Woman murdered by youth in Benue for allegedly killing her grandchild

A woman identified as Alema Otuka, an indigene of Uwaba-Oju village in Ugboju, Onipi-Adoka area in Otukpo LG, Benue State, has been murdered over allegations of witchcraft.
Daily Post reports that the grandma got into trouble when one of her daughters lost her child about nine days ago. The child is reported to have died of amnesia.
Nats Agbo, who was a witness at the scene mentioned that the daughter, Ijema, was living with her lover for whom she had the baby. He said:
“After the death of the baby, Ijema’s live-in lover accused her mother of responsibility for the baby’s death. He directed her to take the corpse of the baby to her mother, Alema, so she should cook and eat.
Dutifully, Ijema took the corpse from Adoka-Center to Onipi-Adoka to deliver her lover’s message. Upon reaching her father’s compound, her mother was at a burial ceremony.
News reached Alema Otuka that her daughter had returned to Onipi-Adoka with the corpse of her grandchild. She rushed home only to be accused of being responsible for the death of her grandchild.
Some of the villagers pushed her into her room and locked her up with the corpse that was laid on her bed.
She was locked up in the room with the corpse until the following day when the door to her room was finally opened. Though the corpse was already decomposing, she was forced to carry it.
He went further to implicate the elders of the community in the murder of the woman. According to him:
“The elders directed young men to lead her out of the village and deal with her. Wailing and further claiming that she was innocent of the charge, she was led out of the village through Obena-Adoka and Awukpa-Adoka after which the young men started beating her. Her legs and hands were broken. She was thereafter pushed into a gutter,” He said
Agbo added that the young men intended to burn her but she was saved by a team of policemen that came from Ogobia-Ugboju. She was rushed to a hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
When contacted, the Benue State Police PRO, Moses Yamuh said he was not aware of the development as of the the time of this report.
“Honestly, I am not aware, except I will have to call the division for confirmation,” Yamuh said

Ex-NNPC Worker Sentenced To Death For Murder Of Daughter’s Boyfriend

A Cross River State High Court sitting in Calabar on Wednesday sentenced a retired worker of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Mr. Godwin Elewana, to death by hanging.

The court found Elewana guilty of the murder of a 22-year-old pupil, Douglas Ojugbo, on March 10, 2015 over suspicion that the victim was having an affair with his daughter, Mercy.

Elewana, who had been in prison custody since 2016, was arraigned on one count of murder in case no. HC/9C/2015.

The presiding judge of the court, Justice Ukpa Ebitam, said the prosecution team, led by Mr. Eneji Amajama, a Deputy Director in the Department of Public Prosecutions in the state Ministry of Justice, proved its case that the accused committed the crime.

Ebitam listed the several confessional statements, hospital reports and other exhibits presented in the course of trial as reasons the accused was convicted.

He said, “The prosecution team was able to establish ingredients of murder against the accused. On whether it was the act of the accused that caused the death of the victim, the prosecution team placed reliance mostly on the confessional statement of the accused…clearly, the statement linked the murder to the accused.

“The prosecution team also proved the second ingredient of murder which was the intentional act. To have fired the victim twice with his pump-action gun, I agree that the killing was intentional. I hereby find the accused person guilty of murder.

“Subject to Section 319 of the Criminal Code of Cross River State, any person who commits murder is sentenced to death by hanging.”

Moments before the verdict was given, the defence counsel, Mr. Clement Ukaegbu, had pleaded for leniency.

Ukaegbu’s position was supported by another lawyer, Mr. Orchardson Umoh, who pleaded with the judge to temper justice with mercy on the grounds that the convict had a good religious standing and high integrity in the society.

Shortly after the verdict, the leader of the prosecution team, Amajama, said the law had taken its course.

He said, “I thank God that we have industrious and sound judges who still uphold the rule of law. Today, the parents of the deceased would have some respite that the law of the land took its course.

“This judgement will serve as a deterrent to others that you cannot do what is wrong and go away with it and I think that our society will be better for it.

