According to a source close to the family who spoke with Vanguard, it was the screams of the victims that attracted their mother, who was cooking in the kitchen when the incident occurred.

The source said: “The woman quickly contacted her husband and Utom was immediately handed over to policemen at Afikpo North Divisional Police to prevent angry youths, who had gathered, from lynching him.”

Reacting to the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, George Okafor, warned parents and guardians to be mindful of their children’s movements and who they associated with.

Corps member slumps, dies after party with colleagues

Director-General, National Youth Service Corps, Brig-Gen. Sule Kazaure
A member of the National Youth Service Corps, Mr. Ogundare Opeyemi, has slumped and died in the Nembe area of Bayelsa State.
Opeyemi, it was learnt, died in the area where he was posted for his primary assignment.

It was also learnt that the deceased corps member slumped a day after he had a party with his colleagues in the area.
“A day after the party, he complained of a health-related issue and before we knew what was happening he slumped and died,” a source, who craved anonymity, said.
It was gathered that Opeyemi’s death caused panic among corps members, who raised the alarm over incessant deaths of their colleagues in the state.
His remains were later deposited at the mortuary of the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa.
On Friday, corps members cried uncontrollably when the kinsmen of the deceased came to convey Opeyemi’s remains to Ekiti, his home state for burial. Hundreds of corps members went in large number to the mortuary.
Officials of the NYSC in the state were led by the NYSC state Coordinator, Mr. Anthony Ekeocha.
Ekeocha reportedly described the death as painful and decried incessant deaths of corps members in Bayelsa.
He said, “We are here to carry out an assignment and it is a painful assignment.
“We all pray that we should not die prematurely but at an old age. I put myself in the shoes of the parents after much investment but at the end this is what they got”.

See How Abuja Taxi Driver returned N50k passenger forgot in his car

Unable to get an Uber from Jabi on Friday morning, Dr Ike Anya decided to flag down the Abuja taxi man who had flashed his taxi’s headlamps at him. But he had no idea that he was about to be introduced to a very rare specimen of a Nigerian – Mr Luke Olaniyi.

Ike needed to get to the bank and then run a couple of errands. Passenger and Abuja Taxi man agreed on a per-hour bill, and off they went.
He eventually asked the taxi to drop him off at home between 7.30pm and 8pm.
According to Ike, he only realised he had lost money by the next morning. After a late night, and enervating sleep, he checked his pockets and figured “Hang on, looks like I’m missing one bundle of N50,000!”
Still thinking about when and how he misplaced the money, a strange number rang his phone.
“Hello Sir, I’m the driver who carried you yesterday,”
An irritated Ike wondered why the taxi man would presume he could call him, just because he carried him yesterday. But his irritation was cut short when the man continued:
“Did you lose anything, sir?”
Only then did it click in Ike Anya’s mind: This call was about the missing money. Unable to contain his disbelief Ike Anya went on to share this good news on Facebook and twitter.

                     Honest Abuja Taxi man
But the soft-spoken Luke Olaniyi had only attempted this semi interrogation to be sure that his gut-feeling wasn’t wrong. You see, this Abuja taxi man had carried other passengers after dropping off our passenger the evening before.
He had also picked other passengers that Saturday morning before he made to clean up his taxi and found the diamond bank bundle under the car seat of the Nissan Sunny Almera – a car which he had only just collected on a ‘hire-purchase’ arrangement.
He, however, asserts that a boarding pass, which was somehow stuck with the bundle, is what convinced him that the money was dropped by Ike.
“As I see that plane paper with the bundle, I know that Oga look like who come from London”

Impressed by a Honest Abuja Taxi Man
Nigerian Dr & Writer Ike Anya had his money returned a taxi driver
According to this 42-year-old married father of three (a 2-month old baby, and two others in primary school), he was recently robbed by thieves who trailed him after he sold his own car with the intention of buying a new one for his taxi business.
Luke admits to the bite that the economy has on his lean pockets but in his words, “I am a child of God, I have the discerning spirit to know that I shouldn’t take money which is not my own.”
On whether he didn’t feel tempted at all upon finding this money in his car, Luke attests “I want to make heaven.”
Luke Olaniyi worships with the Redeemed Christian Church of God, and serves as Assistant Pastor at the Overflowing Grace Parish, Obasanjo road, Dutse, Abuja.
We certainly wish more Nigerians can be like Luke; even in this recession, and with school fees staring many Nigerian parents in the face like insurmountable hurdles.
Dr Ike recommends the taxi man for people looking for an honest person in Abuja, we recommend him as an example of a good Nigerian. He does deserve the recognition.

I Can’t Predict When Recession Will End - Finance Minister

The Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, has said that she cannot predict when the nation will get out of the current economic recession.

She, however pointed out that some of the efforts of the government to reflate the economy had started yielding results.

