My wife had sex with her ex-husband on our matrimonial bed" - Barber tells court

A barber, Gbenga Akinade, on Friday at an Ibadan Grade C Customary Court, secured the dissolution of his six-year-old marriage on grounds of infidelity.

Gbenga had told the court that his wife, Busayo, had sex with her former husband on his (Gbenga’s) matrimonial bed, adding that he could no longer tolerate her adulterous way.

He testified that he met the defendant when she was hawking herbal liquor (Agbo-Jedi), and that both of them agreed to marry after few months of courtship.

He said,
“I did not know that she was a divorcee with two kids until she got pregnant for me. I began to suspect her adulterous ways after she gave birth to our second child.
She used to go out for two or three days, leaving the children with neighbours.
Her immoral affairs with her ex-husband came into open recently when I caught her having sex with the man on our matrimonial bed.
I beat the hell out of her that day but allowed the man to go because unpleasant things might happen if I beat him.
I decided for divorce in order to forget how I met her with her ex-husband on my bed.”
The petitioner prayed the court to allow him to have the custody of his children.
“I promise to take good care of them,’’ he said.
The respondent, in her defence, said that her estranged husband was aware that she had two children before he married her.

She, however, was silent on the allegation that she had sex with her ex-husband on Gbenga’s matrimonial bed.

Busayo added that Gbenga regularly beat her.

She pleaded with the court to peacefully resolve the conflict.
“I am not ready to leave my matrimonial home and my children,’’ she said.
The President of the court, Chief Mukaila Balogun, dissolved the marriage on grounds of lack of love.
“The opinion of the court is that there is no more love between the parties based on the testimonies of the couple,’’ he said.
Balogun ordered that two of the three children should be in the custody of their father while the last child should be with the mother.

The president of the court ordered the petitioner to be paying N4, 000 monthly to the respondent for the upkeep of the only child with her.

A 31-year-old security guard, Malaika Simon, who allegedly bathed his colleague with hot water during a fight over sachet water, was on Friday brought before a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court.
Simon is facing a charge of assault occasioning grievous harm. The accused, however, denied the charge.

But the Prosecutor, Insp. Philip Osijiale insisted that the accused committed the offence on Feb. 28 at about 2.00 a.m. at No. 5, Obafemi Osoba St., Lekki, Lagos. He alleged that the accused poured hot water on his colleague, Mr Ayomide Adegbenro during a fight over a bag of sachet water at their duty post.

“Simon and Adegbenro are both security guards and were on duty when the complainant noticed the bag of sachet water he bought some days ago had missed.

“He asked the accused who admitted that he was the one that used the bag of water without replacing it and a fight ensued.

“About 10 minutes later, the accused poured a kettle of hot water he had been boiling on Adegbenro.

“The complainant is in General Hospital, Marina, Lagos, where he is receiving treatment,” he told the court.

The offence contravened Section 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The section prescribes three years imprisonment for offenders.

In his ruling, the Magistrate, Mr Omolaja Kazeem, granted the accused N30,000 bail with one surety in like sum, who must be a family member of the accused.

The case has been adjourned to March 23 for mention.

Audu Maikori Will Be Prosecuted;Governor El-rufai

Chocolate City co-founder, Audu Maikori, was recently arrested by police over a series of tweets he sent to his followers, alleging that some students of the Kaduna State College of Education had been killed by Fulani herdsmen in Southern Kaduna.

He is currently out on bail but Kaduna state Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, speaking at the on-going Social Media Week 2017 on Thursday, said he will face the full brunt of the law for publishing “fake stories and pictures.”

“We are going to prosecute him. He was arrested. His statement has been taken. He is on bail. He is going to be prosecuted. His fate will be decided by a judge,” El-Rufai said.

While insisting that he had no personal grouse against Audu, the governor noted that prosecuting him would serve as a deterrent to people who spread untrue information on social media and would help rein in the scourge of fake news.

He said, “It is not personal. I have nothing against him. In fact, he has worked with the state government in the past. But I’m not going to sit as the governor of Kaduna state and allow anyone to post or tweet anything that leads to loss of lives without consequences.”

Audu, El-Rufai said, was informed about the untrue nature of his posts but still doubled down on them.
“He posted fake pictures of Boko Haram attacks, Rwandan genocide, as Southern Kaduna killings. It is totally irresponsible to do that.

“Even when it was pointed out to him that the information was untrue, he still posted that he stood by his story. He questioned the authenticity of the press statement. He was totally and completely irresponsible.”

