Checkout The Nigerian Author Who Hawks Zobo On The Streets

Other than writing and marketing books, a Nigerian author is into another thing that could be considered intriguing.

Collins Oscar, author of five books, loves hawking a Nigerian beverage popularly called zobo.

Where he lives in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Oscar, 30, is often seen knocking on people’s door, delivering zobo drinks in plastic bottles in well-arranged cellophane packs.

He also distributes the product to stores and supermarkets and hawks it around traffic light in the city.

Mr. Oscar, obviously proud of what he is doing, would take photos of himself handing over the drinks to his customers or soliciting for buyers at the traffic light and then post them on Facebook. And that would stir debates on his brand of entrepreneurship. And then more people would contact him with more delivery request.

“Business is booming,” Mr. Oscar told Premium Times, saying he wasn’t bothered about what people think of his action.

“Being an author isn’t supposed to be a profession; it shouldn’t be because you’ve written a book, you now limit your life,” he said.

“I also did that to challenge people who think that youth in the state are lazy. I did it hoping that it could inspire some guys here to wake up and solve their problems instead of depending on the government,” he added.

The young author still markets and sells his books as much as he does the zobo drinks.

He said the zobo business was a partnership with “a senior friend”. He markets and sells the product, while his friend does the production.

“I told myself that I will make my first N10 million before I become 31,” he said. “I am close to that target.”

Mr. Oscar said he writes books from his life experience such as hawking zobo.

His latest book, 19 Business Lessons I Learnt From A Thief, was inspired when thieves broke into his house and stole his power generating set. He is also the author of the bestselling book, Idiots With B.Sc., which tries to explain why university education in Nigeria “wasn’t bringing out the potentials from the students”.

The author enjoys a lot of support from the youth in the state.

“He is quite different from many youths who are only interested in politics,” says UbongAbasi Okon, a young computer science graduate who is into full-time farming in Uyo.

Mr. Okon said he buys Mr. Oscar’s zobo drink anytime he sees it in a shop.

“I have never met him, but I follow him on the social media. It’s someone the youth should look up to. But a lot of youth may not really look up to him, considering the erosion of values in our society,” said Mr. Okon.

He added, “With time, people will come to respect him; you know, people attached a lot of respect to success. I know a lot of people, for now, might be looking down on him.”

Imaobong Akpan, a public affairs analyst in Uyo, said she has been a close friend to the author and sees him as an “unusual fellow”.

Ms. Akpan tried to justify the author’s action, even though she said she wouldn’t personally like to hawk things on the streets.

“It doesn’t blend, but that is Oscar for you. That wasn’t necessary, but he would always want to prove a point. That was a way of sending a message.

“He doesn’t do things the normal way. Even his books have very unusual titles. He is not just an author, he is an entrepreneur, don’t forget that.

“I think the youth could be inspired by what he is doing,” she said.

The author, a graduate of sociology from the University of Uyo, sees himself as a rebel with a mission to change things in Nigeria. His parents initially disagreed with his attitude towards life, but today they are proud of him, he said.

“Rebellion is obedience to God; there are so many things going wrong in Nigeria and Akwa Ibom State, and it will only take a rebel to correct them.

“Our system here has been soiled and when you try to say the truth people will tell you to keep quiet. Or they would advise you not to say it loud, so that people won’t come after you.

“I see a lot of excellence in other countries, but here we are surrounded by mediocrity. So, I feel challenged every day that I should be able to represent excellence in my own community and in the country,” said Mr. Oscar.

Lady Explains How Electrician She Brought To Her House Almost Raped Her Children's Nanny

A Nigerian lady has taken to social media to narrate how an electrician she brought into her house to fix a thing almost raped her children's nanny. She said she didn't have cash at hand and had to rush to the ATM in other to be able to pay him, but before she returned the unthinkable almost happened. Here's what she said;

My kids were in there room while I drove out to use the ATM since he said he does not do mobile banking.

I came back ,knocked, nobody answered,so I went to my son’s room window and called him and he opened the door ,let me enter the kitchen, see drama.

My nanny had used the frying pan to hit blood out of his head .
He actually increased my tv and told my kids to go into the room while the drama went on .