The minister, who spoke in an interview in Abujasaid, “I don’t want to predict when we will get out of recession. Let me tell you that we will get into growth and that’s how you get out of recession, because of the stimulus that we are providing. And it may take longer than we would like, but we will definitely get out of it. We are already seeing some positive signs in agriculture and solid minerals;and with what we are trying to do with other sectors, I am very sure we will get out of it soon.”

Exclusive-EFCC Links Patience Jonathan With 9 Houses... 2 Hotels & A Plaza

Investigators at the EFCC probing Patience Jonathan’s link with five choice buildings, including a N5billion hotel in Abuja, have unearthed 7 additional properties believed to be owned by her.

The detectives were in Port Harcourt (Rivers State) and Yenagoa (Bayelsa State) all week trying to establish whether four properties in the two cities truly belong to Mrs. Jonathan.

Shocking findings from the trip led the investigators to believe that 7 more properties including the former Customs Service officers mess in Port Harcourt and a plot of land under construction were acquired by her.

The full details below...
According to The Nation, others in the Rivers State capital are: two duplexes at 2/3 Bauchi Street; landed property with blocks at Ambowei Street; three Luxury apartments of 4-bedroom each at Ambowei Street; and Grand View Hotel on Airport road.

Those in Yenagoa are: two marble duplexes at Otioko GRA by Isaac Boro Expressway; Glass House on Sani Abacha Expressway which serves as office of the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board; Akemfa Etie Plaza by AP filling Station, Melford Okilo Road; and Aridolf Resort, Wellness and Spa along Sani Abacha Expressway.

The anti-graft agency, which says it has so far recovered N1b and secured 24 convictions in the South South, may invoke Section 7 of the EFCC Establishment Act 2004 on the affected properties after due verification, sources said yesterday.

Already, the EFCC has written to the Head of the Civil Service in Bayelsa State demanding the pay status and allowances of Mrs. Jonathan during her tenure as a Permanent Secretary. It also sought explanation on whether or not she was paid in dollars, besides travelling estacodes, while in office. The investigators are already back in Abuja to continue their assignment.

A highly placed source said: “The ex-First Lady is allegedly linked with the acquisition of the former Customs Service Officers mess in Port-Harcourt.

“We also identified three luxury apartments of four-bedroom each believed to be owned by Mrs. Jonathan. The apartments are tastefully furnished with the state of the art accessories.

“After verification of these assets and completion of our investigation, we may seek the order of the court to place the affected assets under Interim Forfeiture.

“Permission will be sought to ask the ex-First Lady to explain some of the sources of her wealth in line with Section 7 of the EFCC Establishment Act.

“As a First Lady, there was no appropriation for her office and she was not on salary.”

Police arrest SARS Officer who killed undergraduate in Lagos

The police in Lagos have arrested the Special Anti Robbery Squad officer who fired the shot that killed an undergraduate of a polytechnic in Edo State, Joseph Eidonojie-Ugbeni.

The suspect was nabbed on Friday shortly by the police authorities.

According to the report, some SARS officers, who were chasing a suspected Internet fraudster at the Ogoja Market along LASU-Igando Road, had started shooting sporadically.

The bullet was said to have hit 20-year-old Joseph in the head, while his cousin, Friday Ojah, fled to avoid been killed.

Friday Ojah had told The Punch that the policemen took Joseph’s corpse and dumped it in the boot of the fraudster’s car, before driving away to the command headquarters in Ikeja, Lagos.

It was gathered on Sunday that the officer that fired the shot had been arrested and taken to the scene of the incident.

A source said, “He was arrested on Friday and taken in handcuffs to the place where the incident happened.”

A legal practitioner and friend of the victim’s family, Saheed Sanni, said the family had decided to petition the Inspector-General of Police on the case to demand justice for the victim.

It was said that the suspected fraudster, Badoo, who they were chasing on the day of the incident, had reported at the command headquarters. A source said the suspect had been detained.

“Badoo lives in that community and is popular; the SARS officers also know him. He was not their target that day. They had actually conducted a raid and arrested some people. They were leaving when they sighted him in his car. They called his name and he quickly abandoned his car and fled.

“He had just returned from the bank that day. Badoo had travelled to South Africa and had recently returned to the community,” he said.

The victim’s father, Patrick Eidonojie-Ugbeni, demanded justice for the son.
He said, “The Badoo they were chasing showed up on Friday at the SARS office with his lawyer and parents. I met the Officer-in-Charge of SARS as well. They shot my son in the head and they claimed that he had a gun and that they shot him in self-defence. How is that possible when he was shot in the head from behind? All I want now is that the police should release the post-mortem result and the police report on the incident.”

Lagos Police PRO, SP Dolapo Badmos, said the case had been transferred to the homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for discreet investigation.

“The state Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, has directed that the case be investigated by the homicide section. We will come out with the full report at the conclusion of investigation.”

Diezani In More Trouble As EFCC Probes Another N4bn Hotel

EFCC Detectives have uncovered yet another multi-billion Naira transaction believed to have been carried out by former Petroleum Resources Minister, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke.