EFCC charges Shell, Agip, Ex-AGF Adoke for Fraud over Malabu Scam

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has charged oil giants, Shell Nigeria Exploration Production Company Limited, Nigerian Agip Exploration Limited, ENI SPA and three Italians with fraud in the handling of the OPL 245.

The commission accused the firms of corruptly handing over $801,000,000 to a former Attorney General of the Federation, Mohammed Adoke (SAN), and a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mr. Dan Etete.

The EFCC also accused oil magnate and Chairman of A. A. Oil, Mr. Aliyu Abubakar; and Etete’s company, Malabu Oil and Gas, of receiving part of the money.

The allegations were contained in a charge sheet filed by an EFCC prosecutor, Mr. Johnson Ojogbane, before Federal Capital Territory High Court, marked CR/124/17.

One of the charges reads, “That you, Shell Nigeria Exploration Production Company Limited, Nigerian Agip Exploration Limited, ENI SPA, Ralph Wetzels (whilst being Director of SNEPCO), Casula Roberto (whilst being a director in Agip), Burrafato Sebastino (while being a director with Agip) sometime in 2011, within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, corruptly gave the aggregate sum of $801,000,000 to Dan Etete, Mohammed Bello, Aliyu Abubakar and Malabu Oil and Gas Limited on account of the grant of Oil Prospecting Licence in respect of OPL 245 and thereby committed an offence.”

The offences, according to the commission, are contrary to Section 9 of the Corrupt Practices and other related Offences Commission Act, 2000, and punishable under Section 9(b) of the same Act.

The anti-graft agency also listed five witnesses against the accused persons.

The Malabu Oil scandal, which is described as one of the most fraudulent oil deals in the world, involves the $1.1bn paid by oil giants, Shell and Eni, to Federal Government accounts in 2011 for OPL 245, which is said to hold reserves of about 9.23 billion barrels of oil.

The OPL 245 was said to have been bought by Etete under questionable circumstances in 1998 when he was the oil minister.

Etete was said to have bought it for a fraction of its actual value. However, it was revoked by the President Olusegun Obasanjo administration.

During the administration of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan in 2011, the then AGF, Adoke, brokered a deal for the sale of the OPL 245, acting as a middleman between Shell and Eni on the one hand, and Etete’s company, Malabu, on the other hand.

Shell and Eni were said to have paid about $1.3bn for the OPL 245, which was paid into two escrow accounts owned by the Federal Government.

However, Adoke was said to have transferred over $800m to Etete, who, in turn, transferred over $500m to Aliyu, Jonathan’s alleged front.

Although Jonathan, Adoke and Etete have all denied the allegations, insisting that it was an honest transaction, prosecutors in the UK insist that $523m of Shell and Eni’s payment went to alleged “fronts for former President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria” as part of a deal that was effectively a “smash and grab” on Nigeria.

The UK authorities have since frozen $85m in Etete’s bank account while $170m was frozen in his Switzerland account.

Justice Edis of the Southwark Crown Court in London had last year, described the Malabu scandal as questionable, accusing Jonathan of not doing enough to protect the interest of Nigeria.

For now, the OPL 245 has been temporarily forfeited to the Federal Government.

The indication emerged when Daniel visited Obasanjo in his hilltop home in Abeokuta on Thursday night, and was reportedly warmly welcomed by the former President.

Daniel had been at loggerhead with Obasanjo over ten years, over political differences, alleged to have been caused by political sycophants and rumour mongers.

The former Governor was said to have been rude to the former president, a development which made Obasanjo to severe relationship with him.

Vanguard learned that the duo also had dinner together alongside other guests at the home of Obasanjo, and later engaged in ribcracking jokes, to put the differences behind them. Obasanjo who was in high spirit throughout Daniel’s stay of three hours, also assigned him role on his 80th birthday, stressing that he holds no grudges with him.

He said that if he was still annoying with Daniel, he would not have allowed him in his house. “If I still hold any grudges against you, I won’t have allowed you to come into my house. But all those are past things, and I am convinced that you have learnt your lesson’, Obasanjo told Daniel.

Lagos Court Remands Driver For Cutting Wife's Body

A Lagos Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Ebute-Meta has ordered the remand of 36yrs old Shakiru Bello in custody for allegedly killing his wife, Sherifat, in the Somolu area of the state.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. O.I. Adelaja, ordered that the Ibadan, Oyo State indigene, be remanded pending the release of legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.

It was reported that Shakiru and Sherifat, who were married for more than nine years, separated sometime in July 2016, due to alleged interference by the wife's family.

