JSS2 Boy Found Hanging In Benue
A Junior Secondary School two (JSS2) student of Lady Celina Academy, Aounduver Terunm, was found hanged in his parents’ chicken pen, reports say.
The lifeless body of the 13-year-old was discovered in his parents’ chicken pen located in their private residence behind Federal Pay Office, Nyima, Makurdi, Benue State.
The deceased’s mother, Veronica Terunm said she was still in shock and could not comprehend what led her son to hang himself.
Veronica Ternum narrated: “I cannot just understand what really happened I must confess. He was just a small boy, I advised him on Sunday afternoon on the need for him to be a good boy in the family and few hours later I found him hanging and dead in our chicken pen.
That afternoon he was playing football with his mates outside and at about 7pm we started looking for him after his mates had all gone home. After searching the entire neighbourhood for him, my instinct directed me to the pen where I found him hanging lifeless.
“I couldn’t understandable it. I screamed and called his father who was not within at the time. My husband came and was speechless and shocked. We immediately called the Police who came and observed the situation and after examining his remains, they expressed shock that he did no stool or urinate on his body as expected in such deaths.”
According to Veronica, the police observed further that the boy hung from a piece of rag which obviously couldn’t have carried his body weight and his legs were on the ground.
The deceased mother said that has left the family even more confused.
“We are not suspecting anybody in this matter but we are allowing the Police do their investigation,” she added.
Police authorities in the area confirmed the incident, saying the matter is under investigation.

EFCC Arraigns Former Rivers State INEC Commissioner For N185m Fraud
A former Rivers State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Gesila Khan
Okubama, was on Wednesday arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes
Commission, EFCC, at a Federal High Court, sitting in Port Harcourt,
Rivers State.
The Commissioner, together with one other official, Peter Popnen, was arraigned before Justice Salihu Saidu on a five-count charge bordering on gratification and money laundering to the tune of N185,842,000 (One Hundred and Eighty Five Million, Eight Hundred and Forty Two Thousand Naira only). Specifically, the two former officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, got into trouble for allegedly collecting the said sum in the weeks preceding the 2015 Presidential election as a bribe.
They are among the over 100 INEC officials that allegedly collected part of the $115million (N23bn), disbursed by a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, during the countdown to the 2015 presidential election.
Count one of the charge read: “That you Gesila Khan Okubama, Peter Popnen, Diezani Alison Madueke (Still at large) and others now at large on or about the 27th day March, 2015 within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did conspire among yourselves to directly take possession of the sum of N 185,842,000.00 (One Hundred and Eighty Five Million, Eight Hundred and Forty Two Thousand Naira only) cash which sum you reasonably ought to have known forms part of the proceeds of an unlawful act to wit: gratification and money laundering and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 18 (a) of the Money laundering (Prohibition) Act 2012 as amended and punishable under Section 15 (3) of the same Act”.
Count two of the charge read: “That you Gesila Khan Okubama on or about the 13thApril, 2016 at Economic and Financial Crime Commission, 6A Olumeni Street, Off Forces Avenue, Old GRA, Port Harcourt within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court knowingly failed to make full disclosure of your assets and\or interest in: two blocks of two story buildings of an office complex\shopping plaza situate at Utome-Bosh, Okutukutu\Etegwe community, Yenegoa Bayelsa State in the Asset Declaration Form you filled at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on 13 April, 2016 and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 27 (1) (3)(a) of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Establishment Act 2004 and punishable under Section 27 (3) of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Establishment Act 2004”.
The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were read to them.
In view of their pleas, prosecution counsel, O. Oyediran, asked the court for a trial date and pleaded that the defendants be remanded in prison custody. However, counsel to the 1st defendant, S. Larry, SAN, told the court that he had filed a bail application for his client. He said the alleged offences were bailable and that the defendant had earlier been placed on administrative bail by the prosecution and urged the court to grant his prayers. Oyediran, however, opposed his prayers. He said the application was served on him the previous day and he needed time to respond.
In his ruling, Justice Saidu turned down the 1st defendant’s application for bail and ordered that she should be remanded in EFCC’s custody pending the determination of her bail application. He, however, granted the 2nd defendant bail in the sum of N100, 000.000, 00k (One Hundred Million Naira only) and two sureties in like sum. The sureties must be resident within Port Harcourt. One of the sureties must have a landed property within the jurisdiction of the court, while the second must be a civil servant on the rank of a Deputy Director and above within the jurisdiction of the court.
The judge adjourned the matter to 9 June, 2017 for argument on bail applications and ordered the 2nd defendant to be remanded in prison custody pending the perfection of his bail.