EFCC is now probing a N4billion hotel deal between Diezani and a former military administrator

whose identity is yet to be released “so as to protect the investigation”. The hotel may go under the Interim Forfeiture process as soon as the preliminary investigation is concluded.

The Nation learnt that detectives of the anti-graft agency have secured relevant papers on the hotel, said to be valued at N4billion.

Also, it was gathered at the weekend that some business associates of Mrs Alison-Madueke were yet to refund to the EFCC about $1.85billion traced to them.

They would rather follow through the case than make a refund, a source said.

According to the anti-graft agency, the hotel was one of the five being investigated in Port Harcourt.

An EFCC source: “We have been able to link the N4billion hotel in Port Harcourt to the ex-minister. We are probing alleged sales deal between her and a former military administrator.

“We have been able to ascertain the value of the hotel. But we are gradually tracking how the deal was carried out including verification of bank details and transactions by all those involved.

“Some of these deals we are unearthing were carried out in layers in order to shield them away from anti-corruption agencies. But we are cracking them all.”

Saraki & Ekweremadu's Forgery Case Reopened By Police

The Nigeria Police Force has reopened investigation into the alleged forgery of the Senate Standing Rules 2015 by writing to the Clerk of the National Assembly (CNA), Mr. Mohammed Sani Omolori for additional information to assist its investigation.

Senate President Bukola Saraki, his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu and the immediate past Clerk, Salisu Maikasuwa, are already standing trial and the hearing of the case will continue on Wednesday.

But Saraki and Ekweremadu’s camps have kicked against attempt by the police to reopen the probe after the police had declared the initial investigation conclusive.

The police renewal of the investigation of the forgery was contained in a letter of 25th of August and signed by the Chairman of the Special Investigation Panel (SIP), AIG Ali Amodu (Rtd).

There were indications that the reopening of the case by the police was at the prompting of the National Prosecution Coordination Committee (NPCC) in an August 19, 2016 letter to the Inspector-General, Mr. Idris Ibrahim.

The letter reads in part: “I refer to letter no. DPPA/ADV/25875, dated 19th August 2015 in respect of the above subject matter(copy attached for each of reference) and request that you avail this office with the following information:

  •      Whether or not , the 7th Senate at any time amends the Senate Standing Orders 2011.
  •      If yes, what is the extent of amendment?
  •      The name of the officer that  authorised the amendment of Senate Standing Orders 2015.
  •      The name of the officer that ordered for the printing  of the Senate Standing Orders 2015.
  •      The officer that distributed the printed copies of the Senate Standing Orders 2015 to Senators-elect.
  •      What date was the induction mentioned by Senator Abdullahi Gumel?
  •      What  did they do with the Senate Standing Order of 2011 at the induction”
  •      Who conducted the induction?
“Obtain the complete Hansard of the 9th and 24th June, 2015 to see what transpired on the floor of the Senate. The statement of Dr. Ogozy Nma should be brought to the attention of Senator Ita Enang and Senator Abu Ibrahim to corroborate or deny it.

“What is the date Senator Ike Ekweremadu presided over the house and obtains the hansard for the date. Considering the importance of this case, you are requested to expedite action on the request. Accept the assurances of my highest regards.”

It was gathered that National Prosecution Coordination Committee in an August 19 letter directed the Inspector-General of Police, Idris Ibrahim, to fill up the grey areas in its previous investigation.

The letter was signed by the Special Assistant to the President(Research and Special Projects/ Secretary NPCC, Sylvester Omoregie Imhanobe.

The letter said: “Sir, I have the instructions of the Honourable Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice (HAGF) /Chairman, National Prosecution Coordination Committee to write this letter for your kind prompt action.

“The NPCC and the new legal team engaged to take over the prosecution of the above case have reviewed the case file and found that the police investigation of the case is inconclusive.

“Therefore, it is necessary that you further investigate the case with particular reference to the following:

  •      Did the 7th Senate at any time amend the Senate  Standing  Orders 2011?
  •      If yes, what is the extent  of amendment?
“Further investigation should show:
  •      Who authorized the amendment of Senate Standing Orders 2011.
  •      Who ordered the printing  of the Senate Standing Orders 2015.
  •      Who distributed the printed copies of the Senate Standing Orders 2015 to Senators-elect.

“Obtain the complete Hansard of the 9th and 24th June 2015 to see what transpired on the floor of the Senate.

“What date was the induction mentioned by Senator Abdullahi Gumel? What did they do with the Senate Standing Orders 2011 at the induction? Who conducted the induction?

“The statement of Dr. Ogozy Nma should be brought to the attention of Senator Ita Enang and Senator Abu Ibrahim to corroborate or deny it. Find out the date Senator Ike Ekweremadu presided over the house and obtain the hansard for the date.

“Please, it is important that I receive your response to the above inquiries on or before the 7th of September for further necessary action. Please accept the assurances of my warm regards and best wishes.”