He was reported to have reconciled with her and both of them were constantly communicating.

Penultimate Monday, the suspect allegedly invited Sherifat to a location to collect money for the upkeep of their three children.

She, however, did not return home alive.

The police arrested the suspect in Ibadan, where he reportedly fled to after the incident.

He led detectives from the Ijora Badia Police Division to two uncompleted buildings in the Yaba and Somolu areas of Lagos, where the remains of late Sherifat were recovered in different sacks.

The matter was transferred to the Area B Police Command, from where it was referred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba.

Hundreds of residents and family members of the victims besieged the court premises for the proceeding.

Operatives of the Homicide Section, SCIID, led by the Investigating Police Officer, Inspector Chris Akpanomo, told the court that although no weapon was recovered from the suspect, he made confessional statements to the police.

He added that there was also fingerprint evidence against Shakiru.

The police arraigned him on two counts of murder.

The defendant’s plea was not taken, just as he did not have any legal representation.

The Police Prosecutor, Inspector Chinalu Uwadione, prayed the court to remand Shakiru, citing Section 264 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011.

“We want the defendant remanded pending the conclusion of investigation into the case and the release of legal advice from the DPP,” he added.

The chief magistrate upheld the application and ruled that the case be adjourned till March 17.

Egypt Court Finds Mubarak Innocent In Killing Of Protesters

Egypt's top appeals court found former president Hosni Mubarak innocent on Thursday of involvement in the killing of protesters during the 2011 uprising that ended his 30-year rule, the final ruling in a landmark case.

The trial of Mubarak, who was toppled in one of the tumultuous uprisings which shook the Arab world, captivated viewers as he appeared in a courtroom cage on charges ranging from corruption to complicity in the murder of protesters.

Mubarak was originally sentenced to life in prison in 2012 for conspiring to murder 239 demonstrators during the 18-day revolt - an uprising that sowed chaos and created a security vacuum but also inspired hope for democracy and social justice.

But an appeals court ordered a retrial that culminated in 2014 in the case against the ageing former president and his senior officials being dropped. An appeal by the public prosecution led to Thursday's final retrial by the Court of Cassation.

After a hearing that took most of the day, Judge Ahmed Abdel Qawi announced to cheers of approval from Mubarak supporters who filled the court room: "The court has found the defendant innocent."

The court also rejected demands by lawyers of the victims to reopen civil suits. That left no remaining option for appeal or retrial, according to a judicial source.

The families of those killed, who had attended the trial early on, were not present on Thursday.

Taha Hussein Mahmoud, whose 19-year-old son was killed during the protests in Alexandria, told Reuters by phone that the decision came as no surprise.

"In the January revolution those who won, won, and those who lost, lost. Unfortunately the blood of our family was lost in vain...they're in a better place than we are now," said Mahmoud.

Lawyers of the families condemned the verdict as politically motivated. "This ruling is not fair and not just. The judiciary is politicized," said lawyer Osman al-Hefnawy.

The courtroom was filled with Mubarak supporters who cheered "long live justice" as the verdict was read out and unfurled posters of their former leader.

Toddler dies after suffering violent sexual abuse in the hands of her father

A young Brisbane girl died after prolonged physical and sexual abuse by her dad.Kyhesha-Lee Joughin was only three years old when she suffered a painful death caused by an infected internal injury in March 2013.

Matthew Lee Williamson has pleaded guilty in the Brisbane Supreme Court to her manslaughter but denied ever harming the child.

Williamson blames the fatal abuse on his former housemate Christopher Kent, who has also pleaded guilty to Kyhesha’s manslaughter.

Kyhesha’s mother Danielle Joughin left court in tears after hearing allegations that a man kept a photo of himself with his penis draped over her daughter’s shoulder.

Williamson’s case was adjourned until March 16 after his defence barrister Michael Copley requested a report into whether a “psychological abnormality” contributed to his conduct towards Kyhesha.

Williamson testified he didn’t take his daughter to a doctor despite her vomiting green for days, having obvious bruising on her face, and leaving blood in her nappies.

The court heard he also ignored that she was leaking blood from her genitals and had told him she "didn't want any fingers up her bum anymore".

The court heard Kyhesha’s infection from an internal injury was so painful she would not have been able to eat, drink or move in the 12 hours before her death.

At the time of her death, Kyhesha was living with Williamson and Christopher Kent, who the court heard engaged in “unorthodox sexual conduct” together.