“The accused was tried under Section 319 of the Criminal Code of Cross River State. Under this section, the judge does not have the right to give him life imprisonment or any other jail term. The judge has just done what the law stipulates.”

The mother of the victim, Mrs. Maria Ojugbo, said, “I thank God for doing what should be done. It is stated in the Bible that anyone who kills by the sword, will die by the sword. Elewana had no reason whatsoever to kill my son in such a manner and conceal the act by burying him. It was Almighty God that gave approval for this judgement.”

Pope Francis condemns use of Crucifix as fashion statement

Pope condemns use of Crucifix as fashion statement lailasnews
The Roman Catholic leader, Pope Francis has condemned the use of the religious symbol `the Crucifix’ (cross) as a fashion statement. According to the Pope, it is an outright abuse of the religious object. In a speech at St Peter’s Square in the Vatican, Pope Francis said that the religious symbol should be “contemplated and understood”, and “not be abused”.
Highlighting the religious meaning of the cross, he said:
“The crucifix is not an ornamental object or a clothing accessory which is sometimes abused, but a religious sign to be contemplated and understood.
He went further to say:
“The image of Jesus crucified reveals the mystery of the death of the Son as the supreme act of love, the source of life and salvation for humanity of all times.
How do I look at the crucifix? Like a work of art, to see if it’s beautiful or not beautiful? Or do I look inside, within the wounds of Jesus up to his heart? I look at the mystery of God annihilated to death, like a slave, like a criminal.”
His comments mirror those made by the Archbishop of Canterbury in 2013, within the foreword of his first Lent book. Speaking about how the crucifix is used, Most Revd Justin Welby mentioned that the Crucifix has been an object of abuse among fashion lovers and it isn’t supposed to be so.
So far as an individual cannot hand an electric chair or a tiny golden gallows on his neck, they shouldn’t do to the crucifix.
He wrote:
“For those early Christians it was a badge of shame.
Today it is more commonly seen as a symbol of beauty to hang around your neck. ‘As a friend of mine used to say, ‘you might as well hang a tiny golden gallows or an electric chair around your neck’.”

FG Files Suit To Seize Ekweremadu’s 22 Abuja, US, Dubai Houses

The Federal Government on Wednesday applied to the Federal High Court in Abuja to temporarily seize some properties belonging to the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, because he allegedly failed to declare the assets to the Code of Conduct Bureau.

Nine of the targeted properties are said to be in Abuja, two of them in London, the United Kingdom, eight in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates and three in Florida, the United States.

The Okoi Obono-Obla Special Presidential Investigation Panel for the Recovery of Public Property said in an ex parte application filed on behalf of the Federal Government before the court that Ekweremadu failed to declare of the said properties in its assets declaration forms dated June 1, 2007 and June 1, 2015.

The presidential panel through a private lawyer, Mr. Festus Keyamo (SAN), engaged to institute the legal action, prayed the court in its application to make an order of interim forfeiture pending the conclusion of the investigation of the Deputy Senate President.

Keyamo stated in the application that Ekweremadu was being investigated by the Obono-Obla committee for alleged breach of a breach of Code of Conduct for Public Officers.

The application accompanied by an affidavit of urgency, seeking an urgent hearing of the motion, was anchored on four grounds.

Ekweremadu, according to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Uche Anichukwu, on Wednesday, insisted that he had declared all his assets with the Code of Conduct Bureau as required by law.

“The so-called panel sought and obtained his Assets Declaration Forms but could not look at them since it is clearly out on a vendetta and smear campaign. This is clearly part of the politics of 2019. The senator has, nevertheless, briefed his lawyers and will meet the panel in court,” he stated.

