yet another uncommon courage, took his ‘expectant girl’ to his farm in Aba Iso area of the community, ended the whole shameful drama there, quietly dispatched the girl and her unborn baby into an early grave.

“We are sure Williams killed his pregnant girl so as to cover up his crime because the girl’s pregnancy was already becoming very conspicuous and everyone knew that it was her father who slept with her,” the lady said.

” It took us a while before we were able to apprehend Williams and drag him to the Oba’s palace, Oba Emmanuel Adebayo who is himself a retired Police Commissioner.

The monarch has since handed him over to the Civil Defence Corps who have since taken up the matter,” another resident, Omodele, said.

Belgian Paralympian Marieke Vervoort Considers Ending Her Life After Rio2016

A Paralympic athlete who plans to win gold in Rio is considering ending her life after the Games due to an agonising spinal disease that leaves her unable to sleep.

Marieke Vervoot, 37, a Belgian athlete, suffers from an incurable spinal degenerative disease that has left her confined to a wheelchair.

But despite the condition she has become one of the world's leading Paralympians, winning gold in the 100m sprint and silver in 200m in the T52 class at the London Paralympics in 2012.

And now she is hoping to repeat that success when the Rio event starts on Wednesday, which she has already ruled will be her last Paralympics.

However, her health problems have been progressively deteriorating, and have now reached a point, where Vervoot says she will now consider enuthanasia.

And after the Games in Rio, she will head back to her native Belgium to weigh up her options after deciding that ending her life could be the only choice left.

She told the Daily Express: 'I have a bucket list, including stunt flying, and I have started thinking about euthanasia.'

Vervoot's health problems began in 2000 when she was struck down by the rare disease, which paralysed her.

Euthanasia was legalised in Belgium in 2002, and can take place with the written consent of three doctors.

Prophet Samuel Abiara and Late wife

The General Evangelist of the Christ Apostolic Church, Prophet Samuel Abiara, who lost his wife, Prophetess Christiana Abiara, on Saturday said he had the premonition of her death.

Abiara, who spoke in Ibadan on Monday, said his late wife was a role model to other women because, apart from serving God, she was a mother to everyone in the family.

Abiara said, “We got married in 1965 but before then, she had been close to God because her late father, Evangelist Adasofunjo, was a renowned man of God. She was the only child of her mother and she was obedient from childhood till the day God called her.

“She had been sick for the past three weeks, but she was talking and taking part in normal daily activities. But the Spirit of God told me that God was about to call her. After a prayer session at the hospital, I left her a day before she died and in the following evening, I came back and jokingly asked her if she was about to be delivered of another set of twins because we have three sets of twins. We prayed again and sang seven Halleluyah. After the last one, she breathed her last.”

The bereaved man of God added that the highpoint of his late wife’s life was her generosity and humility.

“She never kept malice just as the Bible commands. With her, I never knew any suffering or hunger because she took good care of me. She was not my wife, but my mother. Just as God is forever gentle and humble, my wife was the same. I met her through her father, who introduced me to her when I was a bachelor and I never regretted marrying her. When we met, she was a fashion designer. We hardly offended each other but anytime there was a minor disagreement, we looked up to the Word of God that preaches love.”

Despite still mourning the loss of his wife, Abiara took time to reflect on the economic problem facing Nigeria.

According to him, it is a phase that will pass. He noted that great nations in the world had, at one time or the other, experienced the same hardship.

“My wife’s death and what has happened to me is a lesson to Nigerians. No matter the suffering, we should always seek the face of God. The economic hardship we are experiencing in Nigeria now is a phase that will pass. Any country can experience it. We should be patient with President Muhammadu Buhari because he will not perform magic to bring changes.”

PDP Close Official Twitter Account,Opened New One

The Peoples Democratic Party announced the closure of its offiicial Twitter Handle @pdpnigeria and the launch of a new handle @officialpdpnig. The party also disowned its “Director of New Media”, Mr Deji Adeyanju.

The party said the position of director of new media is alien to its organisation.

In a statement issued Monday night by Chinwe I. Nnorom, Head, Publicity Division, the party said the decision became imperative as as a result of frequent unauthorized tweets from the handle.

The party frowned at unauthorized party members speaking on its behalf. However, the PDP said party members and supporters are to speak in their official or individual capacities, but it must be in tune with party’s interest on the subject matter.

“This decision has once again become necessary due to the frequent unauthorized, and most times embarrassing tweets that emanate from the Handle tweeted by the Handlers claiming to represent the PDP. You will recall that the Party had in the past, announced the shutdown of the Handle on two occasions when hackers manipulated it to embarrass the party.

“Following these developments, the Party hereby informs all its members, supporters, friends, the Media and general public to ignore and disregard any tweet from the handle @pdpnigeria forthwith.”