Kent, who previously spent 19 months in jail before pleading guilty to manslaughter and receiving a two-year suspended sentence, told the court on Wednesday he witnessed Williamson regularly abusing the girl.

He said Williamson, who generally slept through the day, would lock his daughter in her bedroom for hours on end and would become enraged when she then ended up throwing her faeces inside the room.

Williamson admitted using rope to keep Kyhesha locked away but claimed it was to stop her from getting out at night.

He also denied a raft of abuse allegations, including punching Kyhesha in the stomach, posing naked with her and pulling on her ear until it bled.

Both men blame each other for the violent and sexual assaults on the child. Williamson wept in the dock as photos of Kyhesha were shown to detail the extensive bruising she had when she died.

Acting President Osinbajo Condemns Celebration Of Looters

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo has urged Nigerians to stop celebrating treasury looters. To him, it is unfortunate that someone accused of corruption is celebrated in his hometown because people believe he has taken his share of the national cake.

“Today someone who is corrupt is celebrated. There is a problem that we must resolve, and if we don’t resolve it, it will hurt us very, very badly, just as it is hurting us already,” he said.

Osinbajo said the best way to win the war against corruption is to study the models used elsewhere and adopt them.

“We can only resist corruption when we ensure that systems put in place are working,” he said.

The Acting President spoke while opening a two-day National Dialogue on Corruption, organised by the Office of the Vice President in collaboration with the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC).

Osinbajo said corruption fighting back was not peculiar to Nigeria, adding that the country “cannot survive with the type of corruption we have”.

According to him, corruption thrives where it is allowed to thrive. “When the very best people see that there is no consequence of bad actions, they suddenly turn bad,” he said.

Tanzania Shuts Down Four Alcohol Factories In Ongoing Crackdown

Tanzanian authorities on Thursday closed four liquor making factories on the first day of the crackdown against the outlawed sachet-packed liquors

The crackdown was conducted by officials from the Vice President's Office, National Environment Management Council (NEMC), Tanzania Food and Drugs Authority (TFDA), Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS), Tanzania Revenue Authority and the police.

Heche Suguta, the NEMC Senior Legal Officer, said in a statement that most of the closed factories were operating illegally and most were based in Tanzania's commercial capital, Dar es Salaam.

Suguta explained that soon after the government announced the ban, most of the manufacturers opted to produce and hide the liquor.

According to the NEMC official, some of the factories were also found producing goods which were not in their licenses.

For instance, the official said that some of the factories were licensed to produce liquor but they were found producing drinking water without permits from the responsible authorities such as TBS and TFDA.

Suguta insisted that legal measures will be taken against importers and manufacturers of the products who do not comply with the government order.

Tanzania's major crackdown on producers, importers, distributors and consumers of alcoholic beverages packed in plastic sachets started on March 2 this year and is meant to enforce the ban on the sachet-packed liquor.

Buhari has stayed in London longer than expected – APC

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has acknowledged that President Muhammadu Buhari has been away from the country longer than expected. The party’s spokesman, Bolaji Abdullahi, said this at the end of their National Working Committee (NWC) meeting in Abuja on Thursday, which had some Governors in attendance.
He, however, commended Buhari, for transferring power to Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, before his departure.

“The national working committee (NWC) of our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) led by the national chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun on Thursday met with governors elected on the platform of the APC,” Abdullahi said.
The national chairman reviewed the state of the party, x-raying the challenges facing the APC in relations to funding and financing.
It was agreed that the party is not effectively funded as it should be. A new funding mechanism was therefore devised based on a planned continuous membership registration exercise across the country. The meeting agreed that this is the only sustainable way to fund the party.
The meeting also discussed the situations in some of the state chapters of the party, and it was agreed that an effective conflict resolution mechanism will be put in place to stem the tide of internal dissension and resolve existing issues.
As we near the midterm, the meeting also resolved to launch a project to showcase the accomplishments of APC governors in all the 24 states controlled by the party.
The upcoming non-elective convention was also discussed and it was agreed that the convention will take place on April 29.
The meeting acknowledged that the president, His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari has been away longer than was originally envisaged. The meeting however, commended the president for following the rule of law by allowing the Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo to assume proper leadership and by so doing saved the country the kind of trauma that was experienced in the past”, he stated.

Buhari has been on medical vacation in the UK since January 19.