26 year old Nigerian man shot dead in Canada

A Nigerian man Nnamdi Ogba, 26, resident in Canada has been killed by unknown assailants in a neighbourhood in Canada.
The man who was an electrical engineer is reported to be planning his wedding which is slated to hold in some months’ time. He had been living in Canada for 10 years Ogba was visiting his friends in Etobicoke the night some yet-to-be identified men men from another neighbourhood decided to strike a blow against the area, killing him in a random attack, police say.
The only thing that led to his death was simply walking out of that building at that particular time and place,” said homicide Det. Jason Shankaran. “Nnamdi was an innocent man.”
Police responded to the scene at Scarlett Rd. and Scarlettwood Ct., near the Humber River, after receiving a call regarding reports of gunshots around 11 p.m. Friday. There they found Ogba, lying unresponsive on the ground, bleeding from multiple gunshot wounds to the back. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police say Ogba never saw his attackers, who approached from behind. All the evidence in the case so far leads homicide investigators to believe that Ogba was an innocent casualty in a retaliation against the Scarlettwood Ct. neighbourhood as a whole — a neighbourhood Ogba didn’t even live in.
Ogba’s suspected killers
On Monday, Shankaran stood sombrely at a podium in 23 Division and updated the media with surveillance clips taken of the suspects and the vehicle they arrived in. The various clips show two hooded male figures leaving their vehicle, following Ogba at a distance before converging upon him out of view of the camera and then fleeing past cameras back to their SUV.

The suspects’ SUV, seen in surveillance video.
The vehicle is believed to be a newer model Nissan Rogue.
In some clips, directly after Nnamdi has been shot, there are distant flashing lights visible. These aren’t police lights; they’re Nnamdi’s car headlights flicking on and off. His car key was in his hand when he fell, police say.

“We do not believe Nnamdi knew his attackers, nor do we believe that his attackers had any interaction with Nnamdi prior to ambushing him from behind. He was merely visiting friends who live within the complex,” Shankaran said.
“I know that the community of Scarlettwood Ct. has received its share of tragedy and also violence. I believe that the suspects are likely to have come from a different neighbourhood, considering what we see on the video. I believe that these suspects may harbour some kind of animosity towards the neighbourhood of Scarlettwood Ct., and those residents who reside in it.”
The footage is grainy, but police are confident that anyone familiar with the suspects will be able to identify them. Anyone who wishes to report an anonymous tip can also call Crime Stoppers.

“He had no criminal record, and no known gang affiliation. Nnamdi was an electrical engineer. He had a fiancée. He was about to be married,” Shankaran said.
“I ask that you look into your heart at this particular situation. This situation was not one gang member shooting another. It’s an innocent man being gunned down walking to his car, going to see his fiancée. And for that reason, I ask for your help.”
Police believe that the only motive was neighbourhood retaliation, and that who exactly died that night did not matter to the killers. If the suspects had encountered another person first, Ogba might still be alive, they said.
“I think there can only be one word to describe them and that’s cowards,” said Shankaran of the two men police are hoping to find.
“To feign braveness or toughness by walking up to someone and shooting them in the back — you’re not so brave. You’re just a coward.”

The school vacated February 17 but students writing their final year projects and those undergoing their SIWES and Teaching Practice (TP) programmes are still on campus.
Ayodeji Fridaus, who witnessed the forceful eviction at Moremi hall, he said that the officers were not ”considerate enough as they threw students loads from the topmost floor”.
“Some of us are on campus because of SIWES. Where do they want us to go?” she said.
Also, an occupant of Moremi hall, Miss Akinremi, a final year student, complained that she is yet to finish her final year project. She said her property including her mattress was flung out by rampaging officials.
Halimat Busayo, who resides at the Alumni hall also narrated a similar tale of eviction.
The hall warden of Alumni Hall, who did not give her name explained the reason for the action. She said that ”the order (for eviction) came from the school management for renovation purposes”.
“The hostels were renovated when these students came in. They should also allow us to renovate when new ones are coming in,” she said.
The Dean of Division of Students Affairs (DSA), Isiaka Aransi, who showed up later in the company of the school’s chief security officer at the scene of conflict in Moremi simply instructed the students to move out immediately.
A three-hour-ultimatum was subsequently given to students occupying halls of residence to leave