Barber sentenced to 42 years in prison over car theft in Lagos

Barber sentenced to 42 years imprisonment over car theft in Lagos Lailasnews

An apprentice barber, Samuel Edet, has been sentenced to 42 years in prison for robbery, by a Lagos High Court. Justice Ogunsanya convicted Edet of robbing an aluminum technician, Adewale Elelo, of his Nissan Pathfinder on February 21, 2012. She sentenced him to 21 years imprisonment for conspiracy to commit robbery and 21 years for robbery.
The sentences will, however, run concurrently. Edet, who hails from Akwa Ibom State, was arraigned on April 27, 2015, on a two-count charge of conspiracy to commit robbery and robbery.
The prosecutor, Haroun Adebayo, said the offences committed are punishable under sections 297 and 295(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
Edet had pleaded not guilty. During the trial, Elelo said:
“On June 15, 2012 at 11p.m., I was returning from church after a revival when, at St. Paul Street, along Agbado Road, leaving Toyin Bus Stop, the second street by the left, I saw a black SUV ahead of me and I began driving slowly’.
The car flashed its full headlights at me and I became afraid. He (Edet) alighted from the SUV and accosted me. He asked me to get into the boot of my vehicle, but I ran away and pressed a remote control that was in my pocket to immobilise my vehicle .
“I got to a Police checkpoint at Toyin Bus Stop and alerted the Police. The officers and passers-by came to my rescue and found the defendant in the car because the remote control had made the car immovable.”
According to Elelo, Edet’s accomplices escaped as soon as the crowd arrived. However, Edet denied the allegations, describing himself as victim. Edet said:
“I was looking for a shop or work when I saw people running and shouting ‘thief.’ I was then arrested and taken to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, where the Police wrote on paper and asked me to sign.”

Snapchat Loses $1.3bn after Kylie Jenner’s tweet

Snapchat Loses $1.3bn after Kylie Jenner’s tweet lailasnews
Kylie Jenner’s tweet of no longer using Snapchat again, led to a $1.3 billion loss in the social media platform’s parent company market value on Thursday.
Kylie Jenner’s tweet read;
“Sooo does anyone else not open Snapchat anymore? Or is it just me… ugh this is so sad,” Jenner tweeted.
She later followed up with “still love you tho snap … my first love,” but the damage may already have been done, as AFP reported that Snap Inc.’s shares fell by over 6% in Thursday trading, a loss of about $1.3 billion in market capitalization.

Citigroup’s Mark May said in a statement: ‘While the recent redesign of its flagship app could produce positive long-term benefits, the significant jump in negative app reviews since the redesign was pushed out a few weeks could result in a decline in users and user engagement, which could negatively impact financial results.’
After dropping almost 8%, shares in Snap closed 6% down on Wall Street, and are now back near the $17 price at which the shares were listed when the company floated on the stock market.
Snapchat is facing intense competition from Facebook’s Instagram – especially for celebrity users – and Kylie Jenner’s tweet comes at a time when investors are already worried.
Snap has rejected complaints about November’s re-design to its messaging app, with its boss Evan Spiegel saying earlier this month that users just needed time to get used to it.
Mr Spiegel had something to soften the blow, though, with news on Thursday that his total pay last year was a staggering $637.8m. It is thought to be the third-highest annual package ever received by a company’s chief executive.
The remuneration was, however, heavily boosted by the award of shares when the company listed on the stock market.
Mr Spiegel’s basic salary for last year was a more modest $98,078. The package trails the 2007 and 2008 compensation for Daniel Och, head of hedge fund Och-Ziff Capital Management.
He received annual packages of $918.9m in 2007 and $1.19bn in 2008

LNSC Official Murdered While watching MANUTD match

Armed men suspected to be cult members have hacked to death an official of the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC). It was learnt that the victim, Mr. Moshood Bolaji, was returning from work about 9:30p.m. on Wednesday when he decided to watch the football match between Manchester United and Sevilla at Umunede Bar, Mallam Isah Close, Aguda, Surulere.

The deceased, said to be a fan of Manchester United, was in the bar when a fight broke out between cultists and a man. The late Bolaji was said to have stood up from where he was sitting to persuade both parties, when one of the cultists slapped him for daring to intervene in what was not his business. A police source said before the deceased knew what was happening, the cult members had pounced on him and stabbed him in the neck. He was rushed to the hospital but died on the way.

The source added that after the attack, the viewing centre was immediately deserted but the matter was reported at Bode Thomas Police Station.

Meanwhile, the state Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, who paid a condolence visit to the victim’s office and family yesterday, ordered the Anti-Kidnapping and Special Anti-Robbery Squad units to fish out Bolaji’s killers. In his message to the bereaved family, Edgal said the command shared in their grief. The commissioner also assured them that the command would leave no stone unturned to unravel Bolaji’s killers