Mrs. Felicia, a Nasarawa based bussinesswoman, married to  Mr. Akin Akinshola, has begged the Magistrate of Upper Area Court in Mararaba, Mr. Ibrahim Shekarau, to dissolve her marriage to her husband, who she described as an irresponsible man, over his inability to pay her bride price after 6 years of marriage
“Akin has not paid my dowry in accordance with Yoruba tradition and every effort put across to enable him to pay has proved abortive.
“He is a very irresponsible person. He does not pay his children’s school fees and he
does not provide proper feeding for us in the house.
“When I fell sick, he did not show any concern. All these have made me lose confidence in him,” She said.

The 34-year-old lady, whose marriage is already blessed with 3 kids, also asked to be granted custody of their children.

Buhari Inherited A Bad Economy, Made It Worse – Soludo

A former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has said President Muhammadu Buhari had worsened the “very bad” economic situation he inherited when he assumed power in 2015.
“Buhari met a very bad situation when he assumed power, but he has made the situation worse. Nigeria today is a fragile state with a failing economy. Some say failing state; some say failed state.
“The economy is not just in recession; we are suffering from massive economic compression. Saying it is recession trivialises the issue."

Soludo spoke at the ‘Big Ideas Podium’, a public policy debate organised by the Afri Heritage Institution in Enugu, where he canvassed what he termed a “citizens united” campaign by Nigerians to demand change and accountability from government at all levels.

Speaking on the theme, ‘Prognosis of the Nigerian Economy 2017’, Soludo said Nigeria was fast approaching the status of a failed state.

The former apex bank chief noted that it would take nothing short of a miracle for the Federal Government to return the naira to its exchange rate to the dollar as of the time Buhari took over on May 29, 2015.

He said, “It will be a miracle if after eight years, by the time it leaves office in 2023, the current administration is able to return the economy in dollar terms to the exchange rate it met when it took over.

“The truth is this government inherited a very bad situation, but it has made it very much worse.”

He criticised what he described as the “official policy of waiting for the oil price to rise.”

Soludo said the government cannot be relied upon to provide the change that Nigerians desire.

The solution to the quest for change, according to him, is a citizens’ united campaign that will put government on its toes.

He called on Nigerians to agitate for the implementation of campaign promises by government at all levels, noting that the country would make progress if political parties kept at least 25 per cent of the promises they made before coming to power.

Soludo said, “Only citizens united can rescue Nigeria, not just the government alone. It is a big luxury for anybody to say I am minding my business, because what others do will come to mind your own business for you sooner than later.

“We can’t get the leadership that we desire but we can get the leadership that we demand and work for. If only each party or government implements 25 per cent of their promises, Nigeria will be a great country.”

He added, “If you see the governments run by APC, PDP and APGA, they are all the same, because Nigerians don’t hold them accountable. We must resolve as citizens not to let government off again; peaceful agitation must be encouraged and tolerated in this country. Everybody must be allowed to have a voice.

“For example, the APC promised us that they were going to restructure Nigeria; before the elections, they said the current structure was not working, they said that Nigeria was becoming a failed state; but now, they are in power and they are not getting it done.

“Unless we citizens rise up and tell the government ‘deliver on what you promised’, they will not get it done.”

See apprentice who was paid 60k to kidnap her boss' children in one week

Tobiloba Adebiyi, heartbroken mother of 3-year-old Oluwasemilore, who was kidnapped by her mum's apprentice, Mary John, a mother of one from Cross River State, who specializes in stealing children and selling to families without kids, has narrated how the suspect was arrested.

According to Tobilola, Mary John whose real name is  Gladys Austin, barely spent one week as an apprentice at Alagbado in Lagos State, before she kidnapped her daughter, who was sold to 4 different buyers before being rescued by operatives of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad.

“After she was arrested in Badagry, she said she had been paid N60,000 for the job before coming to my house and she had planned to kidnap two of my children. But she couldn’t because I had
said if she didn’t come with a guarantor by Monday, she should not come to work.

After she kidnapped Oluwasemilore, she left for Anambra by a bus the same day, and she sold her to an elderly woman, telling the woman that my daughter belonged to a prostitute who wanted to get rid of the girl.

The woman buys new babies and resells to families without children. The policemen asked her to call the woman that she had another child to sell. When she did, the woman asked her if it was a ‘trouser’ or ‘skirt’, which was a code name for a boy or girl. We decided to give her my son as bait.”

The Punch reports that she went further to disclose that those who bought her daughter, were inflicted with strange illness;

“Those people said when the child got to them, they became sick and their business started failing. Within one month, my child had been sold to 4 different families. The 4th woman was wealthy and despite falling sick, she decided to keep her and enroll her in a new school. 4 suspects have arrested in connection with the kidnapping,”
