A mentally-challenged beggar was yesterday arrested by officials of the Anambra State Government with about N200,000 in her possession.
Southern City News learnt that the woman, said to be in her 50s and always seen around Aroma Junction in Awka, the state capital, was arrested by government officials with the intention to take her to a mental home in the state.
A government source, who pleaded anonymity, disclosed that the officials approached the woman and led her into their van, but she protested that she would not leave behind her properties.
The source said,
“So, the officials told her they would not carry all the waste she referred to as properties, but she should take anything that was most valuable to her. That was when she ransacked the waste and dug out the money.
“We were curious because she is a woman who is mentally sick and used to beg around Aroma Junction in Awka.
“In the process, N200,000 was recovered from her.”
A passerby, who identified himself as Tony, added,
“I know this woman. She is always neat despite her condition. She buys her own food each time she is hungry.
“She did not disclose the source of the money, but it can be from the proceeds of alms she had received over time.
“Again, it has long been suspected that men always sneaked into her place at night to meet her.”

“The problem of electricity is slowly being solved"- Babatunde Fashola

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, has said electricity supply in the country is improving slowly and that power problems cannot be solved by magic.

Fashola, who spoke on Thursday at the inauguration of the 2x100MVA, 132/33kV power transformers at the Ejigbo Transmission Substation, Lagos, commended the Transmission Company of Nigeria for the ongoing projects across the country.

“We have come to hand over this expanded transmission substation, the Ejigbo Transmission Substation, to the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company. This substation was built in 1970; the capacity was 60MVA then; except for the addition of another 60MVA, this community has grown exponentially; so they have exceeded the installed capacity here,” he stated.

The minister said President Muhammadu Buhari knew the substation required an expansion, adding that the capacity had been increased from 120MVA to 300MVA.

He stated, “Between that time and when President Buhari came three years ago, some people were there. But they will come back to you; so, when they come back, ask them if they didn’t know where to buy transformers.

“The problem of electricity is slowly being solved, one by one. Anybody will tell you he will do magic; tell him, ‘How?’ He should explain to you. We inherited 800 containers for power equipment left in the port for 10 years. President Buhari gave us approval, and we have recovered 690.”

According to Fashola, there are 90 transmission projects ongoing across the country, and some of the recovered of pieces equipment are being used for them.

“If you look at it, between 2015 and now, you ask yourself honestly: Are you spending more on diesel now or before? Are you running your generators for longer today or yesterday? So, are you seeing the power slowly staying longer? If you are truthful to yourself, you will know that it is better than yesterday. And we haven’t finished,” he said.

Bride-To-Be Calls Off Wedding At Last Minute, Checkout What She Did Next

A bride-to-be called off her engagement a week before the big day and donated her 'dream' wedding venue to a couple she had never met.

Kolbie Sanders turned heartbreak into generosity by offering up her £2,500 venue to strangers after she split with her fiancé Skylar Cotton.

The 24-year-old university student wrote on Facebook that she had just 24 hours to find a couple prepared to get married at the wedding venue.

She was inundated with messages from hundreds of husbands and brides-to-be desperate to win her big day.

After whittling down the applicants to a shortlist of 45, Kolbie, from Lindale in Texas, US, plucked lucky winner Halie Hipsher, 22, out of a hat.

Insurance worker Halie's story stood out because her grandfather Edwin Truett Hipsher, 81, is suffering from pancreatic cancer and doesn't have long to live.

Halie said: "As he is nearing the closing of his chapter this donation will put us a year ahead of schedule and he will be able to attend."

The mother of seven-month-old Riley will wed Matthew Jones, 24, an oil field worker, at the Belle Vue wedding venue in Tyler, Texas, this Saturday.

And touchingly, Kolbie will be guest of honour.

Kolbie, a student at the University of Texas at Tyler, called off her own wedding to Skylar, 25, an oil well worker, when she realised the passion had left their relationship.

She said: "There was no scandal. We fell out of love and it didn't feel right to get married. We were together for four years and engaged for one and a half years but we grew apart.

"I woke up one day and realised I didn't want to marry him. We had both lost passion for one another.

"It was short notice but you can't get married if you feel it won't work out in the long run.

"The venue told me that I could still get married there at some point in the future and keep my booking but by that point I thought, 'I'd like another couple to enjoy it'.

"Skylar and I are still really good friends and he was on board with me donating the venue."

Her generosity was however also matched by a local photographer, caterer, florist, hair stylist and makeup artist who offered their services to the winning couple.

Eight Months After Reinstatement, NHIS Boss Suspended Again

Barely eight months after the reinstatement of the Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Prof. Usman Yusuf, by President Muhammadu Buhari, the governing council of the scheme has again suspended him indefinitely.

The Chairperson of the council, Ifenne Enyanatu, who announced the suspension at a press conference in Abuja yesterday, said the decision was reached after a two-day meeting of the council members.

She said the council resolved to suspend Yusuf because it has been inundated with petitions of fraud and infractions, adding that the council has set up an administrative panel to examine allegations leveled against him.

The chairperson said: “The panel has three months to complete its assignment and report back to us.

“The suspension is to allow the panel have adequate space to do a thorough investigation.

“We consulted and got the approval of the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, before this suspension.”

Enyanatu also announced that Mallam Sadiq Abubakar will act as Executive Secretary in Yusuf’s stead in the time being.
