Police To Pay Muslim Woman $85k For Forcefully Removing Her Hijab

A California city has agreed to pay USD 85,000 (72,000 euros) to settle a lawsuit filed by a Muslim woman whose hijab was forcibly removed by the police.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations, (CAIR) which announced the settlement on Thursday, had sued the city of long beach on behalf of Kirsty Powell, an African-American Muslim, "after police officers forcibly removed her hijab in view of other male officers and dozens of inmates."

Powell, who wears the head covering "as part of her religious beliefs," was "forced to spend the entire night exposed in custody and described the experience as deeply traumatizing," the rights group said.

Powell was arrested during a traffic stop in May 2015 on outstanding warrants that were since cleared. Long Beach voted today to approve the settlement, CAIR said, adding that nearby communities have already adopted policies protecting religious headwear in detention following similar lawsuits.


Now female officers are required to remove the headscarves of female inmates "when necessary for officer safety," and away from male officers and inmates, Long Beach assistant city attorney said.

During the arrest officers told Powell that she had to remove her hijab.

Powell was denied requests for a female officer to search her, and was denied requests to wear her hijab in custody.

Two students of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) have died in a midnight fire at a Lagos hotel.
Roli Odogwu, a 200-Level Mass Communication student, and Linda Elegeonye, a 300-Level Law student, died of burns, days after they were trapped in the hotel room where they were guests.

Until their death, the two students were residents of Fagunwa Hall.
CAMPUSLIFE gathered that the duo left the campus on Monday to attend an evening event off-campus. When it dawned on them that they could not return to the campus late in the night, they reportedly lodged in the hotel to pass the night.
The late Roli’s friend, who did not want to be named, said she spoke to her mother to inform her of her decision to pass the night in the hotel.
It was gathered that the victims were asleep when the inferno started from a faulty air conditioner. CAMPUSLIFE learnt that the victims were trapped for several minutes before they were rescued from the room. They sustained first-degree burns. They were rushed to Gbagada General Hospital.
Last Saturday, Roli died at 4am and was buried at Atan Cemetery in Yaba. On Sunday, news broke that Linda, who had been in coma for six days, had also died.
A friend, who pleaded for anonymity, said she was informed about the incident by a policeman who picked up the late Roli’s call on Tuesday.
She said:

“The policeman told me that the owner of the phone (Roli) and her friend were involved in a fire accident and they were unconscious. I was told they had been moved to Trauma and Burns Unit of the Gbagada General Hospital. I informed other friends and we went to the hospital. When we got there, we were not allowed to see them immediately. Three hours after, we were allowed in with their parents and other family members.
“Roli was conscious and responding to treatment, but Linda was still in a coma. The burns were severe and we hoped both could make it. We are deeply hurt by their death.”

But now his lavish lifestyle is being remorselessly parodied on the internet. Twitter users have posted pictures of themselves posing, Vacchi-style in front of plastic paddling pools and pedalos, while a Facebook page entitled 'Find Gianluca Vacchi a job' has attracted a huge following.


With his penchants for classic cars and private jet, he made '#Enjoy' his online catchphrase and the title of a self-congratulatory book he published last year.

He recounts after 20 years of hard work in the family business, he had had an epiphany and decided to give it up.

Instead, he choose to cavort pool-side with the likes of his current paramour, Ariadna Gutierrez, a former Miss Colombia.

So inevitably social media users were amused that Vacchi has had a yacht and several villas seized by banks demanding repayment of debts of 10.5 million euros.

His stake in a golf course near Bologna has also been confiscated pending an arrangement with creditors who fear other debts may have been hidden, the Quotidiano Nazionale reported.

Vacchi claimed, 'It is just a little debt,' when set against the value of the family business, IMA, a conglomerate with interests in packaging and pharmaceuticals.

The playboy's stake reportedly generates dividends of five million euros a year.

However, it seems that may not have been enough to sustain a lifestyle now being mercilessly parodied on the web.

An appeal for funds to pay off Vacchi's has not done so well: by Friday it had only attracted pledges of five euros.

A man dumped his four children at Agege Local Government “Area A-Maternity Office” with a short note in their hand, asking the Local Government Authority to carter for them because he can no longer fend for the poor children due to economic hardship, Agege TV reports.
 On the short note,the father also said his wife who is the mother of the children left him and abandoned the the children.
It took the timely intervention of the Agege local government Executive Chairman Hon. Ganiyu Kola Egunjobi (pictured below) and other council workers to rescue the innocent children. They have been taken to a nearby police station for custody and proper care.
The Chairman has asked that proper care be given to the kids pending the time the police will complete their investigation and engage the parents.

                                             

University of Port Harcourt Lecturer Murdered by His Own Gateman and 2 Others

                               

Three persons have been remanded in prison by a Chief Magistrate Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Thursday for murder of a University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), lecturer, Dr. Eeba Lebari.

 

According to The Nation, the suspects are – the deceased’s gateman, Christopher Kinanee, Lebari Robert Tambari, and Ibrahim Useni, a Republic of Benin national.

 

Useni was the deceased’s housemaid.

 

The suspects were arrested between December 2015 and early this month.

 

They were arraigned for conspiracy, kidnapping and murder.

 

The Chief Magistrate, Andrew Jaja, ordered that the charges be read out to the accused.

 

He, however, said the court lacks the powers to entertain the case, being a capital offence punishable with maximum sentence.

 

He ordered that the original case file be duplicated and handed over to the registrar of the court, who will in turn forward same to the office of the State Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for advice.

 

He adjourned the case till September 28.

Confessing to abducting and killing 60-year-old mother of a rich Abuja-based industrialist on Tuesday August 8, arrested notorious kidnapper Ogonna Alioka, popularly known as Pilot, revealed that the ordeal of the deceased who was abducted on January 18, 2017, later killed and buried by her assailants in a shallow grave located in a forest bordering Lokpanta in Umunneochi and Agwu local councils of Abia and Enugu states, for recognizing one of the kidnappers, was masterminded by a Politician.

Ogonna who is an indigene of Ishiagu community in Ivo local council of Ebonyi State, further said the woman was killed while fleeing from them in the bush.

Saudi Arabian Singer, Abdallah Al Shahani, was reportedly arrested by the Police for dabbing during a live concert performance.
Oak News reports that Abdallah who is also an actor and TV Personality, was arrested during a music concert in the City of Ta’iff.
In the ‘dab’ video which had long gone viral, Abdallah was filmed dropping his mic as he asked the audience to clap along, before pulling off the dab.
Abdallah Al Shaharani later shared his apology on Twitter after he was released by the authorities who believe that the dab dance used by most celebrities worldwide has a drug culture undertone.