Minister Jailed For Role In Corruption Scandal With Samsung
A Seoul court this morning sentenced a former South Korean health
minister to two and a half years jail for his role in a corruption
scandal that led to the impeachment and arrest of former president Park
Geun-hye.
The ruling is one of the first from several ongoing trials that emerged from the scandal, including that of Park herself and Samsung Group chief Jay Y. Lee.
Moon Hyung-pyo, a former minister of health and welfare during the Park administration and subsequent chairman of South Korea's National Pension Service (NPS), had been indicted and arrested last December.
He was accused of abusing his authority as minister to pressure the NPS to cast a key vote in favor of the $8 billion merger of two Samsung Group affiliates, Samsung C&T Corp and Cheil Industries Inc in 2015. The health ministry supervises the NPS, which held a substantial stake in both companies.
The NPS supported the merger deal in 2015.
The Seoul Central District Court said Moon had "severely harmed the independence of the NPS by pressuring it through health ministry officials", sentencing him to two and a half years in jail, according to Yonhap.
Moon had denied the charges.
Prosecutors have argued Jay Y. Lee and other former Samsung Group executives gave bribes to Choi Soon-sil, Park's long-time confidante, and in return, received political favors and government support for the 2015 merger, which prosecutors say transferred control of the key company to Lee from hospitalized patriarch Lee Kun-hee at the expense of other shareholders.
Jay Y. Lee, held in detention and undergoing trial on charges such as bribery and embezzlement, has denied all charges.
Choi and Park, also in detention and undergoing trials on charges such as abuse of power and extortion, have also denied all charges.

last month, formally apologized to the reporter on Wednesday and said he
would donate $50,000 to a journalism nonprofit as part of a settlement.
Mr. Gianforte wrote in a letter to the reporter, Ben Jacobs of The Guardian, that his actions on May 24 were “unprofessional, unacceptable and unlawful.” In the apology, Mr. Gianforte promised to donate $50,000 to the Committee to Protect Journalists, an advocacy group for press freedoms and journalists’ rights.
“As both a candidate for office and a public official, I should be held to a high standard in my interactions with the press and the public. My treatment of you did not meet that standard,” Mr. Gianforte, 56, who won Montana’s lone seat in the House on May 25, wrote. “You did not initiate any physical contact with me, and I had no right to assault you.”
Mr. Jacobs accepted the congressman-elect’s apology, he said in a statement. “I hope the constructive resolution of this incident reinforces for all the importance of respecting the freedom of the press and the First Amendment and encourages more civil and thoughtful discourse in our country,” Mr. Jacobs said.

Mercy Aigbe’s absence stalls husband’s trial yet again
The trial of Mr. Lanre Gentry, Nollywood actress Mercy Aigbe’s estranged husband, before an Ogba Magistrates’ Court was yesterday stalled due to the absence of the actress in court.
Gentry is facing charges bordering on domestic violence offences for allegedly beating and inflicting injuries on his wife contrary to provisions of Protection Against Domestic Violence and Connected Purposes Law of Lagos State 2007.
At the court hearing, Mercy Aigbe was to tender before the court the medical report of the alleged domestic violence meted on her by her estranged husband.
Gentry on the other hand, was to show cause why the restraining order made on April 28, 2017 that he should not come within a mile radius of his wife and their two children should not be made permanent by the court.
Mercy had applied for the restraining order in line with sections 5(1), 1(3) and section 7(1) of Protection Against Domestic Violence and Connected Purposes Law 2007.
Another matter before the family court, it was gathered, bordered on the custody of their two children.
While Mercy was nowhere to be found, Gentry, who had arrived the courtroom as early as 9am, was the only party present when their matter was eventually called around 11:25am.
The matter was called, only Gentry responded and went inside the chambers of the Chief Magistrate with his counsel.
He came out about 18 minutes later at about 11.43 a.m. and immediately departed the court premises with his counsel.
Mercy Aigbe surfaced minutes after her estranged husband had left. She came in accompanied by her counsel, Uche Ani and proceeded into the Chief Magistrate’s chamber.
They came out few minutes after, having obtained the date of adjournment of the matter which now is June 28.

Cult members from Ilorin throw rival into Lagos lagoon
suspected cult member identified as Ahmed Suleiman has been arrested and held in police custody for allegedly killing a man said to be a member of a rival gang.
27-year-old Suleiman connived with two others at large to throw the victim, whose name had yet to be ascertained, into a lagoon on Carter Bridge, Ebute Ero, Lagos State.
Punch reports that the suspects had trailed their target from Ilorin, Kwara State, to Lagos.
The three-man gang was said to have accosted the victim around 11.30am on Monday, tied his hands to the back and thrown him into the lagoon.
Some passengers on a yellow commercial bus, popularly called Danfo, saw the victim being hauled off towards the edge of the bridge and raised the alarm.
In a split second, the suspects executed their plan and fled the scene. A transport worker was said to have given them a chase and tracked down Suleiman.
The body had yet to be recovered from the lagoon as of 12pm on Wednesday.
A member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers in the area, Nurudeen Olalekan, told Punch that the suspect initially told them that the act was to avenge the death of his child, who was allegedly killed by the victim.
Olalekan said,
“We saw all of them walking together towards the spot. The victim was in the middle, but we never knew they were going to kill him. Immediately some passengers shouted, they threw him into the lagoon and took to their heels.
