Militants Attack FIRS Officers At Patience Jonathan's Hotel

Suspected militants on Wednesday attacked officials of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) at a hotel, Aridolf Resort Wellness & Spa, owned by Patience Jonathan in Yenagoa, Bayelsa state.

The FIRS team went to the hotel in respect of tax liabilities totaling N10,117,500, but were chased by the hoodlums suspected to be loyal to Dame Patience.

According to reports, the FIRS team arrived Aridolf, demanded to see the most senior staff of the hotel but without success.

The team, however, read the warrant of distraint to the hotel officials at the reception, as militants, believed to have lodged in the hotel, came out and threatened to kill the officials, claiming that the enforcement exercise was illegal.

“We demanded that they should phone the manager to inform him of the team’s presence and mission, but they ignored the demand,” a FIRS official said.

“The FIRS team read the warrant of distraint to them. After over 30 minutes of argument, militants believed to have lodged in the hotel came out and threatened to kill FIRS officials, claiming that the enforcement exercise was illegal.

“When one of the directors of the hotel, Mr. Victor, arrived the scene, we showed him the warrant of distraint and told him that the hotel owed three months VAT.”

The official said a man, who identified himself as Chief Anthony, arrived and threatened that some of FIRS officials would be shot. He said the warrant was not properly signed since it did not carry the seal of the agency’s chairman, Babatunde Fowler.

“He claimed that the visit was a plot to ridicule Mrs. Jonathan, and that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, sent FIRS officials to plant cash in the premises.”

“Anthony ordered the militants not to allow them leave the premises until ‘Mummy’ comes.

“He ordered them to arrest the team leader and some other officials. The armed militants forced the FIRS officials to remove the seal already placed at entrance of the hotel’s salon and gym as well as to unlock the hotel entrance.”

The Eagle Online reports that the militants forced the team leader, a newspaper reporter and an NTA camera man that accompanied the team into a room, where they were beaten up.

Their phones were also seized and images on them deleted. They also deleted items stored in the camer

Alanis Morissette's Ex-manager Jailed 6 Years For Stealing $7m From Singer

A business manager who stole more than $7 million from 'Jagged Little Pill' singer Alanis Morissette and others was sentenced Wednesday to six years in federal prison and ordered to pay $8.6million in restitution.

Jonathan Todd Schwartz, 47, wept and apologized at the hearing, saying he took full responsibility for his behavior and would have a life of shame because of it. 'I alone am responsible for the devastation,' he said, adding: 'I will spend the rest of my life asking for forgiveness.'

He could have faced more than 20 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to wire fraud and tax crimes but Judge Dolly Gee hewed to sentencing guidelines that suggested around five to six years.

In a victim statement at the hearing, Morissette had urged a stiff sentence, saying Schwartz had stolen her trust and her money for years.

'He did this in a long, systematic, drawn-out and sinister manner' that would have bankrupted the singer within three years had the thefts continued, Morissette said.

Schwartz acknowledged stealing nearly $4.8million from Morissette between May 2010 and January 2014 and more than $2 million from five unnamed clients when he worked at GSO Business Management, a firm that touted relationships with entertainers such as Katy Perry, 50 Cent and Tom Petty.

Canadian Morissette was one of the late '90s most successful singers, selling 60million albums worldwide, known for her hits 'You Oughta Know,' 'Ironic,' and 'Hand in My Pocket.'

Schwartz was a high-flying partner making $1.2million a year, according to court papers.

His crimes cost the firm at least $2million above what insurance covered, led to layoffs of about a dozen employees and is expected to cause some $20million in financial fallout because of the blow to the firm's reputation, according to founder Bernard Gudvi.

The embezzlement was discovered by a new money manager Morissette hired.

'It was at this time, I realized he also stole my dreams,' she said.

When the firm was contacted about the apparent theft, Schwartz made 'wild accusations' that his former client was in the throes of drug addiction and mentally unstable, Gudvi said.

Schwartz also falsely claimed he invested the money in an illegal marijuana growing business.

