Man Beats Son To Death For Stealing Neighbour’s Belt

45-year-old man, Sikiru Adebayo, was on Thursday arraigned in an Osogbo Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly beating his son to death.
Adebayo is facing a count of murder. The prosecutor, Sgt. Duro Adekunle, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on July 31, at Abidogun Zone 7 area of Osogbo.
Adekunle said that the defendant flogged his son, Uthman Adebayo to death after the son stole a belt belonging to a neighbour.
He said the offence contravened Section 319(1) of the Criminal Code, Cap 34 Vol. 11 Laws of Osun, 2003. Defence counsel, Mudashiru Balogun, prayed the court to grant his client bail on the most liberal terms.

Balogun said that the case file released from the office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions indicted a manslaughter charge against his client.
The plea of the defendant was not taken.
The Magistrate, Mrs Fatimoh Sodamade, ordered remand of the defendant in police custody and amendment of the charge to reflect manslaughter as indicated by the DPP.
The case was adjourned until Aug. 11 for mention.

Yeni Kuti, the first daughter late Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Anikulapo- Kuti has claimed that she still sees her father but in her dreams.

Yeni made the disclosure during a radio talk-show titled, ‘The discourse with Jimi Disu’ on Classic FM 97.3 recently.
According to the former dancer, who pioneered the idea of Felabration, a music festival conceived to celebrate the life and contributions of her father Fela Kuti to the Nigerian society, she said:
“It’s 20 years since my father died, but it doesn’t seem as if he has been gone for so long. I miss him and I still talk to him in my mind. He and other departed members of my family have also appeared to me in my dreams. I don’t know if it is right to say that they appear to me, but I see them in my dreams. I dream of them a lot.”
Yeni also disclosed that several people approached her in the past and claimed they had messages from her father. But she ignored them.
“I believe in life after death. Also, I believe that if my father has a message for me, he will come directly to me and not go through someone I don’t know or like. If anybody tells me that Fela has sent a message to me through him, I would tell him to ask my dad to appear to me directly himself,” she said.
Waying into the high cases of corruption in the country, she urged the Federal Government to consider adopting traditional African medicine (also known as ‘juju’) as a tool to combat corruption, especially in official circles.
Yeni, whose late dad had belief in the potency of ‘juju’, noted that government should use it to administer oaths to elected officials and government appointees, instead of the Holy Bible and the Koran.
“Just as Sophie Oyewole has suggested, let them use it to swear in government officials and we shall see if anybody will continue to steal our money in this country or not. I am sure that if they are made to swear by Ogun or some other fearsome African deity, there will be no more corruption,” she said.
The 56-year-old who came from a deeply Christian background, also revealed that she only attend made church occasionally. “But that is when I am invited to weddings, burial ceremonies or other events,” she added.
Explaining her choice of religion, Yeni corrected the impression that her late father didn't really influence her to believe in the traditional African religion but she on her own embraced it.
“It is not that my father made me embrace it through indoctrination; I learned and I actually believe in it. As a matter of fact, Fela’s arguments in defence of the traditional African religion were enough to convince me.”
Recalling one of her most memorable encounters with her dad, she said: “When I was a young girl and I knew nothing about his dislike for what he often described as ‘foreign religions’ (Christianity and Islam), I used to visit the Braithwaites and accompany them to church on Sundays. When Fela heard of it, he warned me never to use the allowance he gave me for offering in the church. I can’t forget it,” she said.
Fela, an Afrobeat legend, a human rights activist, and political maverick died on the 2nd of August 1997.

AN 11-year-old girl was severely burned when her friends allegedly poured scalding hot water on her during a sleepover as part of a dangerous new challenge, according to reports.

The girl, identified by New York 1 as Jamoneisha Merritt, suffered burns to her face chest, back and shoulders in New York early Monday morning, the New York Post reports.
Police have arrested the 12-year-old girl who is accused of dumping the water on her, charging her with felony assault.
The heinous alleged act was apparently part of a worrying craze known as the “hot water challenge,” in which an unsuspecting person has hot water poured over them.
In other variations, people willingly try to drink boiling water, police sources said.
Jamoneisha had been invited to the sleepover party Sunday night at an apartment in Concourse Village, police said.
As she was sleeping, her supposed friend allegedly poured the water over her – and she was woken by the searing pain.
The victim is currently receiving treatment at Harlem Hospital for her injuries.
An adult was reportedly present at the home when the incident happened.
Speaking outside the hospital where she is being treated, the victim’s uncle said she was doing well but was not aware of the damage done to her.

Eugene Dalmida, 52, said: “I think the only reason why she in good spirits is because she don’t actually see the damage done to her.
“They ain’t letting her see her face. I can’t bear to look at her… it gets me too upset.”

Jamoneisha’s cousin Starshanae Nixon said: “It don’t make sense, you don’t do that to a person. They was best friends.”
But her mum claimed she had previously been bullied by the girl who allegedly attacked her after inviting her to the sleepover Sunday night.

Ebony said: “I was told that they didn’t like her. And they just been bullying her.

“They’ve been on Snapchat. It’s been going on several times. The girl admitted it, ‘I don’t like her, I wanted to do it’.”
Jamoneisha is not the first victim of the terrifying Hot Water Challenge craze.
Last month, an eight-year-old Florida girl was killed when she drank boiling water through a straw after being dared by her cousin to do so.

Ki’ari Pope and her cousin had apparently watched several videos on YouTube of people performing the so-called “hot water challenge” before the child severely burned her throat and died, CBS News reported.

Mother Uses 12-Year Old Daughter For Prostitution In Calabar

A mother of five, Mrs. Udoaka Sunday, and three others have been arrested by the Cross River State Police Command for sexually abusing her 12-year-old daughter in Calabar.

It was gathered that the woman collects money from various men to sleep with her 12-year-old first daughter.

A neighbour, who spoke anonymously with Vanguard at their Aka Effa residence by Akai Effa Town Hall, confirmed that Udoaka collected money from different men, including a retired 78-year-old soldier, Effiom Okon, and four other persons.


                   
Her words: “That woman is really insane; she is the biological mother of the girl. How can any sane mother allow men to abuse her daughter because she is poor? There is no excuse for the act apart from insanity.


“She collected N15,000 from old soldier and other petty cash from four other men. Whenever she sends her out to hawk Zobo, Fufu and other items, she also reminds her not to fail to visit old soldier and other clients.

“She has been doing this for long and mostly with elderly men, who are above 50 and mostly those receiving pension, because that is how she ensures that money keeps coming.”


Teacher blows a whistle 

Vanguard gathered that the girl reported the matter to her teacher in school, who, after verifying the information, went to a child rights foundation that blew the whistle and had Udoaka arrested.

A Police source told Vanguard that the woman was a “bad case,” adding that she has five children for five different men.

According to the source, “we thank God for the teacher, who the girl reported her plight to before schools vacated. She was the one who reported the case to a foundation that exposed the trade.

“She is currently nursing a baby, and the father of that child has not even visited since her arrest. That should tell you the kind of person she is; she is a bad person who is insane. No normal human being will allow that old-looking retired soldier to touch her daughter.”


Police 

The Cross Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, Irene Ubgo, who confirmed the incident, said three men and a woman have been arrested and that investigation was ongoing.

Ugbo said: “A woman, Udoaka Sunday, and three men, including 78-year-old, Effiom Okon, are now in our custody and investigation is ongoing to get to the root of the matter.”

German police found a group of 12 shivering migrants hiding on a freight train near the Austrian border on Wednesday and an officer said the number caught trying to enter Germany illegally was on the rise in the region.
Seven adults and five unaccompanied minors climbed out of the train, traveling from the Italian city of Verona to Munich, after police found them in a spot check using heat detection cameras.
 Most of the migrants, who said they were from Somalia, Nigeria and Ivory Coast, were wearing only shorts and T-Shirts and had hidden under lorries transported on the train. One had an injured leg and was unable to walk unaided.
Germany, Europe’s largest economy, has become a magnet for migrants fleeing war, especially in Syria, and poverty in Africa in recent years. Some 890,000 arrived in 2015 after Chancellor Angela Merkel opened the borders to prevent a humanitarian crisis.

• “They’re freezing cold and in a poor physical state,” police spokesman Rainer Scharf said. “We have already called the emergency services because we believe some of them are suffering from hypothermia.”

Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Steve Ayorinde, ​has advised fathers ​to allow their babies ​enjoy the period of breastfeeding.

​He said this in a message to ​a Breastfeeding Awareness Campaign organised by ​the Lagos ​c​hapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ)​.
The commissioner, represented by Mrs Toro Oladapo, a former NAWOJ President and Director, Public Affairs, Lagos Ministry of Information, ​said fathers should stop competing for breasts with their babies.
He ​stated that ​rather, men should ​encourage the​ir wives to engage in exclusive breastfeeding which is vital during the first six months of life.
“Nothing is natural like breast milk,” he said, noting that human milk is better for babies than animal milk.
“Thank you so much for promoting the essence of womanhood​.​
“The media should help ensure mothers are breastfeeding to raise a healthy nation.
“You will all agree with me that children that are breastfed distinguish themselves academically,’’ he said.
The commissioner said that women, in the past, used breastfeeding for child-spacing and family planning, urging NAWOJ to spread the awareness.

Kidnapped ECWA Director RELEASED

The Christian Education Director of the Evangelical Church Winning All (International), Rev. Jen Moses, who was kidnapped by suspected herdsmen, has been released but not after his family and ECWA parted with the sum of N2.5m.

Recall that he was kidnapped last Friday between Jere and Bwari on the outskirts of the Federal Capital Territory, while on official duty and his driver was shot.

The young fulani herdsmen had initially demanded N100m, but later agreed to N2.5m after negotiation.