"Mercy Aigbe Was Coughing Blood After Husband Battered Her" – Lagos Commissioner

Mr. Lanre Gentry was on Tuesday quizzed by the Lagos State department of Domestic and S*xual Violence Response Team (DSVRT).
Speaking on the matter, Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation in Lagos, Mrs. Lola Akande, said it was disheartening to see the state Aigbe was when she came to her office.

“She was coughing blood from her nose and mouth and she had injury on her face which the doctor said she must have an operation. I was so angry that I need to see the face of the man that did this to her, and so we invited him and he came yesterday (Tuesday) to say his own side of the story to the official in charge of domestic violence.

"But any man that can beat a woman to a pulp like that to the extent that she is still coughing blood one week after the incident need to have his head examined,” said Mrs. Akande.

According to her, the Lagos State Government has secured a restraining order for Aigbe from any further abuse by her husband.

Adding her voice to the matter, Coordinator of DSVRT, Mrs. Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, said the order prevents Mr. Gentry from getting close to his wife until further notice.

5 men jailed 15 years for having s*x with married woman in her Matrimonial Home

Minna Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday sentenced five men to three-year imprisonment each, after they admitted committing adultery.
They were, however, given an option of N150,000 fine each. The names of the accused are;

Mohammed Faruk, Johnbosco Dedan, David Momoh, Sunday Ekuese and Vincent Emmanuel.
They were arraigned alongside Naomi Abdulmajeed on a two-count charge of enticing a married woman and committing adultery.

The Prosecutor, Inspector Emmanuel Danladi, had told the court that one Abdulmajeed Akin of Tunga, Minna, reported the matter at the Tudun Wada Police Station on April 28.

Danladi quoted the complainant as saying his wife, Naomi, had intimate relationships with the other accused persons who each had s*x with her at different venues.

He said that some of the accused persons were said to have slept with the complainant’s wife in her matrimonial home.

The offences, he said, were contrary to sections 389, 387 and 388 of the penal code.

When the charges were read to the accused persons, they all pleaded guilty and begged the court for leniency.

The prosecutor thereafter asked the court to try them summarily in line with Section 157 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

He also prayed the court to order the accused persons to pay a compensation of N500,000 each to the husband.

Counsel to the accused persons, Obi Alex, however, prayed the court to temper justice with mercy, given their admission without wasting the time of the court.

Delivering his judgment, the presiding magistrate, Mohammed Hassan, sentenced the accused persons to three-year imprisonment each (15 years in total), or a fine of N150,000 each.

The reckless wife was also ordered to pay a fine.

Wicked Housekeeper Killed Employer’s Mother

An Ikeja High Court has heard how a housekeeper, Christian Yavine, slit the throat of Mrs Mariam Abiola, 79, his employer’s mother.

Yavine, who is from Republic of Benin, was 18 when the incident happened in 2014.

Led in evidence by the prosecutor, Akin George, the Investigating Police Officer (IPO), Inspector Godgift Moses, told Justice Toyin Ipaye that on July 3, 2014, he and Adetunji Fisayo Assistant Superseding of Police (ASP), visited the crime scene.

The IPO whose evidence was translated to French by an interpreter for Yavine’s sake, said there was a lot of blood on the mattress and the pillow in the room where Mrs. Abiola was murdered.

He said: “Our investigation team proceeded to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) Ikeja to inspect the remains of the deceased.

“On close observation, we found that there was a deep cut across the throat of the deceased and she had several minor cuts on her neck which shows a sign of a struggle”.

Asked how he became the IPO of the case, he said: “I am a police Inspector attached to the Homicide Division of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba, Lagos.

“I met the defendant on July 2, 2014 at 4pm while I was on duty at the SCID, I received the original case file and the exhibits were handed over to me.

“The defendant spoke Yoruba language but I did not understand, so I asked a colleague, Sergeant Adeola Lawal, to translate the language to English for me.

“On July 7, 2014, we served the pathologist, Prof John Obafunwa, with the coroners form and an autopsy was conducted by Obafunwa’s office to find out the primary cause of death.”

The prosecutor showed Moses two long kitchen knives, a black rope and a long pestle allegedly used in committing the crime.

The IPO identified them and they were marked and admitted as exhibits by Justice Ipaye.

Yavine was said to have committed the offence on July 1, 2014 at Block 74, Flat 2, Ijaiye Low Cost Housing Estate at Pen Cinema, Agege, Lagos.

He allegedly stabbed Abiola repeatedly in the throat with a kitchen knife.

The incident happened after late Abiola’s daughter, Mrs Joke Akinsemoyin, left home for a vigil.

Trial continues tomorrow.

Exclusive-Beautiful Corper killed in Abuja was returning from a Nightclub

The life of a 25-year-old corps member, Charity Thilza, was brought to an abrupt end three days to the completion of her National Youth Service Corps programme in Abuja.

She was killed by some robbers along Wuse 2 Road while she was returning from a nightclub in Carribean, around 3am on Monday.

The ‘passing-out parade,’ which marked the completion of her one-year programme, would hold on Thursday (today). She studied Linguistics and English at the University of Maiduguri.

It was learnt that Charity and four friends, identified as Lola, Bisi, Pooja (an Indian) and a man had attended a show at the club, where a hip hop artiste, Phyno, performed on Sunday.

They were said to be returning home from the party in a car the following day when the robbers gave them a chase.

The assailants reportedly shot at the car repeatedly and some of the bullets pierced through the windscreen and hit Charity, who was sitting at the back. One of the friends, Lola, was said to have also sustained gunshot injuries.

The robbers retreated when they noticed the driver of the car was heading towards a police station.

Charity’s close friend, Thlama Bukar, said she was rushed to a hospital, but was rejected. She said she died on the way to another hospital that she was referred to.

Bukar, who spoke with Punch on phone, said she was together with Thilza until Friday, when she (Bukar) returned to Maiduguri, Borno State, where she lives.

She said, “Phyno performed at the Carribean (the club) on Sunday. They were coming back home around 3am on Monday when they noticed that a car was trailing them. They took a detour, but the car continued following them. The driver of their car started speeding and the robbers opened fire on the car. Unfortunately, some of the bullets hit Thilza from the back of the car.

“Five persons went for the party. One of them is a man, but I don’t know his name. I learnt Lola was also hit by the bullets and has been admitted to a hospital. The incident was reported to the police.

“Thilza lived in (Wuse) Zone 6, and served at the Civil Defence in Abuja. She clocked 25 years in January. Her corpse will be brought to Maiduguri on Thursday (today). Her father is late. Presently, her mother is not talking; she is very distraught. She was the first child of the family. She has four young siblings.”

A colleague, Jabal, wrote; “Please, can someone explain what happened to me? I was with her last week during the biometric for our NYSC final clearance. Please, just tell me it is not true.”

Macron Wins Over French Debate Audience

French presidential candidate Emmanuel Macron was more impressive than rival Marine Le Pen in Wednesday evening's final TV debate, a viewers' poll says.

The candidates traded insults for more than two hours, arguing over terrorism, the economy, and Europe.

The French broadcaster BFMTV found voters had a more favourable view of Mr Macron than Ms Le Pen in most categories.

He was the "most convincing" of the pair in the opinion of 63% of viewers.
Ms Le Pen lambasted her rival for his finance and government background, accusing him of being "the candidate of savage globalisation" and said his version of France "is a trading room, where it will be everyone fighting for themselves".

In turn, Mr Macron said the National Front leader had openly lied, proposed nothing, and exaggerated the concerns of the public.

"The high priestess of fear is sitting before me," he said.
Both candidates were hoping to make an impression on the estimated 18% of undecided voters in the first election the country has ever held without a candidate from the two traditional mainstream parties.

The second round run-off between the pair takes place on Sunday. Go Macron! He's 39, that's the excitement.
